Rhys sighed as he crossed his arms and leaned against the pier. Five minutes, she'd said. He refused to look at his watch again. It'd been nearly half an hour already. Another five, and he'd call her. OOC: Gwen can meet up with Rhys here. |

The tunnel seemed to go on forever, but Gwen pushed forward, sometimes on her elbows and knees as the space contracted around her. Eventually, her head bumped into a grating and she shoved it aside, hauling herself up and out. She rolled over onto her back, catching her breath and listening for any sign that Adam was pursuing her. She couldn't hear a thing. Wincing, she sat up, examining her hand. It was covered in grime and smatterings of blood, and though she was reasonably sure that it looked worse than it really was, there was no doubt that her left hand was more or less out of action for the foreseeable future. She got to her feet, trying to orientate herself. She was in an underground carpark, which meant that tunnel went further out into Cardiff's city centre than she would have guessed. As she made her way towards the exit she began to recognise where she was - one of Cardiff's less salubrious shopping areas. She laughed - she knew full well how little security there was around here, it was something she'd being trying to put in place during her time with the police. No one had wanted to hear it, however, and so this remained a perfect place to stay under the radar. She headed out and turned herself back towards the bay - she'd need to intercept Jack, Andy and Owen before they made it back to the Hub. Then her eyes widened, as she remembered one other factor - Rhys. He was going to be waiting for her too. She broke into a run as a dozen terrible scenarios began to run through her head. It took her ten minutes of flat out running punctuated by hurtling through traffic, but eventually she made her way back to the pier where she'd left Rhys. There he was, standing with arms crossed, looking impatient and annoyed and bizarrely normal. Gwen caught herself and slowed to a walking pace, not wanting to alarm him. She'd need to get him out of the way as quickly as possible. She walked up to him, trying on a smile. |

There she was. Rhys straightened as he caught sight of Gwen at last. "I was starting to get worried," he said, trying to make it sound like a joke. "Wouldn't want to have to call the police looking for you." He reached out to pull her closer, and as he did, he noticed a smudge of something dark high up against her temple. "Oi, what's this?" He rubbed his thumb against it. Dirt. "You're still on vacation 'til tomorrow. Jack forget that?" He felt the edges of his good mood crumble. |

Gwen laughed incredulously, but she let herself be tugged into Rhys's touch. A part of her wanted to bury herself in his shoulder and ask him for help, as though there was anything he could do. No, her priority had to be keeping him safe - that was always the most important thing, the deal she had struck with herself when she first joined up to Torchwood, all that time ago. "Oh," she said lightly, rubbing at the offending area and careful to keep her injured hand out of sight. "About that. Turns out it's a bit of a disaster zone at work - half the team's down with the flu, it's a right mess. I think I'd better stay here, just for a couple of hours, help get things sorted out, otherwise I'm never going to catch up on all the work I missed while I was away." She smiled, apologetic. "Listen, sweetheart, why don't you go and do a food run while I'm out of your hair - I'll be back in no time, I promise." She hated the way the lies slipped so easily from her tongue, but what she hated even more was that she didn't have a choice. |

"Oh, so is it the other half of your team this time, or the same as the last? You know, Gwen, I --" He reached down to grab her other hand, and was shocked to find it covered in blood. "What the hell?!" She had a gash across her palm, still oozing fresh blood. "How'd you get this?" He looked at her. She was looking away. "Tell me, Gwen." |

"Give it a rest --" Gwen started, but then Rhys was holding up her hand and staring at it. She bit her lip, unable to meet his eye. "Nothing, it's nothing," she said. "Tripped over my own two feet." There was too much, her head was swimming with it all. Images of Ianto slumped on the floor, Tosh turning against her and Jack completely out of the picture, with this stalking, malevolent figure in the centre of it all, and now Rhys's disappointed face sending a wave of fresh anxiety and misery through her. |

"I can tell you're lying." He scoffed. "What, you're not even officially back at work and already it's secrets all over the place. Tell me what's going on." |

"Oh for the love of -- do you think I enjoy keeping things from you, hm?" Gwen snapped. "I bet you never think, do you, that maybe I don't talk about my job for a reason, because of things like national security and because I know things you wouldn't believe, things that could get you killed! But no, you think I'm just sitting on the details of my top secret job to piss you off." She broke off suddenly, her breath coming quickly. |

"It scares the hell out of me, Gwen! It scares me that you have to keep all these secrets, that there's nothing you think you can share. It scares me that whatever the hell it is you deal with is big enough to scare you, that you don't think I can handle it. That I can't help." He paused. "Let me help." |

Gwen bit her lip, swallowing the sob that was rising in her throat. "It's my job, there's nothing you can -- I can't --" Her words dried up and she gestured uselessly with her hand, lost for ways to make Rhys understand. She caught onto his jacket and curled her fingers into the fabric, clinging. "I need to find Jack," she whispered to his shoulder. |

Gwen looked miserable, and his resistance faltered. He wrapped his arms around her, wishing he really could block out all the bad things from her job, easy as this. Rhys sighed, and kissed the top of her head. "OK. We'll find Jack." He pulled back just a fraction. "And I said 'we.' I'm not letting you alone on this. No arguing." |

Gwen laughed, resigned. "You can drive me, then." If they'd been after a Hraxxon, then the others might still be in Roath Park. It was worth a shot, at any rate - somewhere away from Adam's influence might be enough to get the situation back under control. |

Her laugh only made him feel a slight bit better, but at least she wasn't pushing him further away. "Right then. First stop, though, is doing something about that hand." He gave her a final squeeze, then nudged her in the direction of the car. If there wasn't something in the first aid kit, he'd stop off at a chemist's. |

Gwen was about to protest - they really didn't have time - but then a fresh round of pain shot across her palm and she nodded her assent. She walked back to the car as quickly as she could. The sooner she was reunited with at least some of her team, away from Adam, the better. |

The first aid kit under the passenger seat was a bit better stocked than he remembered it being. Rhys gave Gwen a curious look, but didn't say anything, just helped her clean and bandage the cut. She was pulling herself together again, he could practically see it. She always liked having a firm goal in mind. "Ready?" he asked. "Where to, then?" OOC: I'm ready to head to the park! |

Gwen flexed her hand, feeling better just for the sight of clean bandages replacing dirt and blood. "Roath Park," she said. "Let's hope we get there in time." continued in Cardiff Master Gardner Program Edited by Gwen Cooper, Oct 12 2009, 12:44 PM.
