Here is the place to discuss music based on Mandrake. There has been a new album released with a concerto track dedicated to the original caped crusader. This is something I'd love to listen to.

I can't help thinking the Phantom would be even better suited for this kind of music than Mandrake. It's a much more theatrical and epic series, and I would love to see something like this done for the Ghost Who Walks.

I had no clue what album you were referring to, few hours later read your article on the CC homepage. Always better to link articles with your opening post.

The music description as a journey through Mandrake's adventures and battles with the criminal underworld sounds really exciting, like a score to the comic.

Off topic, but does anybody here have the David Newman score from the Phantom movie? I absolutely love his work on the film, it makes the movie better in many ways. His Phantom Theme was fantastic.

http://www.amazon.com/Mandrake-Corner-Axel-Borup-Jorgensen/dp/B00005YJU1/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1244384154&sr=8-1
Looks like Christian Lindberg the composer and performer of the "Mandrake in the Corner" had originally released these tracks on his own album in 2001 and later released in 2002 for US. Have a look at the Amazon page to have a sample of the three tracks and rest of the album.

1. Mandrake in the Corner: I. Allegro (5:14)
2. Mandrake in the Corner: II. Lento - Maestoso - Lento (5:20)
3. Mandrake in the Corner: III. Vivace - (3:04)

For the new CD all these three tracks have been combined into a single track with the duration of 13:57.

I am planning to purchase those three tracks from Lindberg's original album via iTunes.

This new CD appears to be a compilation work of various composers, not sure if trombonist Håkan Björkman has recorded new music based on Lindberg's composition or included Lindberg's original recorded music, but from the quote below it appears to be new recorded music.

It’s vivid, exciting stuff both musically and, as one might expect of a piece written as a vehicle for Lindberg’s own technique, virtuosically. As is often the case with Lindberg’s music though, it’s not without its humour and quirkiness and the result is an entertaining, immensely enjoyable romp that Björkman clearly takes in his stride both in terms of his playing and, judging by his willingness to dress up Mandrake style in top hat, cloak and pencil moustache for the insert pictures, in the spirit of the occasion.
Looks like the CD might be something to own with those insert pictures of Björkman in his Mandrake costume :) .

I love the score by Newman, created a separate thread to discuss this.

I just purchased the 3 tracks via iTunes. Only $1.69 each. The music is pretty good too. It has that old timey 40's serial tone to it. Like when the hero is set upon in an all out brawl.

Track #2 is my fav. The slow and mysterious tone in that track has a noir feel building to it. Sometimes I keep imagining a new visitor entering Xanadu, or the secret 8 meetings :) .

Track #1 has a little tone of humour in the early bits, but the second half slowly progresses into noir area, blending well into track #2.

Track #3 is fast paced with a recurring theme from the previous tracks.

Since both Christian Lindberg and Håkan Björkman are Swedish, I will try to contact them to see if I can find out something more. Maybe a particular episode was the inspiration for the composition?

Christian Lindberg was very quick to respond, here is his reply (in my translation):

Quote:

Yes...Mandrake in the Corner is inspired by the comic character, that is correct!! He was sort of a patron saint when I composed the piece. He shows up with his magic in the middle of the second movement and then stays in the corner and keeps an eye on the ending....

And on top of that his e-mail address is mandrake@... :D

Thanks Andreas.. so cool that he responded and with that email id he indeed seems to be a big Mandrake fan :) . I think if a Mandrake movie ever gets made, it would be great to have Lindberg compose music for the movie, if not the whole score then atleast one piece of his music could be included on the soundtrack.
