It was the middle of April and I felt as if I was a navy blue dot submersed in a sea of red. I swam through the sea and finally reached out to what could have been a lifeboat, but it was Derek Jeter. As I made my way through the crowd at Fenway Park, sporting the infamous interlocking NY, I noticed that I was surrounded by scowling Red Sox fans. They were all staring, wondering why I was a Yankees fan, but I did not care. Living in a suburb close to Boston definitely does not provide a Yankees fan with a welcoming, friendly environment during baseball season. Although this is true, I have made it through every baseball season for the past seven years without so much as a scratch. Over the course of a baseball season, I bear the brunt of snide remarks because of my loyalty to the Yankees. No matter how many jokes I hear from April to October, my support of the Yankees never dies. Friends and family constantly ask me why I am a Yankees fan, considering I was brought up in the middle of Red Sox Nation. My answer to them is: “Why shouldn’t I be a Yankees fan?” I have copious support for their extraordinary club because many values of their team are reflected in my own personality. The most important virtue of the Yankees organization is to never give up, no matter what circumstances exist. The Yankees’ captain, Derek Jeter, has demonstrated this trait ever since his rookie year. Being considered the face of the Yankees puts Jeter under a lot of scrutiny and criticism, but that never stops him from putting one hundred percent into everything he does. The experiences Jeter has overcome range from petty heckles from fans at games to battles with threatening hate mail. In my own life, there have been many obstacles that I have had to overcome as well. Two summers ago, I tore my hamstring one month before soccer tryouts began. My doctor and physical therapist were not sure if I would be able to recover in time to play, which threatened my chances of being able to participate in the sport I loved so much. For the next few weeks I battled through physical therapy and conquered my injury. My ability to prevail in such a difficult situation gave me great confidence and taught me the value of never giving up. This important quality possessed by Derek Jeter and the rest of the Yankees organization is what contributes to my admiration of their outstanding club. Whenever I am taunted for being a Yankees fan, I always think back to that April day at Fenway Park. I am proud to say that I stood in front of thousands of people and could smile and reveal that I am always true to myself, even in the toughest of conditions. |

I have selected a few members in addition to the mods and admins to open "house" topics. At any time on Halloween day, you will respond to people's house topics with "trick-or-treat!" and they will PM you what they're giving out. You may only do this at up to two houses, however. Have fun, and if you're a mod/admin or I selected you and you haven't made a house yet, do so now! |
