|Gwen Cooper||Apr 23 2009, 09:36 AM Post #1|
User Name: such_heights
Age statement (I am over 16): yes
Character name: Gwen Elizabeth Cooper
Description: Gwen is a good-looking woman with dark brown shoulder-length hair, brown eyes, a distinctive gap-toothed smile and what has sometimes been described to her as an 'honest face'. She is both slim and physically fit, and favours casual clothes that facilitate her work, usually trainers, jeans, and a t-shirt and jacket.
Personality: Stubborn, opinionated and compassionate, Gwen lives her life with an intensity that always keeps things interesting. She's committed to doing the right thing, and will do anything to overcome the obstacles she perceives to be in the way of that. She had a tumultuous first year at Torchwood, but it's left her stronger, more centred, and with a better understanding of her own capabilities.
She never had a natural desire for leadership, but she gives her all to every project and she'll step up as needed -- most extensively after Jack's sudden and mysterious disappearance. She's quick to form emotional connections with others, and she's profoundly empathetic. She believes very strongly that Torchwood can and should do more to help -- no doubt a feeling cultivated during her days with the police force.
Gwen is adaptable and quick to react and assert herself in any situation, which may be part of what got her hired at Torchwood in the first place. Although Torchwood leaves little time for interpersonal relationships -- frequently commented on by both her parents and her old friends -- Gwen has also managed the impressive feat of maintaining a long-term relationship. Her engagement to Rhys Williams is an outward sign of her determination to live a complete life, and though their future remains uncertain, she's committed to making it work.
Specialties: Her former job gives her a number of connections both within the police and with the wider community. Her knowledge of Cardiff and the local area is rivalled only by Ianto Jones.
Problems: Moral certainty is hard to come by in an institution like Torchwood. Gwen can struggle to fully comprehend a situation, but it doesn't always stop her from making judgements about right and wrong and acting accordingly regardless. She's not above using others for her own ends when she believes it's justified, and this becomes doubly problematic when her capacity for self-deception kicks in.
Some skills: Gwen has a natural ability to get others to open up to her, enhanced by some police training. Her personable and trust-worthy appearance makes her a useful public face for Torchwood when they must interact with the general public or pry for information. She has firearms training and an ever-expanding working knowledge of both Torchwood's database on alien life and its intricate computer systems.
History: Gwen grew up an only child in Swansea before going away to university to study history, where she met her future fiancé, Rhys. Uncertain of what she wanted to do post-degree, she floated between a number of jobs for a time before applying to the Cardiff branch of the South Wales Police. It proved to be both demanding and rewarding, with colleagues she loved working with, but Gwen leaped at the chance for something new when she fell into the lap of Jack Harkness and his covert organisation.
Since joining Torchwood, Gwen has met aliens, seen ghosts, had an affair, nearly died on a number of occasions, seen her boss shot by a colleague (twice), and almost witnessed the end of the world. It's been the most insane, exhilarating and terrifying experience of her life, but on balance she believes she's come out better for her experiences. She looks to the future with renewed strength of purpose and a healthy sense of trepidation.
