Inoculations.
Ask your GP, nurse or check online for updates. Also this depends on what your trip will involve and whereabouts it will take you. When we first went we toured all over Malaysian Borneo and we were recommend....

  • Japanese encephalitis - A private prescription which you have to pay for so shop around.
  • Hepatitis A and B.

.
.
Recommended Medications and Treatments.
Obviously this list is not inexhaustible, you need to take your own medications and also you can do your own research and ask your GP about what to take etc. If you have sensitive skin it may be worth testing Deet (insect repellent) before you go. Other than your own medications these can be useful...

  • 100% Deet - for collars and cuffs to keep mosquito's away.
  • 50% Deet - Best for skin to stop bites.
  • Antihistamines - Can help prevent or cure itchy bites or any other allergies.
  • Paracetamol or Aspirin. Hangovers and aches!
  • Ibuprofen - Anti-inflammatory so useful to have packed.
  • Diarrhoea tablets - Supermarket own brand are cheap and effective!
  • Plasters of various shapes and sizes - Blisters, cuts, whatever. Essential packing for any holiday!
  • Indigestion remedy - Eat to much? Curry gave you heartburn?
.
.
What to Wear

  • Cities and towns (daytime) - Think hot and close to the equator. You can burn with cloud cover in Malaysia so long sleeved, thin, light coloured is best. Full legnth light airy trousers, thin combat pants.
  • Cities and Towns (Night time) Mosquito's arnt really a problem in centres of Miri etc so anything cool, vests, T-shirts etc, shorts, boot-cut, combat pants. Still think thin and floaty where possible. Miri in particular is quite humid.
  • Jungle (Outdoor-Daytime and night time) - Long sleeves, long trousers, snug fitting collars, cuffs, trousers tucked into good long socks. Good boots (lightweight, breathable. Lightweight, thin combat pants and shirt is best, regatta or similar shirt, any cheap, well fitting, lightweight combat pants (Tesco, Primark etc).
  • Kelabit Highlands (indoor-night time) - Can get cool so a lightweight fleece or a thermal or base-layer under-shirt is good. Same in bed, can get cool so a t-shirt and underwear. We will be building our house around this to make the nights warmer. By cool I mean compared to the days, still like a nice summer day in UK. :)
  • Plenty of places to go out for meals etc in the towns and cities, so take some going-out clothes too. Light for the sake of packing and warmth but as can be as flash as you like.

General info.

  • take 1 toilet roll. And buy a pack when you are there. Make sure you have one in your bag when you go shopping, out for a meal etc as a lot of Malaysian toilets do not have toilet roll, instead they have a shower head next to the loo! Hotels etc should be fine, shopping centres and restaurants may not! :D
  • Malaysia and a lot of Asia have toilets which are sunken at floor level. This means squatting, balancing on your knuckles and many other acrobatic feats. Public toilets and shopping centres should be fine (if you go into the right cubicle!). Hotels should also be fine.
