Ianto opened the heavy door to the range and flicked on a bank of overhead lights. He surveyed the weapons laid out on the table and an array of spent shells clustered near the duct-taped "stand here" lines on the floor and shook his head.

Might as well tidy up, since I'm down here, he thought, then placed the diary on the table then dropped to his knees to gather a stray shell casing which had rolled underneath and plunk it into the grey bucket bin. After clearing the casings, he pulled the roll of targets secured with a rubber band -- old targets. He flipped through them. Jack. Owen. Suzie. Tosh. This was before he'd been trained, Jack holding his arms steady, the sharp tang of gunpowder and echoes of a report in the air, even after he'd taken off the earguards. The targets were dated, so everyone could mark their progress.

Ianto unrolled another rubber band and rifled through the stack. Owen again, and Tosh and Suzie. Ianto's first efforts and Gwen's, all labelled with Jack's confident scrawl in marker pen.

Ianto sat back on his heels and remembered Adam at the Christmas party, twirling Tosh with a grin as Jack and Suzie clapped and hooted. Adam accepting a take-away styro cup of coffee and holstering his weapon.

Where were Adam's targets?

Gwen ran through the lower levels of the Hub, running on instinct rather than conscious thought. She had to get out, she had to get out, it was the only thing she could think of. Once that goal was achieved, she could tackle her next mission, regaining control of the Hub. Her gun slipped in a little in her sweaty palm and she tightened her grip, trying to let her feet drop lightly and make her escape as quietly as she could.

She found herself approaching the shooting range and skidded inside, a chance to catch her breath if nothing else. She came to an abrupt halt, startled to see someone already there.

"Ianto!" she said, a little breathless, overcome with relief. Then she frowned, because she didn't know if this was cause for joy or not. "Ianto, I need you to trust me. Something's happened here while I've been away, and I need you to believe me even if it sounds mad."

"Gwen?" Ianto set the sheaf of targets aside. "Thought you weren't due back until tomorr-", he began, before he turned to see her flushed and panting a bit. "Oh. Sorry. What's up?"

He took a step forward but stopped when saw a wary look in her eyes. She looked almost frightened -- of what, he couldn't imagine.

"'Course I trust you. Gwen... what's the matter?"

"We need to get out of the Hub," Gwen said, looking at Ianto intently, willing him to side with her on this. "There's an intruder situation and I lost control of it, I need to find Jack and the others and get some backup. There's somebody here, tampering with memories, calling himself Adam. He's already got to Martha and Tosh, they think that he's a member of the team. I lost control of the situation," she admitted. She searched Ianto's face, hoping against hope that Adam hadn't got to him too.

Ianto cocked his head.

"Adam? Adam Smith? He's not an intruder. He's one of us, Gwen." He paused for a moment, rubbed his chin and offered a wry smile. "My memories are, somewhat unfortunately, all intact, down to the time my bicycle was stol-"

He stopped mid-reflection when he saw Gwen's lips tighten in frustration.

"Are you sure you're okay? Adam would actually probably be the best person to talk to. I just saw him in Mainframe not 20 minutes ago."

"Bloody hell, you've got to be kidding me," Gwen muttered, her fear retreating a little to be replaced by frustration. "He can't have completely messed up everything in the few days I've been gone - is there anything, anything at all about his behaviour that seems weird? Anything about your memories of him? Because I've never seem him before today, and that's the honest truth. He's not supposed to be here, and I don't know what he intends to do, but it's not good."

Ianto considered Gwen's question and the possibility that she might not be completely mad.

"Well...no." He paused. "But I have memories of him. Of all of us." He thought back to Adam and Tosh dancing, Adam showing him round on the day he was hired and taking them out for lunch just last week.

Ianto stopped again and looked at Gwen, his brow wrinkled. "But you're not there. I don't have any memory of you and Adam together, ever. He wasn't at your wedding, was he? That's rather...odd, isn't it?"

He turned towards the table which served as the makeshift armoury and flicked at the roll of targets. "And, okay... this is a bit stupid, but I was just wondering why Adam's targets weren't here. And he was acting a bit strange in Mainframe, as if I'd interrupted him -- since when does Tosh let anyone muck about in there?"

Gwen nodded encouragingly, heartened that Ianto at least wasn't rushing to defend Adam's honour or something similarly absurd.

"I know it sounds mad, but it's the truth. He's wrong, this is all wrong. Listen, Ianto, when I was upstairs things got violent, he was trying to get to me to - alter my mind, or whatever. You have to get me out of here before he finds me, please." She was aware she was sounding dramatic, but she didn't have a lot of time for subtle, nuanced argument. "If he gets to me too then none of us will ever know that anything's wrong, he'll have won."

Adam made his way down the stairs cautiously. He couldn't tell where Gwen had gone, there was no sign of her. He tried to think like her, where she might flee, but he didn't know what was inside her head.

