2K boss explains where companies are ‘going wrong’ on Nintendo formats The global boss of 2K has predicted that publishers bringing non-licensed games to Wii this year could struggle – as the console’s market is “flooded by crappy titles”. Speaking to MCV, Christoph Hartmann said that his company would find it difficult to secure the success it has enjoyed with its Carnival game if it had to release it today. He said: “Where people go wrong in the casual market is that, while the development costs are exploding on the casual side, they’re treating the Wii like the old PC market – making cheap, accessible games. They think if they make ten titles and two are hits, they will finance the other eight. “But they forget these eight crappy titles will flood the market and will lead to problems in terms of production – and upset retailers. Also, the consumer will be pissed off because they’ll be confused.” Of 2K’s own success on Wii with Carnival, Hartmann said that getting the title early to market was key. He added: “Had we released it last week, it would have been much tougher. There’s far too much stuff in the Wii market [now] and it’s hard to shine. While the Wii is the strongest growing console, it’s a risk not to have well known brands in your games.” source I agree with this. but do you? |

I agree. There are way too many cheesy games on Wii out at the moment (popcorn arcade is an example of a bad company that makes games for the Wii), and there should be a less rapid release of games. :/ |

Nintendo, in recent years, has had a weaker approval process than the other two giants. (Note the removal of the words 'of Quality' from the Nintendo Seal.) Result: All the crap games go there ^^ |

I hate the amount of shit games that seem to be flying towards my Wii. Even the "good" ones don't hold my attention for long enough. If Nintendo don't pull themselves together by net generation (which they probably won't) I shan't buy it. |

I point back to the "cycle", whereas the first party games are solely being focused on the casuals, so as Ninty can expand the core base even more come next gen. The thing that can really halt this though are the third-party shit games, which are kinda like telling an 8-year-old he can still suck his thumb. They're spoiling them. With that said, there really are quality third-party games on Wii. Sega in particular has been doing extremely well; Sonic Unleashed was great, Madworld looks great, and Sonic and the Black Knight looks promising. That's not to mention titles such as Okami, No More Heroes (or is that second party?), and so on... |
