I'm wondering, would any of you buy ChronicleChamber merchandise such as t-shirts? I've had the idea festering for a while now and thought I'd bring it up. If it was to go ahead the money from the shirts would go back into the site so I wouldn't be spending it on comics and so on .Let me know your thoughts. |

I vote yes, just give reasonable shipping costs to those of us on the other side of the planet please! |

Depends on design and price. But I also had this idea a while back. |

I don't know if I would buy a shirt (I am still thinking we should/could do a shirt up for the CC meet up) as I am not sure if I would wear it but I would purchase a stubby holder or something like that. |

Any designs would be CC-centric. We couldn't have the Phantom on there because it'd be copy right infringement but we CAN make nods toward the character. I already have ideas for a few designs. Maybe I'll post some sketches up so you can get an idea of what I'm thinking. |

I say use the logo and we could probably get away with using the Phantom eyes. |

Well, yeah, one will have the site logo but I'm also planning on doing a few "tag" shirts with basic graphics. Those kinds of shirts I'm a big fan of. The tags will be things phans would pick up on, but people on the street might get a kick out of. Anyway, like I said I'll post some sketches of what I'm thinking. I hadn't thought of the mask eyes, that's a good idea. I think to start with we'll have the logo and maybe two or three tag shirts and see how they go. Edited by JD, Aug 24 2009, 10:08 PM.

This idea is still floating around in my head. I'm wondering what price you guys would be willing to pay for a shirt? $25 - $30AU? Is that too expensive? Let me know your thoughts. |

Try to keep it under $25 AU, I think that will be around $23 US. I would prefer shirt prices to remain under $20 US, cause there would be additional shipping cost. Also I hope to see some creative design which will be more spread out, rather than only a logo and a title. Copyright issues are tricky, whether you can use Phantom's comic face/mask/eyes is something to look into. Perhaps skulls, cave, books and candlelight indicating the chronicle chamber. Of course the site name needs to be prominent, but the other aspects of the design should be such that it stands on its own.. not a just a t-shirt promoting a website. It should convey the character of Phantom and his world. I like how Kirby Krackle's cover art is spread out on their t-shirt, something like that but more colorful would be good. |

This is the main issue with the whole thing, finding somewhere that can have these things printed for a decent price. RedBubble can do it for $25AU minimum and their shipping is very reasonable. However I'm also looking for other avenues.
Then you'll be happy to hear that I plan these shirts to NOT be big ad type shirts. Yes, there will be one shirt that will just have the logo and the site title but the rest will be what I like to call "art" shirts where the art/ image on the shirt is much more important than the brand. For example, the Mambo shirts from the 90s. Yes, those shirts will also have the logo and site address, but it'll be of lesser import from a design/ viewing perspective than the image. For example one design I plan to do will have a nice image of a wolf face. It'll have text under that reading "My Other Dog Is A Wolf" and under that (but in a smaller font) will be the site address and logo. So the idea is that people who have never been to the site and have never read a Phantom comic can look at the shirts and think "hey, that's a cool design" but them people who are familiar with the Phantom will get the references. "My Other Dog Is A Wolf" being an obvious reference to people in the comics always thinking Devil is a dog only to freak out when they find out he's a wolf. Things like that. Having studied copyright as part of my art training I can tell you it is a confusing, convoluted, scary piece of legality. We might be able to get away with the mask - as in mask only, no cowl - but any more than that I think is inviting trouble. As such, for the moment, I'll only be using images/ words/ ideas that phans will be able to connect to the character but aren't DIRECTLY connected to him, if that makes sense. I should also stress that should this go ahead it probably won't appear for a while. As I said before I've got to find places they can be printed and shipped for a decent price, I'd have to figure out how to sell them (as in eBay store, or some sort of PayPal thingy or through a site like RedBubble) or even if there is interest. I mean, if I get 100 shirts printed up and two sell, then there is no point. This is another great thing about RedBubble as there is no up-front cost of creating the shirt where as other places charge you to print the design and you might only be able to order a minimum amount which, as I said before, would kill me if no one bought any. Honestly I'd like to use RedBubble as I've used them before and know for a fact that their quality is VERY hight. I have two shirts with my art that RB has printed and they are beautiful. They are also the most reasonably priced I've found thus far. So it's a juggling act of finding something that won't break the bank but is also affordable for people who may want to get one. So yeah, it might be a bit before they appear but all your suggestions and thoughts help.

I would probably buy the "My Other Dog Is A Wolf" shirt if i like the final design as i have been thinking about buying a wolf shirt for a while. I'm also keen to see the sketches for shirts to get a better idea of what they would look like. As for price I think its more important to organize the designs first and then see the level of interest / postage costs ect. Though IMO $25 sounds like a reasonable price provided its a good shirt of course. |

"My Other Dog Is A Wolf" idea is brilliant . If RedBubble is indeed giving better service in terms of quality and pricing, then I would say go for it. Once pricing and design is finalized, post those details and create a poll asking members if they are going to buy it. Depending on the results, decide on the quantity and then place the order. Another way to keep these shirts exclusive and in demand will be to actually print the shirts in limited quantity. Once sold out that design will be not repeated. Say 25 is the run for the first design.. once cut off is met, there won't be more. Yeah sure this may not happen as I imagine, but worth a try. Those who missed it, have to look out for the next design.. exclusive from CC . |

Glad you like the "Wolf" idea. As for the image, I planed to just have an image of a wolf head. I drew one a while ago for an exhibition which I was very happy with so I'll probably use that as a basis and probably have a certain forum member colour it. Sorry I've not posted any sketches yet, I've just not seemed to have the time to do any up properly, but I know how I want it to look in my head. I'll try and get some up soon.
As I mentioned I've bout shirts from Red Bubble before so I can tell you for certain that they are of a very high quality. I can't recall off the top of my head what shipping costs are but I remember them being very reasonable, at least to Australia.
That's a nice idea but the great thing about RedBubble is that there is NO minimum order. The shirts I have on there have only been bought once each - by me - and there is no problem. RB will do one-offs. Yes, it sounds incredible but it's true. They get their money by having a base price which all goods have to sell at, for shirts it's $25AU. So, if I want to make money off what I sell on RedBubble I just add a certain percentage to the base price of the goods. So the two shirts I have on there at the moment I sell for $33 which earns me $8. However, with the CC shirts, if I use RedBubble, I'll be selling them at base cost, at least to start with. If they sell well I might put it up then, but it'll be while away. As for exclusive shirts - well, I have an idea for Meet Up 2010 that I think will be quite cool.... |
