User Name: Notevery Age Statement (I am over 16): yes Character Name: Toshiko Sato Age: 28 (born the 18th of July) Description: Tosh is easy to overlook: naturally petite with a quiet, unobtrusive presence, people quite often simply fail to notice her. When they do she seems unremarkable, on the surface at least: a young Japanese woman, dark hair cut to her shoulders with a fringe swept to one side, often wearing a slim pair of black-framed glasses. She rarely wears obvious makeup, but she is always neat and carefully dressed, whether that means heels and a skirt or well-fitting jeans. Though Tosh can look stern as she frowns over some complex calculation, her face lights up when she smiles, often with an almost girlish openness. Personality: Tosh is a private person, and the most obvious facet of her personality during work hours is her endless, dedicated professionalism. In her gratitude to Jack for saving her from UNIT she has thrown herself entirely into her work, and her focus is intimidating: an all-nighter on a new piece of alien tech is hardly rare. Capable and logical, approaching each problem with meticulous care, Tosh runs the risk of appearing pedantic and, to some of the other more playful members of the team, a bit of a cold fish. A gossip over coffee comes significantly less easily to her than programming, and she's always felt a bit of an outsider in the team. Quiet and reserved, Tosh tends to keep herself to herself, restrained by a shyness and a self-doubt which is constantly holding her back. She has never truly admitted how talented she is at her job, and her habit of self-deprecation extends to her personal life where she is lonely and equally insecure. With no real past luck with relationships thanks to her shyness, and after suffering years of snarkiness from Owen, she can withdraw back in on herself. Despite her own insecurities, however, Tosh is a naturally gentle, warm hearted person. She tries to look for the positive and, though she understands that sometimes nothing can be done, it's not in her nature to give up without a fight. It's almost unheard of her to bitch about anyone at all, and she's always willing to see the best in people—even if it's against all available evidence. She genuinely cares for her teammates, and worries for their wellbeing, leaving someone's favourite sweet pastry on their desk if they've been looking unhappy or just trying to chat. Sometimes her persistence, especially with Owen, can be painful to watch. Specialties: Tosh is a technological genius, and one of the world's foremost experts in decoding alien languages. Her official mandate is to research the potential applications of alien technology, and she's uniquely talented at testing, modifying and understanding the tools that come through the Rift. Machines of all kinds make instinctive sense to her, as her pre-UNIT experience with the sonic modulator shows: her ability to make things is almost uncanny. If there's a gadget, Tosh is the one to call. Her research into alien computer systems is more than enough to earn her a PhD, but for obvious reasons she's had to call a halt on her dreams of adding those letters to her CV. Problems: Toshiko is better at communicating with computers than humans, and her insecurities and shyness have led to her having no real friends at all. There's no emotional support base outside of the group to which she can turn, and the loneliness—and suppressed emotion— takes its toll. As such, Torchwood is, more or less, her life. Perhaps most dangerously she can be far too guarded for her own good: scared of being hurt she can shun the very intimacy she craves, wrapping herself protectively in solitude, withdrawing into her shell. When she is finally convinced that someone likes her, she can be blinded by her pleasure at being wanted—Mary being a case in point. Physically, Tosh's biggest problem is her size: with her small build she simply doesn't have the stamina or strength of some of the others on the team. Some Skills: Toshiko is bilingual between Japanese and English. At the cutting edge of computer technology, her abilities in the fields of programming and remote surveillance are second to none in the team; with her intelligence and extremely logical mind she relishes a challenge. Though Tosh is capable enough in the field she really feels at home coordinating operations in the Hub, and she has an excellent ability to multitask and keep a clear head under pressure. She's surprisingly good at pool, and has enough first aid training to be useful in an emergency. History: Toshiko may be British, but her heritage is Japanese. Her maternal grandfather earned his citizenship working for the British as a codebreaker at Bletchley Park during the Second World War, hired for his outstanding mathematical ability; both of her parents are British citizens. Toshiko herself was born on an RAF base, where she and her parents—both employees of the Royal Air Force—lived for only two years before they emigrated back to Japan. Though Toshiko's parents were careful to take her to regular English classes their little girl grew up feeling entirely Japanese, and was devastated when they returned to England. Thinking that she would integrate quickly her parents sent her to an elite English-speaking all-girls private school in London, where eleven-year-old Tosh was promptly miserable, feeling ostracized and irrevocably different. She never recovered from being uprooted so entirely from her home and instead withdrew into her work—which no one complained loudly enough about, since she was so remarkably good at it. After excelling at her A levels, Tosh studied Mathematics and Computer Science at Oxford, coming back four years later, aged twenty-two, having aced her masters degree. Almost immediately she was hired by the Ministry of Defence to work in a scientific think-tank and research centre, a job which she loved: she could