Gwen watched in horror as Adam took hold of Ianto, his face contorted with rage. She couldn't tell what was happening, but when Adam let go of Ianto he turned to her with malice shining in his eyes.

She hoped to god that Ianto was all right, but he'd bought her the time she needed. She disappeared into the tunnel, shoving the door closed behind her.

It was dim and dank inside, and she bent down, scrabbling around until she found rocks that she jammed into the crevices where door met passageway. Her hand brushed against something solid and metal embedded in the wall, and she guessed that it had be part of the door mechanism. She smashed a rock into it, wincing as she felt jagged metal cut into her left hand.

There wasn't any more she could do, and so she began to scramble up the tunnel. It was steep and uneven, but she kept up a decent speed even as her hand started to throb, wet with blood.

He roared, angered, his objective lost. He had to fix things now.

He kicked at Ianto, rolling the insensate man over on the gravel floor. He leaned down only long enough to brush his fingers against Ianto's temple, searching for the information he needed.

Then he abandoned the room, searching out the nearest terminal.

No one else was getting away.

Ianto, immobilised, heard Gwen's heels stutter a fast retreat down the exit corridor and Adam running behind her.

He lifted his head off the floor and dropped it again to the cool concrete, and winced at the stabbing pain in his side before he blacked out completely.

OOC - Continued from Now You See It --

Martha set her med kit on the ground and stood to one side of the firing range door, listening for sounds inside before she quietly turned the handle and eased the door open a crack. She held her stun gun at the ready and scanned what she could see of the dimly lit, cavernous space within. At first, it looked totally empty, no one inside and nothing out of place. But then she spotted a crumpled form on the floor on the far side of the room.

"Ianto? Ianto, can you hear me?" she called to him as she reached for the med kit and rushed inside. Ianto didn't respond, and she cursed under her breath. What had happened to him, and how long had he been like this? Did Adam know he was down? If so, why hadn't he told her so she could help him?

She reached Ianto's side and crouched next to him, opening the med kit to get her stethoscope out and pull on a pair of exam gloves as she called his name again. She was close enough now to see his chest rise and fall slightly, and her initial panic at seeing him down subsided slightly. He was alive, at least, if not conscious. She looked him over quickly--no obvious wounds or bleeding, no distorted limbs indicating broken bones. She felt his head for signs of injury and found none, so she rolled him gently onto his back. As she did, he whimpered softly and his forehead creased as if he was in pain.

"Ianto, it's me, Martha," she said soothingly. "I'm here to help you. Can you hear me now?"

"Martha?" Ianto moaned and tried to lift his head. He felt nauseated all of a sudden, and bit back the surge of bile in his throat.

He tried to sit up but could feel Martha's hand on his shoulder, urging him to move slowly, and complied when his head began to spin.

"I let her get away," he said. "I failed again. God, sorry."

Ianto flexed his hand and fingers experimentally. He saw dark spots at the edge of his vision and tried to shake them away, but grew even more confused. "Martha," he started. "It's happening again. We have to get out of here before we're... running, flames, metal ...before they kill us. It's the machines. They're coming. They're breaking out. They got Lisa and they've got Gwen and I let her get away."

He coughed again. "Adam tried to stop her. He doesn't realise." Ianto's voice rose to near-hysteria.

"Mainframe is coming for us."

Martha's relief that Ianto finally responded to her voice was short-lived. At first, he seemed alert and oriented, but then he drifted into a state of confusion and distress.

"Martha, it's happening again," he said worriedly. "We have to get out of here before we're... running, flames, metal ...before they kill us. It's the machines. They're coming. They're breaking out. They got Lisa and they've got Gwen and I let her get away."

"It's okay, Ianto, it's okay. Jack will take care of Gwen, I'm sure. And there's no flames or machines here that will get us. We're in the Hub and it's safe here. You're down in the firing range, remember?" she said, trying to calm him and get him to focus on the present and his immediate surroundings.

Ianto coughed, sounding pained. "Adam tried to stop her. He doesn't realise." His voice rose as he became more agitated. "Mainframe is coming for us."

Martha held Ianto's shoulders firmly and looked at him steadily. "It's okay, Ianto. Calm down and breathe slowly. I'm afraid you're not making sense. Mainframe can't come for us, it can't move about." Perhaps he'd hit his head when he went down after all, and she'd missed a sign of injury. But it was dark down here, and she only had basic first aid supplies with her. She needed to get him upstairs to the Medbay so she could take some scans and run a few tests on him, try to find out what happened to him.

"Do you think you can stand up and walk if I help you?" she asked, preparing to steady him as he attempted to rise to his feet. "Let's go upstairs, back into the Hub. I want to check you over, make sure you're okay, yeah? Come on, this is no place to stay if you're hurt."

"I... think I can walk," Ianto said, wincing. He raised his fingertips to his head. "But we can't go up there. Mainframe. It won't let us..."

