Big, big news phans. This has been discussed over at the Phantom Phorum for a couple of days now. Hermes Press are to print the Complete Newspaper Strips from 1936-1994. The first official announcement (well first I have seen) can be found here. I can not wait to get my hands on these. Mind you at $39.99USD a book this is going to be very pricey but well worth it. In that case i don't think i will bother with this set seeing how i already have most if not all the stories although i will have to see it in a store before i make my final decision. |

I think this will be great, Lee Falk stories uncensored, unedited in their entirety (something which FREW promise but don't seem to be able to deliver). This collection should be a must for any Phantom fan. |

I couldn't see anywhere where it says they would be unedited or uncensored but anyway this is something frew has been doing for ages either using original strips as this new lot are doing but also where cells no longer exist finding them in Scandinavia reprints or were the cells are completely wiped from existence redrawn them (although usually quite poorly) |

Yeah, my mistake, I made a big call there. They are going to reprint them from Press Proofs which I mistook as unedited & uncensored. This is not necessarily correct but I am assuming they will be as close to what was originally printed as possible. FREW edit the majority of the newspaper strips that are printed in their books. They remove continuity boxes, panels they see as duplicates and even stretch or shrink panels to get them to fit in their comic books (back in the old days they even printed the panels out of order to make sure they fitted). Yes they claim to print complete stories and in most cases this is correct but I think you will find the majority of them have been edited in some way or another. There is a difference between Complete & Unedited. If Hermes can present the complete strips unedited I will be a very happy person. |

This is fantastic news... I have been waiting for this collection for so many years ![]() Back in December I ordered "Buck Rogers in the 25th Century: The Complete Newspaper Dailies, Vol. 1", which was also published by Hermes Press, I got it delivered last month to my hometown address, since then I have moved to another city. In the coming weekends I'll be traveling back home and very much looking forward to reading that collection. I had read few Buck Rogers comics when I was a kid, so was very happy to know they have published complete collection of Buck Rogers. But complete collection of The Phantom.. I actually just can't believe that it is finally here . Though colored versions of the dailies would be great, I think they are doing that so as to keep the cost lower and all the dailies have always been published black and white for such a long time. But yeah again, color would have been perfect.

I'm absolutely sure that it will be complete, unedited and uncesored. That is Hermes' policy for their other reprint books; it is the policy for all newspaper strip published in recent years in the US; and quite frankly - it's easier to publish strips just as they are instead of doing a lot of unnecessary editing. I think Hermes knows that the comic strip fans aren't interested in paying 40 bucks for something that is edited - but for complete and unedited, 40 bucks is a bargain! Color for the dailies? No, no, no, no - the dailies are drawn to be printed in b/w, and coloring them would be "editing" them. I'm glad they decided to publish the Sundays in color (though I could have accepted b/w Sundays more than colored dailies), and I just hope that the new coloring of the Sundays is faithful to the original colors. Year 2000 coloring on 1940's artwork clashes terribly If you're satisfied with Frew's reprints, by all means stick with them. But the truth is that Frews reprints leave a lot to be desired for those of us who want to see the strips exactly as they appeared in newspapers. And the production quality of the strip reprint books can't be compared to Frew's comics - it's two different worlds, and the price shows it. These books aren't for everyone. McCoy and Barry looks great in colour, but by colouring Moore's early stories, you'd essentially ruin the art and the beautiful, moody and mysterious feel of it... That's what I feel, anyway. McCoy's artwork is even better in colour, IMO, and Barry fits both black and white and colour perfectly. I'm really not sure if I can afford these books. |

It's about bloody time. I've already got digital copies of every Falk story but I want hard copies in chronological order in good condition. Then I will stop buying FREW apart from the new and European stories. I bet they'll cost a pretty penny too. |

I know that $40 is a good price for this, but I am not sure if I could afford it. Do anyone know how long these volyms will be for sale? If I could get a real job and a steady income, I could feel secure in ordering them. Having one volym of Sundays covering 5 years means that 55/5=11 volyms will be needed until 1994, one volym each year. It will take a long, long, time until the collection is complete. I am currently collecting reprinted facksimils of a complete other comic book. It began 2002 or 2003, I think with some 3-4 volyms a year, now I am in the 15th year of reprinting and I know that the time when a, according to me, decline began to happen to the comic book, so within perhaps two years, I will probably end. This collection has taken approximately twice the speed as the speed in which it was originally published, if it 15-20 years that is to be covered, then it is fine to wait, but reprints of a strip that has run for 70 years will take an awful lot of time, I really hope that they could get a higher publishing speed than 4 volyms a year since waiting 11 years to get everything until Barry will be a little too long wait, ca 5 years would be OK, though I think. Still, Hermes cannot do miracles, but if they got the access to the strips, the pace could be held quite high I think. |

That's exactly my situation. I think I need to finish my studies and get a job before I can afford starting collecting these books. The cost of getting them sent to Norway will probably be high too, but we'll see. |

11 years is long but it's not that long. I am currently collecting the complete peanuts collection and they are getting released as 2 books per year over 15 years, now that is a long wait. At least with 4 releases a year you are always getting something every 3 months or so and it will not feel as long between each release. The other thing is I am sure they don't want to flood the market. What if they release 12 books in the first year and they don't sell, suddenly they could be ruined. I'd be happy if they start with the 4 release in the first year and then if demand is there to ramp up their releases. Edited by Geaghs, Feb 25 2009, 07:23 AM.

You guys are right and printing Moore's strips probably isn't suited for color. But I grew up reading mostly post Moore strips through Indrajal comics, which were all done in color and they looked great. So considering that I really want McCoy and Barry's strips in color, oh well atleast I'll have them through the Sunday colored strips .4 Volumes in one year is a good start. And I wouldn't mind if they stuck to that schedule for many years. It will definitely give fans time to budget their purchases. Similar press release http://www.comiclist.com/index.php/news/hermes-press-announces-complete-phantom-newspaper-strip-reprint And if anyone is worried about the buying price, well it will be much lower. Just like the Phantom collection, the Buck Rogers Volume 1 is also retail priced at $39.99 (US), but is currently available for $26.39 (US) on Amazon. |
