I am so fucking pissed.

I was playing WoW earlier, just fine and dandy. I noticed an ant crawling across my laptop surface so I reached up to tilt the lid down to squash the bugger.

I forgot that if I tilted it too much, it would send the comp to sleep. It did, in the middle of my game and shut down all my convos.

No biggie, right? I go to restart my computer...........and what the fuck?

Msn messenger won't connect, yahoo is barely working, and WoW is fucked up. Not only am I "unable to connect" every time I open the launcher, it opens up my browser and redirects me to this shitty domainredirect site.

All I got for my pains on the WoW help forums was a direction to dowload HijackThis!, but not on how to use it or what the hell I was supposed to do afterwards.

I'm pissed, my comp is fucked and I'm really wondering if I somehow got a virus that magically executed when the comp went to sleep.

Any ideas on what to do?

As a last resort you could always reformat your hard drive and reinstall your OS, but I think there's a fix somewhere. What programs are affected and were they the ones you had running during your crash? Because you might just have to reinstall them to fix this problem (though WoW's an annoying-ass bugger to do installations for, since it's so huge and has so many patches you need to dl.) Have you read the readme for the program the forums recommended? Because that usually helps in understanding the how and why for the program.

edit: oh yeah, one more suggestion: don't use your laptop to crush ants. that's what your fingernails and shoes are for.

I give up. I think I'm going to have to take your advice, Sol.

I'm so goddamn pissed off right now it isn't even funny. If I had even a clue that that brat I kicked had something to do with it, I'd report his ass.

What a colossal waste of time....

Could someone do me a favor? Please, PLEASE do some reasearch on www.domainredirect.com.

I suspect that I've been jacked on WoW, because there's no way that I could have had my system crash so easily, not to metion have WoW crash that easily. I haven't reloaded WoW but I'm still having problems with my internets.

I can't find anything anywhere. I'm begging you guys. I'm so frustrated that I'm litterally about to break down here. I'm about ready to open a ticket with Blizzard and demand that they investigate Metallicah's account, because it seems awful suspicious that almost immediately after I kick him from the guild and I restart, all these problems occur.

I can't even use yahoo, and sometimes when I try to use the web, i get redirected to that gay site.

edit: Just read your post on TFF... holy shit that's one mean mother of a malware if it can survive you reformatting your hard drive. I got nothing.

You say it's only redirecting your net connection, nothing else? There's a possibility it attacked your router, if you're behind one. Whenever I have an issue with my internet, 99% of the time it's my router acting up again.

You can obviously get to the net to post here, unless you're doing it from a different computer, so all is not lost.

IF possible, try downloading Spybot Search and Destroy and run it and see if anything other than cookies comes up.

Change your WoW password to include some CAPS and numbers, but preferably not passwords that would be easily strung together from dictionaries. Yes, they will try to brute force an account by trying combinations of dictionary words. However, if someone doesn't even know your userID and it's obscure, then I doubt they'd succeed.

You may have confused the piss out of your router when you dropped the connection mid-packet. You may want to unplug it for 20 seconds then plug it back in and let it go through its restart.

WoW, for me, requires a number of port forwards thru my router or it won't work correctly. You may have to have them set up for you to work, with it being a fluke/miracle that it hasn't crashed up to this point.

Make sure your firewall didn't get hosed be the powerdown, it may be causing some of your problems.

Wow, on my computer places almost no actuall .dll's or sys files on your system directories. I was able to reformat my system (cause my games are on a separate drive from the OS) and it ran from its directory without any installs. I found this by accident when I tried to reinstall it and it told me "WoW is already installed correctly on this machine".

Okay, this gets technical, so bear with me. This is a way to track down if someone is actually hijacking your data stream. Open a command prompt window from start->accessories

Then type in "tracert www.worldofwarcraft.com"
This will dump all the ips that data needs to go through to get to worldofwarcraft. Mine looks like this (with x's to protect my local info)
rosoft Corp.

C:\Documents and Settings\Xxxxxxx\>tracert www.worldofwarcraft.com

Of the first few hops, all those that haven't resolved for you can bee looked up on ARIN:WHOIS. Just enter in the IP address listed there and it will tell you the registered owner of the IP address. Now, consider who you get you internet service from. If those first few aren't related to them, then you may have a problem.

The first request timed out is my router, that won't respond to pings. Then next 4 are related to my ISP. The rest are general mainline network owners like sprint or at&t. The last few are WoW's servers that also don't respond to pings.

