As you can see on the main site, the series will end with #6. As I mentioned in an earlier post, Eura's plan was to do a test publication for six issues, and if it was succesfull continue right away with a #7. Unfortunately, the series didn't sell as much as they had hoped for. At the same time, sales were apparently not so bad that the series was ended before the 6th issue (knock on wood, #6 is still scheduled to be released), and there is some talk about printing Phantom stories in one of their anthology comics instead. In hindsight, maybe they should have started with that to make the readers aware of the Phantom again, and after that bring out a new series. |

That's a shame. I wonder how comics with other characters go in comparison. |

Oh yes, as always they can be bought directly from Eura's website: http://www.euraeditoriale.it/index.php?EDITORE=EURA%20EDITORIALE&COLLANA=PHANTOM%20L%27UOMO%20MASCHERATO where they cost 3 Euro each (plus postage). They can also be found on ebay (for three times that price). |

As I said elsewhere, I bought L'Uomo Mascherato 1,2,3,4 for the cover price in comic shops in Milan. As of 27th September, #5 was not on the shelves of the comic shops I was in and there were back issues of 1 & 2 in at least 2 shops. As you all know , there has been a long publishing history of The Phantom and Mandrake in Italy (and France, Spain, and a shorter one in Germany, for that matter) and it's relatively easy to find old back issues on bookstalls, in street markets and in comic shops in those countries. Going to the FACTS convention in Ghent in a couple of weeks and, apart from hunting down old Dutch comics such as Kapitein Rob, De Kat, Eric de Noorman etc., I'll be looking for traces of The Phantom. As for other titles in Italy, lots of the Marvel and D.C comics plus USA indies are on sale there and seem to be doing well, if the enormous queue in one shop was anything to go by - mind you, it was a Saturday afternoon. And there's manga everywhere, like a disease. Not sure if the covers and b. & w. printing in L'uomo Mascherato really helped it. Lots of readers seem to prefer colour. |

On Italian comic forums I found that there was a lot of negativity towards the decision by Eura to print the Phantom in b/w. That really surprised me, because the best selling comics in Italy are in b/w! The comic titles from Bonelli, aswell as other titles from Eura, have always been in b/w and it doesn't seem to hurt sales one bit. But, as explained to me in these forums, Italians see the Phantom as a typical American comic that should be in color. That the stories reprinted by Eura were mostly published in b/w originally didn't seem to matter, they expected color for the Phantom anyway. OT: here is a complete list of all Dutch Phantom comics. The Phantom only appeared as the title character of 9 Dutch comic books (3 series with 2 issues each, and 1 one-shot). The Phantom was also a back-up comic in the anthology Pep in the late 1960s. This news is disappointing. I haven't got around to reading my copies yet but the quick glances that I have had is that these are full of extra tid-bits of information and that publishers put a lot of work into them. On the upside, at least this means I will have some extra cash to spend on other overseas phantom comics.

Andreas, thanks for the info on Dutch Phantoms. Much appreciated. Another excuse, if any was needed for a good rake through dealers tables. Great fun. As for Other Italian titles, I should have said, as you point out, that the Sergio Bonelli titles are numerous and sell barrowloads - particularly Dylan Dog and Tex. They are in b.& w. with the very odd exception and I think you're right on the expectation of colour thing. My personal favourite Bonelli comic is Martin Mystere which has featured some excellent artists, in particular, Giancarlo Alessandrini. Look him up, you'll like what you see. Also, Diabolik is still out there and had a sort of relaunch some years ago and each month there is a new title, a reprint and a 2nd reprint, plus a "grande" twice a year and all sorts of other repackaged stuff. There always has been a big comics tradition in Italy, France and Spain and it's so satisfying tracking down old, obscure titles that I've only read about in ref. books, or have never heard of at all. Geaghs, the Italian Phantoms do have little titbits of interest in the text pages, so we lose that as well. Sad. |
