Toshiko's confusion bolstered him, and he stepped forward again, lowering his arms slightly. "Gwen, are you feeling alright? Nothing happened while you were out, did it?"

He's Adam," Tosh said, as though it were obvious. "You've been friends since you arrived. He's been here longer than any of us."

"Tosh, I've never seen him before in my life," said Gwen, a little desperate, because how could Tosh think otherwise? What had happened?

Adam was speaking now. "Gwen, are you feeling alright? Nothing happened while you were out, did it?"

Gwen gestured at Tosh. "Whatever you've done to her," she hissed, "you're going to put it right, right now."

She kept Adam's eyes on hers, staring him down while she quickly slipped her bag off her shoulder. Her hand rested on the fastening. She reckoned she could get her gun out in one move. She needed to get the upper hand here, then she could find out what was really going on.

"I haven't done anything," Adam said, keeping his voice even. "You want me to call Jack?" he asked as she shifted further, looking ready for a fight. "I can do that."

His eyes flicked to Tosh just for a moment, calling for backup, then he moved forward quickly, not giving Gwen any time to react.

Martha watched the exchange between Gwen and Adam with growing concern. How could Gwen not remember Adam at all, after working together for just over a year? What was going on here? She looked at Tosh, seeing her own confusion and worry reflected in the other woman's expression. Yes, something was definitely wrong, but she wasn't sure what. Or who was in the right, if anyone.

Now Gwen sounded a bit desperate, and that worried her. When Gwen got worked up she tended to over-react, and that wouldn't help anyone. Adam kept approaching her calmly, but it clearly wasn't having a soothing effect on Gwen. Just the opposite, in fact.

Gwen gestured at Tosh while still glaring at Adam. "Whatever you've done to her, you're going to put it right, right now."

"Calm down, Gwen, no one's done anything to Tosh," she said reassuringly, trying to de-fuse the situation. "Adam, maybe you should back away a bit, give Gwen a bit of space to sort herself out." But he held his position instead and offered to call Jack to clear up the misunderstanding. Martha wasn't sure that would help, but before she could say anything further, Adam rushed towards Gwen. "Adam, don't!" she called out too late, and pushed past Tosh, ready to intervene for the sake of keeping both her teammates from getting injured.

"No one's done anything to me," Tosh said indignantly at exactly the same time as Martha. "If something's happened to anyone then--"

She caught Adam's eye and stopped, though, instead stepping reflexively towards her desk and reaching for the drawer with her gun. Of course she'd never shoot on Gwen, but if she didn't misunderstand the other woman's reach for her handbag then something very, very strange was going on.

Something strange thing, as a matter of fact, did happen then: as Adam made a move for Gwen, and Martha shouted for him, Tosh found that her gun wasn't in her desk. She couldn't imagine why; it wasn't as if she was on probation for any misdemeanours. She didn't have time to focus on it, though: she was moving forward as fast as Martha, her hands raised protectively, only thinking about Adam.

"Gwen!"

Everyone sprang into motion at once, and Gwen took the opportunity to whip her gun out of her bag, pointing it at Adam's forehead as he made a lunge for her. She took two quick steps away from him.

"You stay back," she said, her voice low and dangerous.

Her heart sank as both Martha and Tosh rushed to his defence, willing human shields. appeared utterly duped by whatever Adam had done to them. She was outnumbered.

"Tosh, come on," said Gwen. "You know me, you trust me, listen to me. This man, whoever he's said he is, it's not true. Something's badly wrong here."

Martha and Tosh were in the way and Gwen winced inwardly at the thought of having to take a shot, but she still had a clear target on Adam, just. She tightened her finger around the gun.

"Stand down, or I'll shoot," she said.

The girls were in his way, he couldn't reach. Adam wondered idly what it might be like if Gwen shot him. Memories ran scattershot through his mind, Andy and Owen and Jack, trailing hints of pain and nausea. But that was them, pale weak humans made of flesh and blood.

He reached out, as if to push Tosh back, but memories and feelings arced out through his touch, tugging and suggesting to Tosh, placing her in front of him, blocking their curiosity and blocking Gwen's shot.

"Gwen, you've got to stop this." His voice was tinged with anger. "There's got to be something wrong with her, if she gets any farther, sedate her and put her in the cells until we can run some scans on her."

Gwen pulled a gun, training it on Adam, and Tosh's stomach plummeted.

