The Phantom has a rich history when it comes to being adapted into other forms of media, though sadly not as diverse and consistent as one might wish. The character has never had the constant popularity of many of the figures he inspired outside of comics, and his appearances on film and TV have been sporadical. With the upcoming movie The Phantom: Legacy (which looks like it could be the best non-comics presentation of the Man Who Cannot Die this far) and the SyFy television series The Phantom (which looks, to be honest, appalingly bad) the time is right to look back at what we have seen of the Phantom’s adventures on the screen so far.

What a wonderful article. Whoever-wrote-it must be immensely talented.

EDIT: Thinking about it, I probably wrote exactly the same thing the last time one of my articles were featured, leaving this joke redunant and slightly embarassing. Oh well. ;)

Response, positive or negative, would be very much appreciated, if anybody actually reads the thing (it's very long...).

Haha... indeed :) .

Man.. that was so much fun reading about Phantom's media appearances through the years, looks like Turkey had a quite a Phantom following there, since the producers made three films of the comic character.

I have seen most of the DOTE's episodes during the 80s and fondly remember enjoying it very much. Didn't know it was meant to the 27th Phantom. I always assumed Mandrake and Lothar were not descendants, but were first incarnations of the character and they very well could be. And since Phantom's daughter was Jedda Walker, guess he was indeed a later version of Phantom after the 21st anyway.

Yeah not sure if the series will still hold up for me now, though I feel I might still enjoy it.

I'd have to disagree with you on the Tom Tyler serial though, Paul. I thought it was absolutely terrible.

Thanks pal, glad you enjoyed it! :D

I'm sure DOTE is great if you connect it to your childhood. I recently found my five year old cousin watching episodes of "He-Man", and I got such a wonderful sense of nostalgia I watched an entire episode with him.

I guess the creators of DOTE didn't care that much about continuity, so I suspect Flash, Mandrake and Lothar ARE the first incarnations... Mandrake and Flash look as young in 2009 as they were in 1934, so why not in whatever-year-DOTE-takes-place-in? ;)

And I do love the serial JD, re-watched it before Christmas and it was absolutely wonderful seeing it again. Considering the low budget I'm amazed they managed to craft such an entertaining "film", though I know many fans probably agree more with you than me on this subject.