He growled in frustration, and pressed on, going deeper, listening for voices. He didn't have any memories that were helping him with this.

"Tosh, have you found sign of her? Where's she going?"

"If he gets to me too then none of us will ever know that anything's wrong, he'll have won."
Ianto nodded and took a breath, then stopped, mid-inhale.

"Wait. Violent? Did someone hurt you? Threaten you?" Whatever Gwen was talking about, she was genuinely distressed. Ianto decided he wasn't going to make it worse by arguing with her. They could discuss this somewhere else.

Before she could reply he took her upper arm. She was reluctant. Shaking. "Of course there's a way out; there's always a back exit. Come on." He tugged at her sleeve. "I'll show you."

Almost as an afterthought, Ianto reached over to the table and picked up his journal.

Gwen shut her eyes in a second's wash of relief. They might actually make it out of this after all.

"Where are Jack and the others anyway?" she asked sotto voce. "We need to find them."

"They're out on a mission - he and Andy and Owen. Loose ends after that Haraxxon thing. Really, they should be back soon if you want to wait-"

He stopped after he caught a glance at Gwen, who was biting her lip in agitation. "Or not. C'mon, let's go."

He led her towards a closet at the back of the gun range. There was a lever inside which killed the security monitor feed to the main level and allowed egress through a tunnel exit. Ianto had been stowing gear one afternoon and had tripped it before asking Jack what it did. He thought he might be the only one who was aware of it. Until now.

OOC: Assuming Tosh will give Adam a reply that leads him in the correct direction, if not directly to them. I'll edit that in once we get that.

Stalking down the corridor, Adam could hear the quiet vibration of voices emanating from the range. He paused outside the doorway for a moment, trying to hear better, but all he could hear was footsteps on gravel, moving away.

Away --? Jack's memories flitted through his mind -- Jack, bored and restless, needing a way out without his leash. A nod and a wink to one of the laborers, filling in the old tunnel -- He sprang forward.

Clearing the firing stalls, Ianto and Gwen were nearing the far side of the weapons range. "I see you've found our missing teammate," he said loudly, and for a moment there was silence. "Gwen, come upstairs and have Martha take a look at you. I won't touch, I promise."

Lying was easy. He wondered how fast he could run.

He wondered if it wouldn't be easier just to erase her.

Ianto caught Gwen's eye, shot a look down towards the tunnel exit and saw that she knew where to go. He turned and stopped, pasting on a smile.

"I didn't know Gwen was missing. She was just telling me about her trip."

Gwen smiled as pleasantly as she could. "That's right. You know, you're right, I probably ought to check in with Martha - just hang on a second, would you?"

She shifted a little, getting ready to make a break for it. She'd find the others, and Jack would believe her, he'd know what to do.

"You're the one with the gun, Gwen," Adam replied, his voice rising instinctually. He stepped closer. "This isn't like you."

He was made of thoughts and air, energy and power. If she tried to shoot him, he'd make her pay. Tear her mind apart, remould it. Ianto wouldn't prove an obstacle either. None of them would.

"I'm here because I'm part of the team. And I won't have you hurt any of them, either." He kept his eyes locked on Gwen, but he could feel Ianto too, heart thudding and beating in terror. "We can fix this."

Gwen stared Adam down, her mind clearing to only one thought - get out.

"Oh, I'll fix this," she said, low, reaching behind her. Her hand found the lever and she glanced at Ianto, nodding. She shoved the lever down.

The opening of the secret entrance seemed to take an age, but Gwen kept moving backwards, keeping distance between her and Adam.

There was something happening, something he couldn't read, didn't recognize. Damn it, he couldn't wait. Gwen was backing up even as he closed in, trying to maintain some of the distance. He had to put a stop to this now.

Adam lunged forward, missing Gwen's hand but knocking the gun to the side, his other hand reaching for her throat.

Ianto weaved between Adam and Gwen. Even if there was something...wrong with Gwen and Adam had a point, there was definitely something wrong with the way he'd grabbed for her. Barring some sort of alien influence, the last thing Gwen would ever be was a threat to the team, and he'd reacted as if she posed some sort of danger.

He swivelled his head towards Gwen, who'd leapt back. "Go, Gwen. Go!" As she reacted, he held both hands up to Adam, blocking his way.

"Adam, let her go. She's confused and agitated, all right? Just...calm the fuck down."

"You're always in the way," Adam hissed, anger bubbling over. He lashed out, gripping Ianto near the curve of his shoulder.

Pain. Not his own, but everyone around him, horrible screams mixing with the rushing whir of blades and machinery, the pneumatic sounds of drills and the horrible smell of burning flesh and bone. Everyone was lost. Ianto felt cold and alone.

The steady thud of boots pressed closer, ringing dully on the floor. He tried to run away, hide in the broken rubble of the building, but his own feet disobeyed him, and he fell into step with the others. So cold.

He couldn't scream.

In one smooth motion, Adam finished pushing Ianto aside. Gwen.
