User Name: Demotu Age statement (I am over 16): yes Character name: Ianto Jones Birthdate: August 19th, 1983 Age: twenty-four Description: Alternatively described in jest both as “baby-faced” and “old man”, Ianto is best described as an attractive Welshman with dark hair, blue eyes and impeccable manners. Ianto prides himself on his composure and carries himself with grace and poise beyond his years, preferring the more formal attire of two and three-piece suits at work, though he is rumoured to own at least one pair of denims. Tall and slim, Ianto often blends in with the background, only occasionally breaking his serious façade with small, knowing smiles. Personality: At only twenty-four, it is fair to say that Ianto Jones isn’t exactly sure what kind of a man he is, though the traumas of his last few years, starting with the battle of Canary Warf, have certainly played a significant role in forming his character. Capable of intense loyalty, Ianto is very skilled at putting aside his own personal needs for those of others, and has demonstrated that he is capable of manipulation and deceit in order to perform what he sees as his duties. Though he is willing to resort to violence as a means to gain an end and is not adverse to fieldwork, Ianto prefers the comparative order of the archives to the chaos of the field. Previously employed as a junior researcher, Ianto is skilled at sifting through data and gleaning salient information from a variety of sources. Ianto is most comfortable when he knows where everything is and precisely what is going on, and often works overtime at the Hub rather than let things fall to the wayside. Ianto is always focused on the task at hand, though he is never adverse to a sarcastic comment to make his point. His dry sense of humour is often lost on those not paying attention, and Ianto doesn’t suffer fools easily, though he tends to keep his opinions on others to himself. Unselfish and practical, Ianto is always willing to help out his teammates, providing they ask nicely. Though he considers most of the team friends, Ianto is extremely reserved and does not share details about his life unless asked first; similarly, he is slow to pry into others’ secrets. Specialties: Plenty of overtime at Torchwood, initially to allay Jack’s suspicions with regards to Lisa, means Ianto has a thorough knowledge of the contents of the archives, and is often the second – after Jack – to recognize artifacts and alien species, as well as having a more detailed understanding of Torchwood’s history than most. Ianto also is well familiar with the layout of the Hub. With a head for detail, Ianto manages everything at the Hub that no one else thinks about, as well as much of the paperwork Jack would rather not be bothered with. All this aside, he’s best known in the Hub for his skill with the coffeemaker. Problems: His inexperience in the field often leads him to hesitate before shooting. Though capable of intense loyalty, it has clearly been misdirected in the past. Ianto’s reticence to share personal information often leads to loneliness and isolation. Some skills: Coffee-making. Paperwork. Research. Computer hacking. Flirting without actually flirting. Directing lost tourists. Driving the SUV with the lights on through rush-hour traffic. Determining the dietary requirements of any alien prisoners (since Owen doesn’t seem to care enough to bother). Talking down government bureaucrats. History: Son of a master tailor, Ianto had plenty of intelligence but no particular focus until he was recruited to work for Torchwood London as a junior researcher at the early age of twenty, where he found both a passion for the work and a love interest in his coworker, Lisa Hallet. Canary Warf saw his job destroyed and his girlfriend seriously injured, partially converted to a Cyberwoman. Left with little else, Ianto funneled his cunning and charm into securing a position at Torchwood Three, determined to save Lisa at any cost. Attempting, and eventually succeeding at convincing Jack Harkness to hire him, despite his connections to Torchwood One, Ianto took the generic job of “support” and proceeded to move the partially-human body of Lisa into the lower levels of the Hub. At Torchwood, Ianto discovered his talent for detail-oriented work, becoming Torchwood Cardiff’s behind-the-scenes man with a long list of responsibilities but not a whole lot of attention. Ianto made it his goal to be both necessary and unobtrusive at Torchwood Three, and formulated a butler-like personality to prevent the team from paying too much attention to his activities. With the death of Lisa Hallet at the hands of his teammates, Ianto was forced to reveal a little more of his character to his boss and teammates, and it became clear he was a man capable of intense loyalty, but also deception. Though he was suspended for three weeks, and subsequently on probation, Ianto returned to Torchwood Three and his former duties, and eventually Jack began training him as a field agent in an attempt to include him more in the team. His first mission into the field was a disastrous encounter with human cannibals; an experience that left Ianto injured but solidified both his loyalty to the team and their trust in him. As he has spent more time as a field agent, Ianto has gained confidence, though he shows no particular desire to lead and still prefers the order of the archives to the chaos of fieldwork. Ianto’s loyalty to Torchwood cumulated in the events preceding the rise of Abbadon, where he shot his coworker, Owen Harper, in an attempt to prevent him from breaking the rules about manipulating the rift. However, he, as was the rest of the team, was successfully manipulated by Bilis Manger to completely open the rift following Jack and Toshiko Sato’s return from 1941, an event that led to Jack’s (non-permanent) death and the Earth’s near destruction. Following Jack’s disappearance, Ianto assumed the rest of Torchwood’s administrative duties and did not spend a significant amount of time in the field. |