He could tell Martha was confused, and he had difficulty finding the words to explain it all. He could see it in his mind, like pictures. Gwen running away, Adam trying to help him stop her. Why didn't Martha see what was going on?

"Martha," he said, desperate to make her understand the stakes. "I... think Mainframe infected Gwen, or -- or she's the one who programmed the virus in. I'm not sure, but it's working through her and she doesn't even realise what that means. She's out of the building and we have to get her back. She's a danger to everyone."

Ianto struggled to his feet, leaning heavily on Martha.

"I... think I can walk," Ianto said. He winced in pain and pressed his fingertips to his head. "But we can't go up there. Mainframe. It won't let us..."

"Let's see how far we can get, then," Martha suggested. "We certainly can't stay here." Ianto sounded confused, and she was worried about the apparent pain in his head. If he'd been hit hard enough, there could be serious damage that would only get worse the longer it went untreated.

Ianto looked at her with an intense and determined expression. "Martha, I... think Mainframe infected Gwen, or -- or she's the one who programmed the virus in. I'm not sure, but it's working through her and she doesn't even realise what that means. She's out of the building and we have to get her back. She's a danger to everyone."

Martha frowned as she helped Ianto stand and then got her arm around him to steady him. She'd have to come back for the med kit later, but there was nothing in it that she didn't also have upstairs in Medbay. "We can't get out to find her, Ianto, we're in lockdown. Adam says you initiated it, don't you remember doing that? What is the last thing you remember before you fell and blacked out?" She took as much of Ianto's weight as she could manage, and helped him walk to the door.

"...Adam says you initiated it, don't you remember doing that? What is the last thing you remember before you fell and blacked out?" Martha looked confused and concerned. Ianto wanted to explain but everything was a bit of a muddle.

Ianto stopped and shook his head.

"It all happened so fast. I remember Adam trying to stop Gwen, to help her. She... threatened both of us, then freaked out and ran. Talk to Adam; he saw how she was acting. Where is he?"

Ianto shook his head as if trying to clear it. "It all happened so fast. I remember Adam trying to stop Gwen, to help her. She... threatened both of us, then freaked out and ran. Talk to Adam; he saw how she was acting. Where is he?"

"He's with Tosh, I ran into them on my way here," Martha replied. Better not to tell Ianto that they were checking on Mainframe--she was sure the information would just upset him and delay their reaching Medbay. "Adam didn't mention anything about Gwen threatening you, though, and I didn't see her do that on the CCTV before it went down. He said that she'd gotten to you first and tricked you into letting her out, and that you locked down the Hub after that. Do you remember any of that?"

Martha urged him to continue walking with her as they talked. She needed to get him to Medbay as fast as she could.

"Gwen tricked me," Ianto agreed slowly. "Yes. Then of course I could have initiated- or would have- so she couldn't get back in." Ianto realised he was rambling and didn't even even sound believable to himself. "Sorry. Adam must... have it right. I must have taken quite a knock."

He didn't actually remember much of the last hour, but Adam wouldn't have lied, and Ianto remembered him being there when Gwen had got out.

Thoughts flashed through his mind again. Machinery, destroying everything, everyone. Coming for them.

He didn't appreciate the way Martha was looking at him. Her concern felt a lot like... pity. It seemed to him that some members of the team had never really seemed to trust him, especially Jack. He didn't feel like giving anyone another reason not to, but he was sure they were all in danger.

"Sorry. Adam must... have it right. I must have taken quite a knock."

"I think you did," Martha agreed. "Let's get you out of here and back upstairs so I can take a closer look at you. Head injuries are a serious matter, you know." She tried, but couldn't keep the worry out of her voice. Ianto was a loner and somewhat aloof, always keeping to himself, but he was still a member of her team and his well-being was her responsibility. Enough had gone wrong today, and she wouldn't stand for losing a teammate to a simple knock on the head if she could prevent it.

She urged Ianto along as fast as he could manage until they got to the stairs. There were enough railings and hand-holds on the way to Medbay that she wouldn't have to support him all the rest of the way, so she let Ianto rest and sit on the stairs while she returned to the firing range to retrieve her med kit. She could carry it with one hand and still be able to support Ianto if necessary. And she couldn't leave him alone to get it later if he did have a brain injury.

She found her kit where she'd left it, still open. She took her stethoscope off and replaced it inside the kit, closed it, and stood up. As she did, she noticed a bound book sitting on the table next to a box full of paper. She was pretty sure it was Ianto's book--she remembered seeing him writing in it before--so she grabbed it and then picked up the med kit. If it was his journal, she was sure he wouldn't want to lose it or leave it where anyone could find it. And it might help jog his memory about recent events if his mind was still cloudy later.

When she returned to the stairs, she found Ianto still waiting for her, resting on the steps with his head cradled in his palms. "Ready to go?" she asked as she reached out and helped him back to his feet. She shifted the book and med kit to her other hand and reached around Ianto's waist with her free arm to steady him as they took the stairs slowly up to the Hub.
