Depression What is it? Depression is an illness that is suffered from by ONE IN FOUR people every year, and it is a very serious illness. It is when a person feels down, and it doesn't seem to go away. You lose interest in what you used to anjoy and you may even desocialise yourself from certain situations. It can cause a person to let negative thought take over thier life, such as feeling that they are useless and that they can't do things. The positive things seem to get pushed out. It's like a spiral, where one negative thought will feed into another, until you only think negative, and you feel like your in some kind of endless pit, that doesn't seem to contain any good. What causes it? Depression can be caused by many things, and at times, nothing at all. It can be caused by things such as a death to someone close to you, which can cause a sense of being down anyway, but if a person can't deal with it, it can lead into a state of depression. Being bullied by people, for example at school, can cause depression, as a person will spend thier time having people say bad things about them, and even forcing them to believe that they are not a good person. This is just one reason why bullying needs to be stamped out! Some people will have depression come on from nothing, and this can sometimes be caused by illnesses such as Bi-polar. This is an illness which used to be called Manic Depression, as there would be times when a person got very manic, causing them to become over ambitious, or agressive for example, and then other times when they would get severly depressed. However due to the fact that not all people go through both these stages, it has been renamed Bi-polar Disorder. Disorders like this can be inherited from our parents. How do people manage it? There are different ways in which people try to manage thier depression. There are things which include speaking to people, other where they write thier thoughts down, and some people will self harm to show how much they are hurting inside. Speaking to people can help a person as they are getting thier thought and feelings out rather than keeping them to themselves and just trying to cover them up. It can help with something like if a person dies, then if a person affected by this, speaks about how they feel, then rather then just pretending that they are OK and it hasn't effected them, it gives time to let out how they truly feel about it. Some poeple will talk to people like councellors and mental health workers for treatment like this, and others will just turn to thier family and friends. Writing down thought and feelings can help a person, as again they aren't keeping the thought and feelings to themselves, they are writing them down and getting them out. Writing things down can also help if a person finds it hard to talk, as then they don't have to talk, they can just write down how they feel. This is just a little information that I have put together myself, so it may not be great, but I will add onto it if I think of anything else to add. Hope you find it useful. Helping Hand xxx |