"Tosh, come on. You know me, you trust me, listen to me. This man, whoever he's said he is, it's not true. Something's badly wrong here."

"It's Adam," Tosh said, the disbelief in her voice torn with anguish and fear at the unspeakable idea that Gwen might shoot, that Adam might--her heart pounded at her ribs. "He's one of us, Gwen. Put the gun down."

Adam reached to selflessly push her away but Tosh pushed past him, fear for herself entirely swamped by a wave of love. She'd never asked herself if she'd die for him before, but it didn't surprise her at all to find out that she would.

"Gwen, you've got to stop this," Adam said, his voice sharper. "There's got to be something wrong with her, if she gets any farther, sedate her and put her in the cells until we can run some scans on her."

"Stand down or I'll shoot," Gwen said, and Tosh reached her hand back to grip Adam's wrist, keeping him behind her.

"You're confused, Gwen," Tosh said. "If you hurt him..."

She trailed off, her hand tightening on Adam's, and in the sudden slowness of looking down the muzzle of Gwen's gun she had time to think about velocity and force and impact, how far a bullet could go through flesh. Was her body enough--? But it was all she had.

"Don't make me do this," Gwen said, stretching out her arm a little further, sounding much surer than she felt. Tosh was blocking Adam completely now, and there was no way she was going to shoot. But Adam didn't know that, and she didn't have any other options.

"Martha, Tosh, think about it," said Gwen. "I've been away, you've been here, isn't it much more likely something happened to you and not me? He's lying, he's using some kind of alien tech ... if you'll just help me, I'll find a way to prove it, and no one has to get hurt."

Before she could stop herself, she was thinking about what had happened to the others. Where were they? Adam had already mentioned Jack, was he under the spell too?

Everything was moving too fast, and before Martha could say another thing, Gwen had pulled a gun on Adam, and then Tosh had pushed in front of him, shielding him from Gwen. Adam was getting angry now, and ordered her to sedate and imprison Gwen. Unfortunately for him, she didn't keep syringes loaded with sedatives in her pocket for just such an occasion. Meanwhile, Gwen was trying to convince her and Tosh that something had happened to them and not her.

Martha knew Adam, had worked closely with him, and she had no doubt that he belonged here. And yet, there was the CCTV footage and the way he and then Tosh had behaved that had put her on alert. Could Gwen be right? She tried desperately to think of what to do. Jack and the others were out in the field, and Gwen, Tosh, and Adam were in a stand-off. She was the only one who could act and take command of the situation before it all spiralled out of control.

"All of you, stop!" Martha commanded in a tone of voice she'd picked up from the General. "We're all panicking here instead of thinking. That's going to get someone hurt or killed, and none of us wants that, yeah? We're not going to get this sorted with guns"--she glanced at Gwen--"or by pressuring someone who's upset and confused"--she gave Adam a hard look. "We all know better than that. Everyone take a deep breath and stand down. Now." She looked at each of her teammates in turn, willing them to listen to her.

Martha's shout took Adam by surprise. He glared at her, then turned his gaze to Gwen. "I just don't want anyone to get hurt," he said, voice a growl. "Gwen is reacting dangerously. Don't think I won't lock this Hub down if I think she's going to be a danger."

Martha returned Adam's glare with one of her own. "I don't doubt you will, Adam, but standing in front of a teammate holding a loaded gun could also be considered as reacting dangerously. Back away, both of you. I don't know what's going on here, but Jack and the others will be back soon, and then we can all get this sorted properly. Don't create a new patient or two for me, please."

Adam's threat of a lockdown made Gwen tense anew. If Jack was outside the Hub with the rest of the team, then that was where Gwen needed to be too. Adam was still blocking the exit, and she suspected Tosh or Martha would help him restrain her (and didn't that thought sting, that they wouldn't trust her, would treat her like she was mad).

She started to lower her gun, trying to make herself appear open to negotiation. "Okay, okay," she said. "Martha, you're right. Maybe I'm the one who's confused."

If she remembered correctly, there was another way out, through the lower levels. She took one last look at Tosh and Martha, saw that it was useless, and made a run for it.

Gwen slipped away, his easy solution with it. He cursed, and everything in him strained to follow after her, strike her down and show her just how wrong she'd been to question him. But Martha was radiating tension and disapproval, barring his path.

