User Name: X-Tricks (XT for short) Contact Info: x_tricks2000(at)yahoo(dot)com Age Statement (I am over 16): Yes. Character Name: Jack Harkness, Cptn. Age: hmmm. Older than he looks. Description: Jack is a devilishly handsome man with a perfect grin, a gorgeous body, vivid blue eyes and brown hair. Taller than average he seems larger than life. Almost always dressed in oddly archaic clothes and rarely seen without his WW2 greatcoat, he's never without his leather wristband. Personality: A 51st century man stuck on the slow road through the 21st century, Jack Harkness is a man out of time - and with far to much of it. Highly social and naturally friendly, Jack is not introspective by nature, preferring action to thought. He's as much moved by impulse and instinct than logical reasoning but his instincts are excellent. Jack lives large; a big grin, expansive gestures, shouts of laughter, easy tears, and broad innuendo. When he’s angry he’s beside himself with rage but it blows over quickly and he doesn’t hold grudges. He loves easily and hates rarely. He can be astonishingly generous and, at other times, blindly selfish. He was a conman for many years and the habits of that lifestyle both give him valuable skills and create problems. Jack is used to using his charisma and looks to get what he wants and to manipulate others, but he's much less used to sticking around to deal with the after effects of his actions. Traveling with the Doctor gave him a taste for doing the right thing that has stuck with him since, sometimes to his frustration. There are nights when he wishes he could return to his selfish, cowardly youth but he knows what's coming and, despite himself, still wants the Doctor to respect him - should he ever see him again. While Jack is able to mimic the cultural habits of the 'modern' day, his upbringing was very little like that of a 20th century man. Open displays of intimacy and physical affection (sexual and not) were commonplace where Jack grew up, fixed sexual orientations and monogamy were considered a rather unusual 'kinks'. STDs and unplanned pregnancies were unheard of, gender equality was (nearly) universal so sex was a pleasure to be shared and enjoyed, not wrapped up in peculiar social restrictions or odd cultural myths. Living through the Victorian era and both World Wars in England taught Jack to be circumspect but it isn't a lesson he enjoys. When he's with people he likes and trusts, he reverts to his normal ways of expressing affection. Specialties: Truly immortal, Jack cannot die - ever. He's also got all the genetic advantages of a 51st century human; a sharper sense of smell and taste, an edge on speed and strength - and a bit of anatomy he hopes never gets put to use again. He's also got a semi-functional vortex manipulator, several pieces of working alien tech and all the resources of Torchwood at his disposal. Problems: A good tactician, a good leader but a bad boss - Jack isn't great at handling the day to day details of running an organization, or of handling his employees. He demands for loyalty can become unreasonable and he's made more than his fair share of social flubs. Jack can't sleep, he dozes every now and then and dreams intensely - often nightmares. He's a terrible speller - English is far from his first language. He talks with his mouth full. Some Skills: Make friends. Handle guns, computers, time machines, space ships, basic first aid. Drive almost anything, including a mule train. Speaks more languages that haven't been invented yet than anyone else on the planet. Has a passing familiarity with a hundred different bits of science and can recognize aliens by their smell. Sexually inventive - almost avant guarde. Cheats. History: For most people, history is a single line stitched through the universe, bounded by birth and death. Jack Harkness' life looks more like a bad embroidery project, wobbling back and forth, crossing it's own path, knotted and tangled. In places the very fabric of the universe is buckled along it. Jack's birth was in the 51st Century, in one of the great human diasporas, he's one of several mildly variant sub-species of human - not appreciably different from the common ancestors of Earth. His family was small, by the standards of the day, only two primary parents and less than a dozen secondary ones. He had only a single sibling. War came, as it does throughout human history and shattered his family, stealing away his brother and killing his father. Things were never the same after that and when Jack reached the age of majority, he and his best friend went off for adventure and like many youngsters seeking adventure, they joined the army. Jack survived their first encounter with the enemy. His friend did not. He became a Time Agent, turning his talents of persuasion and his curiosity and his knack for finding trouble to use. He partnered for some years - in a variety of ways - with and older Agent called Hart. The Agency appreciated his ... flexible moral sense and cultivated his tendency until, somehow, something went wrong. Jack still doesn't know what. He doesn't know why but the Time Agency stole two years of his memories and he stole a vortex manipulator, a great deal of valuables and fled down through history. He worked for himself for years, pulling cons as needed to make money to amuse himself - until the day, during World War II, he met a very strange man with big ears and a woman with the Union Jack on her chest. He forgot how to be a coward. He remembered how to love. He died. And he lived. And he lived and he lived and nothing he could do, nothing anyone could do, changed that. Jack never knew why, just like he never knew why the TARDIS disappeared in front of his eyes, leaving him behind. In pursuit of the Doctor and, answers, Jack ended up in the 1800's with a broken vortex manipulator and, knowing that the Doctor used the Cardiff Rift to refuel, he made his way to Wales. There, he came to the unkind attentions of Torchwood. For years, he 'worked' for them - more property and project than employee or partner. Called a Field Agent, he did their bidding, finding it convenient to his need to stay close to the Rift. It wasn't until after WW1 that the tone began to change and Jack was treated more equitably. By the 1950's, Jack was essentially a senior member but remained content to accept orders - he had no plans to make a home here on Earth, he was just biding his time until the Doctor returned. He chose to believe it was consistent accident that he always just missed connecting with him. In 1999, the world changed and Jack Harkness was no longer a Field Agent - he was all there was of Torchwood-Three. Something about Alex's murder and suicide hit him hard. Or perhaps Jack remembered his history and knew what the future held. Instead of abandoning Torchwood-Three, or allowing Torchwood-One send new agents and directors, Jack took control of the Hub, changing the access and security systems, insisting that he would be the new 'Captain' and he would chose his own team. Suzie was the first he chose and she was the first to die. Gwen was the last. Toshiko had no choice and Owen resists choosing anything. Ianto chose him. These are his people and they have to be ready. |
