Trivia fact: The writer Anna Jansson is a well-known writer of crime novels in Sweden. This is her first ever comic story.

Interesting fact, Andreas. Hopefully it'll be better than what we've been getting currently, then.

Strictly speaking, there have been several female Phantom writers since Ingebjørg Berg Holm, in Moonstone's prose collection. If this one is half as good as "Giovanna", we would be in for a treat. I will never get why the story was hated by so many. It tried something original, received a lot of media attention, and completely overshadow a lot of the average stories we have been getting lately.

Never read anything by Johnson before, but then again, I don't tend to read crime fiction. My mother reads her stuff, though, so maybe this is the time to introduce her to the Phantom?

EDIT: In an interview done a couple of years ago, Ingebjørg expressed some great views on how Egmont should further evolve the Phantom series. Sadly, they have not followed any of them. She really needs to write another story.

There have been other female writers. Diane Alfredhsson who wrote under the psevdonym Dai Darell. I don't think the phans were so unhappy about her.
On the other hand I've never understood why the Giovanna story was so hated. I kind of liked it.

This story by the way "Saved by Fate", I did not like. Another unknown sivilization in the mountains of Bengal were people lives until they are hundreds of years of age...

A lot of Australian fans, if you think it is necessary to differentiate people by the least common denominator...

She never wrote a bad story as far as I'm concerned, at least I cannot remember any. She's one of the people I wish would join Team Fantomet again.

The "lost civilization" didn't bother me much, for once. Maybe it was Lindahl's superb art, or the two plot lines that converged at the end, or Lindahl's art... ;) But I really, really liked it. And the "people live until they are hundreds of years" is kept ambigous enough IMO. Oh, and lets not forget the wonderful artwork... :D

I liked it too, to my surprise. I'll come back with more comments later when I have more time. I hope she writes more stories, for sure.

I believe it was only done in Norwegian, but I'll have a look later. Maybe I could translate the section I mentioned.

Agreed. Jansson must have an extensive knowlegde of the Phantom's history, and I would love to see her write another one.

It was wonderful to see a slightly more human Phantom again, and in particular a much more human and "real" Kit Jr. (the future 20th Phantom, that is).

I'm amazed by how much was packed into this story. It's only standard length, 33 pages or so, but it feels like it could be around 50 pages long because there's so much detail and so much going on.

Only silly thing is that the Norwegian edition did not have Anna Jansson's name on the cover, which is a massive missed opportunity, unlike the Swedish edition.

Overally, one of the best stories of the year.

An interview with Anna Jansson gives a little insight in how se came to write a Phantom story, and how the work was done:
http://www.fantomen.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=139

For those who can't read Swedish, it basically says that the Egmont editors sent out a request to lots of famous Swedish novelists some years ago with an offer to write Phantom stories. A lot of them responded positively, some submitted ideas and synopsis, but finally it was only Anna's idea that became a story. As she was not used to the format of writing comic scripts, she was assisted by the artist Hans Lindahl who broke down her story into comic panels.

The Phantom was a childhood favourite of hers, and since she has worked as a nurse it was a natural combination for her to let the Phantom play a part in the discovery of penicillin.
