Man of knight
Catching up with Dice, another writer from the London oldskool scene.
Was quiet for a few years but good to see a few burning pieces again popping up.
Proper oldskool styles!
Who are you and who do you represent?
DICE / DICER / DISE / DISER
How long have you been writing and why did you start?
I STARTED WRITING AROUND JANUARY 1987 WHEN I CHOSE THE NAME DICE
Tell us about the differences from when you started to todays present times.....
HALLS OF FAME USED TO BE SACRED FULL OF BURNERS BY THE TOP ARTISTS OF THE TIME, NOW THEY ARE JUST PLACES FOR WEEKEND WARRIORS TO VISIT EVERY OTHER DAY AND ROLLER OVER UNTOUCHED PIECES TO PAINT THEIRS, OR KIDS BOMBING IN HALFORDS SPRAY GIVING IT LARGE. RESPECT USED TO BE EARNED, NOW ANY OLD JOE BLOGGS CAN BE PART OF A CREW OR PIECE.
How did you get your name?
WELL, I GOT BUSTED IN EARLY '87 PUTTING UP SOME INSIDES ON A BIG MET, WHEN I USED TO WRITE "SPIN 86", THEY (BTP) PUT THE WIND UP ME AT THE TIME AND SAID IF THEY EVER SAW IT UP AGAIN ID GET RAIDED AND SENT TO COURT, IT WAS A BLUFF, BUT I WAS ONLY A LITTLE KID, SO I THOUGHT ID BETTER WRITE A DIFFERENT NAME FROM THEN ON. I LIKED HAVING AN "I" IN THE MIDDLE OF SPIN, SO I CHOSE DICE.
Who or what drives you?
I LIKE THE ACTUAL ACTION OF SPRAYING PAINT! IT IS ADDICTIVE, AND IF I HAVENT EXPERIENCED IT FOR A WHILE THEN I NEED TO GET OUT AGAIN AND DO IT. THOUGH, THE REASON I DONT REALLY DO LARGE SCALE STUFF IS BECAUSE I ALSO GET BORED VERY QUICKLY OF SPRAYING, I CANT BARE MORE THAN 2 HOURS MAX!
What do you think about people like Banksy (and others) who have commercialised graff?
ALL POWER TO 'EM! YEAH, THEY AINT UP OR DOIN' REAL GRAFF, BUT IF THEY CAN MAKE MONEY FROM IT THEYRE VERY CLEVER!
If approached, would you do the same as them to earn money?
HELL YEAH, AFTER 20+ YEARS OF TAKING ABUSE FOR IT, ITS ABOUT TIME I GOT PAID FOR IT!
Do you plan to get anything out of graff? Do you have any goals or objectives you aim for?
NO, IN THE BEGINING I WANTED PEOPLE TO SEE MY NAME UP, THAT WAS A BUZZ, NOWADAYS I DONT HAVE ANY GOALS OR AIMS REGARDING GRAFFITI
Obviously from 20 years ago (89) to today there has been huge changes in every aspect. What do you think about the UK scene right now and where do you see things in 20 years time? (2029).
ITS PRETTY MUCH THE SAME AS IT ALWAYS WAS, AS LONG AS YOU KNOW CERTAIN PEOPLE YOUL ALWAYS BE OK, IF YOU DONT YOU'L GET CUSSED FOR NO REASON. OTHER THAN THAT, ITS GENERALLY A LOT EASIER TO PRODUCE PIECES NOW WITH ALL SORTS OF GRAFF STUFF AVAILABLE TO THOSE POSH KIDS WHO CAN AFFORD IT.
In your opinion, what country do you think has the best scene in todays era?
CONTINENTAL EUROPE IS ALWAYS INTERESTING, THERE ARE SOME REAL HARDCORE WRITERS IN AUSTRALIA, AND ALSO OF COURSE NEWYORK.
What is the craziest thing you have ever done/seen/experienced whilst on a mission?
A DRUNK COUPLE HAVING SEX IN FRONT OF THE FENCE TO FULHAM LAY UP WHILST WE SAT WATCHING WAITING TO GO IN.
What impact do you think the internet has had on graffiti? There's alot of good and bad points, but overall, is it for better or worse..?
WORSE. TOO MUCH NEGATIVITY, NOT JUST IN THIS COUNTRY BUT EVERYWHERE. PEOPLE WILL ALWAYS HIDE BEHIND A COMPUTER. ALSO, IT HAS CHEAPENED A LOT OF THE PHOTO'S, THEY DONT HAVE AS MUCH MEANING NOW. 20,000 THUMBNAILS ON A LAPTOP CANNOT COMPETE WITH A DUSTY FAKE LEATHER PHOTO ALBUM FROM BOOTS PACKED WITH REAL FOTOS.
Do you think there's a particular person/people/scene/style that has influenced you to what your style become?
YES, DEFINATELEY. NEW YORKS FINEST, DONDI, DERO, TKID, SEEN, SONIC.
Shouts and anything else you would like to say?
FUCK GORDON BROWN!
Many thanks for your time and support for the website.