be as quiet and as diligent as she wanted. After being blackmailed by a terrorist organization into stealing the plans for, and creating, a sonic weapon, Tosh was arrested by UNIT and incarcerated without trial in an anonymous detention centre. Only the intervention of Jack Harkness saved her: Tosh jumped at the opportunity to escape, though she was devastated by the enforced estrangement from her beloved mother. Though effectively conscripted with little or no choice into the team, Tosh has taken to Torchwood naturally, excelling at her job. In the years since she arrived she has become an indispensable, if not scene-stealing member of the team, burying herself in her research, working massive amounts of overtime and sending off her regular postcards to her mother, knowing that Jack is aware of each one. Despite severely endangering the team in one particularly memorable incident with a shapeshifting alien calling itself 'Mary', Tosh's overall record has been impeccable. After Jack Harkness' disappearance she became more outgoing as the team restructured itself around his absence. Tosh has generally good relationships with the rest of the team: she looks up to Jack more than anyone in the world, and is endlessly grateful to him; Gwen is nice; Ianto has a quiet, effective presence which she feels something in common with; she always liked Suzie, too, even if all she did was listen to Suzie talk. As for Owen, Tosh fell hopelessly and painfully in love with him as soon as she met him, and she's spent years being constantly hurt by his snarky remarks and put-downs. If he smiles at her she glows—but there'll always be some nasty comment later. Realistically she knows how much of an arse he is. It just doesn't change how she feels about him. Toshiko's Psych Evaluation (for future reference) Tosh’s questionnaire is filled out in very neat blue ballpoint, as if she took her time over the presentation. (It certainly makes a change from her scrawled equations.) Her handwriting is rounded and slopes ever so slightly backwards, and here and there a keen observer might notice that hesitations have led to slight smudges of ink. Otherwise, very little of interest is said, mostly since even if Tosh has tried to avoid lying, she’s also avoided very large chunks of the truth. * Name: Toshiko Sato Age: 28 Sex/Gender: Female Marital/Relationship Status: Unmarried Family/Children: No children; living parents and grandparents Occupation: Technical Specialist (xenotechnology) Are you presently, or have you previously been in the care of another counselor or mental health professional? Past Logs Roadtrip Six months after Owen joins Torchwood he and Tosh go chasing after an alien pet. Owen gets covered in gore, Tosh puts her foot in it, and they both end up soaking wet. Checkup (Part One) and Checkup (Part Two) Tosh and Owen have a chat about Jack, bullet wounds and what happens when Owen unzips his jeans. New Toys Tosh tests a gun that makes toast, and finds time to ask Jack whether he thought he was leaving them forever. Another Day at the Office Tosh asks Ianto about what it's like to have Jack back. Night Work Monday, Monday Tosh is disgusted by the human puree Owen works with, but can't imagine what created it. First Impressions Tosh meets a very polite stranger who is both cute and also calls her 'ma'am'. Tosh's Flat Tosh Googles Andy. Case of the Tuesdays Tosh brings the team breakfast. Research Tosh looks through the evidence. Thoroughly Trucked Tosh, Andy, Owen and Jack investigate the truck. Andy is clearly not entirely okay with being pushed in at the deep end, and Tosh worries. Research Part Two Tosh goes back to her desk and talks business with Jack. Working stuff out makes her happy, Andy goes out to buy lunch, and Tosh doesn't ask Owen to come downstairs with her. Tuesday Lunch The team eat takeaway food, discuss the case and Tosh makes Andy blush. Triple Header Tosh asks Owen for help on the case, and hangs around unnecessarily to watch Andy drop his pants (for jabs). Symptoms and signs Toshiko's physical and mental states decline rapidly, and she ends up having a disastrous encounter with Andy in the firing range. No More Games The others save Toshiko's life, but she is still terrified of Andy. Jack exerts his influence, and Owen discovers Tosh's past. Supervision Owen takes Tosh to have a shower, and she finds out about shooting Andy. Sleepover Tosh hides away in Jack's office, where she talks to Jack, Dr Greene and Owen. Tea and Sympathy Ianto takes care of Tosh, but she's angry when she finds out exactly what Jack asked of him. Comedown Tosh is in terrible pain, and Owen helps her out and tells a lie. Special Delivery Ianto brings Tosh some supplies, and she asks him about Jack. Maybe On The Way Out (and its brief followup post.) Tosh sees Andy for the first time after shooting him. She cries and he forgives her, but things go downhill when she finds out what he knows. In Brief Jack decides to try telling his employees about going away for a change. Tosh worries about UNIT. The Package - Handoff UNIT arrive. The package--fumble Jack tells the team that they're going on a fieldtrip. Carpool Tosh offers to drive Andy home because she can't bear to be alone. Journey's beginning The team gather in the garage. Transfer Point During the flight to the Valiant, Jack tells the team about the Year That Never Was. Afternoon Arrivals Torchwood touch down on the Valiant. Officers' Deck The team are shown to their new rooms by an attractive UNIT doctor who knows Jack. Tea and Searches Tosh and Martha investigate Jean-Marie Fournier's keeper. Despite everything, Tosh discovers that she quite likes Martha. All Watched Over By Machines Of Loving Grace Tosh meets Jean-Marie, who calls her both a ghost and a skylark. After Exploring Tosh goes back to touch base and walks in on Jack and Ianto touching each other. Edited by Toshiko Sato, Feb 25 2009, 03:42 AM.