He had to deal with these two first. "Dammit. What the hell's happened to her? Another compromised --" He shook his head, and reached for his earpiece. "Ianto! Ianto!" Nothing.

He turned to Tosh. "Find her. And track back where she's been, see what happened." As long as he had the Hub, he had the higher ground. Maybe he'd have to lose the fascinating treasure trove that was Jack's memories, but that was a temporary setback.

He turned to Martha, face set with fury borrowed from a thousand memories, disappointment and worry. "I don't care what experience you've had with UNIT, or anywhere else. You are not a senior officer here, you do not call the shots. Torchwood has different ways of dealing with this, different priorities. I know what I'm doing, and don't you ever question that again."

He turned away. "Tell Jack something's wrong with Gwen, then help me find her. I'm going after Ianto." He squeezed Tosh's hand once and then let go, stalking off towards the stairs. He would stop at one of the weapons lockers in the lower levels.

Martha stood her ground in the face of Adam's blistering fury. She knew he'd be angry at her for stepping in like she did, but she'd had no better options: things had been escalating too rapidly and the stakes were too high. Her first duty was to the health and safety of the team--all of them--and she wouldn't betray that for anyone, regardless of their rank. When she didn't reply, Adam turned away from her, tacitly dismissing her and moving on to give instructions to Toshiko as he made to leave and follow after Gwen.

She took in a deep breath and released it slowly as Adam disappeared through the doors to the Archives, then she returned to her workstation, giving Tosh a worried look as she passed her. "Something's not right here, Tosh. Things have been off lately, and I don't just mean this incident with Gwen. There's the trouble with Mainframe and the CCTV malfunction. And everyone seems unsettled lately, even Adam, and he's always the one to calm things down and cheer us all up. Always. I don't understand what's going on, but I've seen my share of bad days at Torchwood since I've been here, and it's never been like this."

As she spoke, Martha began running through the internal Hub CCTV feeds, locating the ones in the lower levels and scanning back in the footage to track her teammates, looking for motion and indications of direction. Gwen was difficult to spot in her black leather jacket as she moved through the dim corridors, while Adam was relatively easy to track. After all, he wasn't trying to hide from anyone. Still, she could follow them from camera to camera with some help from Mainframe.

"Tosh, tell Adam that she's on sublevel 3 now, there's only a couple of storage rooms and the firing range down there," Martha called out. The sooner they could get Gwen back and safe, the sooner all this would be sorted.

She found them all in the firing range and watched the encounter, hoping that Adam would be able to de-fuse the situation and she wouldn't be needed to patch anyone up after this. She was surprised to see Ianto there as well, but then he'd spent much of the past couple of days in the Archives, so he probably heard the chase and went to help.

When the CCTV feed suddenly died, Martha cursed. It was a bad time for Mainframe to act up again. "Tosh, I've lost them, the CCTV's down again," she said. "Go and see if Adam needs help. I'm getting my kit in case it's needed, and I'll be down right after you. Call me when you get there, yeah, and let me know what's happening."

Martha stood and rushed towards Medbay.

Tosh stayed stubbornly quiet as she moved back to her terminal, not responding to Martha's words—except, perhaps, to stab at her keyboard with an unusual venom. Her trembling fingers hit some of the wrong keys, and however much she tried to rationalize her shaking away (adrenaline, she told herself, it was only natural) the fact remained that Gwen had pulled a gun on Adam, and there was no one Tosh would side with over him.

There was silence for a moment, and Tosh's bad mood wasn't helped by the fact that Martha found the footage first. At least it would mean Adam would be informed—and right on cue his voice was in her ear.

”Tosh, have you found sign of her? Where's she going?”

“Sublevel three,” Tosh said with only the faintest hint of a wobble in her voice, honing in on the feed. “It looks like she's probably heading to the firing range.” She paused. “Adam—be careful.”

When the feed died, Tosh didn't need to be told to go: she was already out of her chair when Martha spoke, her animosity forgotten at the prospect of Adam being alone downstairs with Gwen, who was acting strangely, and Ianto, who just was strange. She nodded quickly to Martha.

“I'll call you. Don't take any risks, okay?”

She was already halfway down the stairs, her heels clattering over the metal, when the lockdown siren went off. Reflexively Tosh pressed herself to the wall for a moment, torn between the fact that she was unarmed and going in blind and the fact that the man she loved was down here, possibly hurt. She pressed her hand to her earpiece.

“Adam, where are you? What's happening?”