"Hikaak this" is a program that will record all the running processes and related specs about your machine so that people can parse thru the output and look for malware. You can do this as well by googling the names of each process listed in the processes tab when you do a three-finger-salute to the computer (i.e. press control-alt-del to bring up process manager). If you want more in depth info about the running processes, then download Microsoft's Process Explorer, Unzip it to a dir and run it. It is helpful because many malware uses the same name as legitimate processes, but are running from a different directory than normal. You can click "save as" from the process explorer and post the text file here and I can look thru it if you want.

Let me know if you've made any headway or need more help.

Edit: if you just ran a "Repair" option from your windows cd, that that's the reason you still have your bug. Hopefully spybot will see it. You may have to reboot and re-run it a couple times to rid yourself of it, but hey... it's free. Spybot doesn't really look for rootkits, which are viruses that attach themselves as a Kernal driver to the OS. You may want to install GMER or some other rootkit finder if you have them available. Otherwise, the only sure way to get rid of it is to wipe the drive that the OS is on from the Windows install disc and start over. Now you see why it's so important to keep your OS secluded from the rest of your data.

Edit2: Domainredirect is a valid domain redirect site. What may have happened is that someone registered a fraudulent redirect in there and it has since been removed and thus you get their site when whatever malware tries to open it.

In the file C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts is where malware may have placed a redirect on you. if you double-click the file, it will ask you what program to use to open it. Select Notepad.

There shouldn't be more than this in there:
# Copyright © 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost

That one measly line called localhost is all that's needed. Any more and you might be suspicious, unless you ran the "immunize" in Spybot, then it will add about 4000 lines related to protecting you from malware and ad sites. If you haven't run immunize yet, and there's more than that in there, make a backup of the file, and delete everything other than the "127.0.0.1 localhost" line. Reboot. If the crap comes back, and you have already run virus and malware checks, congrats, you could be seriously pwned. You can also try some of the online scanners available from anti-virus manufacturers. These scanners require that you browse there using IE since they install active-x programs to do the scanning. Don't forget to run their uninstall from add/remove programs if you don't plan on using them again.

Damn it, Zeph, stop spreading your problems! My dad works from home and his computer died on him, so he shanghaied mine. Only one problem: he somehow managed to get my computer to keep itself from booting up. I've gone into the BIOS setup and it shows that the computer's reading the hard drive and that the hard drive is set up as the master and is on the boot list, but the OS won't boot. If I have to get a new computer with *shudder* Vista I will never forgive you!

PS: we figured out after he fucked up my computer that his computer was just overheated, and I'm currently on my mom's laptop.

Sorry, Sol.

It's been my experience, however, that one must NEVER let a family member near your tech. Bad, bad things happen.

Just find some way to distract him with a shiny thing. -shrug-

I'd sure love to know how my problem mysteriously disappeared though. Guess I just got lucky.

Also, a very helpful post, TW. I might even move your post and make it a sticky for WoW problems, if ever I need it again.

Well, the results are in and my computer will remain dead until I can get it fixed, which means no WoW for me for a bit. It looks like my boot sector's dead and I don't have recovery disks (my computer didn't come with them, but had a system recovery partition which, wouldn't you know it, requires the boot sector of my computer to be working, assuming that's the problem) so I'm taking it to a repair place tomorrow morning. Coincidentally, I'm also going to pick up some paints for my Warhammer models tomorrow, which I'm finally getting around to assembling, since my other time-wasting thing is now gone. My Wood Elves will pwnz0rz j00r High Elves, Holyra!

I'm BACK! Turns out that when my dad messed with my hard drive he bent one of the data transmission pins. Took 15 minutes and just as many dollars to get it fixed.

Just how easy was it to fix this thing?

I've heard horror stories of people taking their laptops in and being subjected to a five minute diagnostic and then charged $100. >.<

You got off lucky, methinks.

Well, if it was me, once I figured out the problem Solarman described, it'd take me 30 seconds and a pair of needlenose pliers to fix it. Hell, I've had to do that once before, come to think of it.

But I had no idea what was wrong. Hell, I thought the boot sector of my hard drive was corrupt. The place charges $67/hr, but only for time they actually spend working on it, including the diagnostic. They don't subscribe to the "$10 for the tap, $90 for knowing where to tap" theory of repair. It took them about 15 minutes of working on it to figure it out and fix it, so they only charged me $15.

Yeah, I know what ya mean. It took me a little bit to figure it out as well, so your point stands. Also, awesome repair place you found, that's quite a fair pricing scheme.