Notes (work in progress) Skills & Education * Tosh learnt French until GCSE, and she was a dedicated but not particularly talented student. Her reading comprehension is far better than her speaking ability, which was held back by shyness. Physical * Tosh is long-sighted and has worn glasses since she was in her early teens. She prefers them to contact lenses as she doesn't particularly like putting lenses in; she dislikes touching her eye. Emotional * Tosh doesn't like the sight of blood, though it doesn't disrupt her functioning. * When she's going through a 'bad patch' Tosh suffers from claustraphobia in small, enclosed spaces. * She suffers from nightmares, not all of them obviously related to her experiences. * Toshiko imagined herself getting married and having children. * Being successful in her parents' eyes is very important for Tosh, and that's measured more on 'contribution to the world' than money. She feels like she struggles to keep up in a family overpopulated with very gifted people who did very important things. Social etc. * She was raised to be polite: you eat with your mouth closed (and not on public transport), take off your shoes if you're hanging around at home and take a gift if you're visiting someone for a meal etc. (even if it's only a token). * She's lived alone for all of her adult life since leaving university: first a flat near the MOD facility, followed by two flats in Cardiff (she moved into the second while Jack was away: it's closer to work, a nicer area and much more open-plan). Food * Though she's no chef, Tosh is rather a good cook; she learnt from her mother and paternal grandmother, and her maternal grandfather used to especially like it. Unfortunately, usually after she comes home from work Tosh doesn't have much time to prepare anything exciting: she might make some pasta, tuna salad. Breakfast tends to be quick, usually toast. If she has more time, she'll put more effort into what she cooks, though she still sticks to cooking simple things well: spaghetti bolognese, yakitori. At home she eats more western food than Japanese, but she goes through stages. It's best to cook for others, but she doesn't really get the chance. * Her favourite foods are onion bhajis, smoked salmon, unadon (a rice dish made with grilled eel coated in a sweet sauce) and nikujaga (a comfort food that she misses, especially in winter, made of meat, potatoes and onion stewed in sweetened soy). If she's feeling in a sweet-tooth mood she likes baklava and Chocolate Midnight Cookie Häagen-Dazs from the tub. * Tosh has a well-stocked kitchen, and she's conscious of eating healthily. She has the money to buy organic, free-range food. She's conscious of air miles and keeping things seasonal. * She prefers white wine to cocktails, and she'll quite happily have a pint if she goes out to the pub with the team or has a rare night at home. Family * Toshiko's father loves the countryside, and in her childhood they went on various walks and picnics—though all of them daytrips. * Tosh has lived with both of her parents and her grandmother since she was two, and it still feels a little strange to live alone, even if she appreciates solitude. * Tosh's parents have always reminded her that her gifts are directly in proportion to her responsibilities. * The proudest Tosh's parents have ever been of her is when she was offered the job by the MOD; her Bletchley Park grandfather took her out for a big dinner and spoiled her rotten. * Toshiko's maternal grandfather lives in London with one of her aunts (her mother was one of four girls). He's the one who worked for Bletchley Park during the war; his wife, Toshiko's maternal grandmother, died before Toshiko was born. * Two of Toshiko's maternal aunts live in London, and one is in Japan--Toshiko's favourite auntie. Her paternal aunt lives in San Francisco, and her paternal uncle in London, where he works for a pharmaceutical research company. * Toshiko has several cousins; one, Mayumi, is married with a newborn child. * Tosh had a cat when she was a little girl; it was put down after suffering with cancer. History * Toshiko's mother worked in intelligence for the RAF; her father was an engineer officer. * When Toshiko was born her mother left the RAF, though her father continued working and travelling with them. When Toshiko was two her paternal grandfather died, and her family emigrated to Japan to care for his widow, thinking that it would only be for a few years and Toshiko would have the chance to experience Japanese culture. At this time Toshiko's father left the RAF to become an engineering consultant for the nuclear power industry. * When Toshiko was eleven her parents decided to return to the UK, with her tenacious grandmother. Her father returned to work for the RAF, and Toshiko was left at home with her grandmother and mother, who by that time was at home working on her doctorate. It was over these years that Tosh—too shy to go out much herself—built up her intensely strong relationship with her mother. * During Toshiko's second year at university her family moved back to Tokyo, this time for good: her parents had decided to settle there. Toshiko stayed in the UK for her study and then her career; by that time, either both or neither country feels like home and Tosh isn't sure which. Edited by Toshiko Sato, Jul 29 2009, 02:44 AM.
