Gwen shut the door behind her with a happy sigh, glad to be done travelling. She let her keys drop to the hallway table with a jangle and followed Rhys into kitchen.

She leaned against the doorway, watching as Rhys unpacked milk, bread and pasta sauce. She felt a slightly goofy smile slide over her face, still feeling the lazy contentment of the last few days, the all-too-rare bliss of having nothing to do and plenty of time to do it in. She walked over to Rhys as he put pasta onto boil, leaning up to kiss his cheek. He grinned at her and wrapped his arm around her waist.

"Thank you," Gwen said, leaning into him. "The last few days have been brilliant."

He glanced at her. "You're not sloping off on me already, are you?"

"No, no," she said hastily. "Jack can wait until morning."

She watched the saucepan as it began to boil; such an ordinary thing, the sort of thing she hardly ever paid any attention to these days. No time to stand and stare, she thought, a half-remembered bit of an English lesson crossing her mind. Well, she still had time, just a little more, just now.

The next morning, and the world still seemed bright and easy. Gwen got up slowly and late, savouring the last chance she'd get for a while for a pot of tea and the paper and no rush to be anywhere.

"I'm not due back until tomorrow," she said to Rhys over breakfast, "but I might just pop into work quickly, check nothing's exploded in my absence. Fancy a stroll into town?"

Rhys shifted a little, but the mood was good -- everything had gone perfectly while they were away -- and he didn't want to be the one to break it.

"Just a quick stop," he said lightly. "Think we'd have all heard about it by now if something had happened." He kissed her cheek. "Besides, remember you're still on vacation, so any work you do you won't be getting paid for."

Gwen laughed and squeezed his hand. "Half an hour, tops, I promise." She slid out of her seat and went to fetch her bag. No need to phone ahead - Rhys was right about one thing. No news was, in all likelihood, good news.

Rhys insisted on driving, figuring that if he could guarantee that he'd be waiting, Gwen might be less likely to linger. Going down to the Bay didn't seem like the most sensible place, but he supposed maybe she was just meeting up with someone, rather than going into the office itself.

There was a coffee stand up the road, and his stomach growled.
