OOC - Continued from The Hub -> Lower Levels -> Other Areas -> Trigger Point Martha went down the stairs into the Medbay ahead of Ianto in case he stumbled. His gait had gotten steadier as they moved across the Hub and he hadn't been holding onto the railings quite as much, but she wasn't prepared to take any chances until she'd done a thorough set of scans. She set the med kit down on a table at the bottom of the stairs and placed Ianto's journal next to it, and then guided him to the examination table. "Take off your jacket, and then lie down here," she told Ianto as she reached for a blanket to use as a makeshift pillow. She helped him up and supported his head as he reclined onto the table. "Let me know if you're cold and I'll get you a blanket to cover up with." She pulled the cart with the body scanner over to the side of the table and reset it before placing Ianto's hand on the scanning surface. A moment later, a blue outline of Ianto's body appeared on the wall in front of her, along with readings of his vital signs and other indications. His heart rate was slightly elevated, and there were high levels of adrenalin and cortisol in his system, both signs of stress and fear. However, there was no sign of internal bleeding or head injury, although there appeared to be an injury to his ribcage. When Ianto hissed in pain as she gently palpated the area, she had him open his shirt so she could take a look at it. She frowned when she saw the large purple bruise on his side. It was warm to the touch and slightly inflamed. "When did this happen?" she asked him. "I don't see how you could have hurt yourself this way from falling in the firing range. Usually people don't get knocked around enough to cause bruising like this unless they've been Weevil hunting." She reached for the tissue regenerator. At least this injury would be easy to take care of. Edited by Martha Jones, Oct 27 2009, 09:42 AM.

Ianto flinched when Martha pressed her hand against his side, and when he lifted his head to survey the tender spot once his shirt was off, he shut his eyes at the sight. "God, that really hurts," he said. He remembered nothing about how he'd been injured. "I don't know what happened. I must have got that in the fall." He turned his head to look up at the scan screen still projected onto the wall. "Am I all right otherwise? I need to... I've got things to do." Ianto pulled his shirt closed and tried to sit up on the table, but winced at the pain in his ribcage and lay back again. "Maybe a paracetamol. Or if you've got something stronger, I'd appreciate it." |

"God, that really hurts," Ianto said as he tried to view his injury. "I don't know what happened. I must have got that in the fall." "Not very likely," she told him. "It's too small an area to have been caused by the fall, and there's no other sign of trauma on that side. I'd expect to at least see some bruising on your hip and perhaps your shoulder as well, but I don't. It looks more like someone or something hit you there. If you'd fallen onto a fist-sized rock, it might cause damage like this, but you fell onto a clear, flat surface." "Am I all right otherwise? I need to... I've got things to do." He tried to sit up then, but he winced in pain from the effort and lay back on the table. "Maybe a paracetamol. Or if you've got something stronger, I'd appreciate it." "You can do them later, Ianto. Sorry, but it's too soon to tell if that's all that's wrong. That's just a first-level scan that gives basic information," she said, pointing at the image on the wall. "You're also showing some symptoms of a head injury from the fall, and I need to do a more detailed examination to rule out any sort of brain damage. It won't take very long, and it won't hurt, I promise. Once I'm done with that, I'll use the tissue regenerator to take care of your mystery injury, and then we can talk about whether you're fit to return to duty." |

Ianto swallowed and nodded. "That's... fine, Martha. Do what you have to." "It looks more like someone or something hit you there. If you'd fallen onto a fist-sized rock, it might cause damage like this, but you fell onto a clear, flat surface." It certainly felt as if he'd been punched or karate-kicked in the side. It was too bad the CCTV wasn't running in the target range, as far as Ianto knew. He wished he could tell Martha exactly what had gone down, but conflicting pictures had given him a confusing picture. |

Martha was relieved that Ianto took the potential danger of his situation seriously. She had expected more resistance from him, especially considering the erratic behavior that Adam had reported as well as his mental state when she had found him. But he simply nodded and told her to do what she needed to. She searched through the cabinets until she found one of the Bekaran deep-tissue scanners. She turned it on and waited until it indicated that it had connected to Mainframe and that the computer was recording the scanner's output. "You can close your eyes and relax," she told Ianto as she adjusted the alien device. "This will only take a moment." She held the Bekaran scanner steady and made several passes over Ianto's head, taking progressively deeper scans and viewing the results in the scanner's small display window. There was no sign of physical trauma to Ianto's head or neck that would explain his altered mental state and memory lapses. There was definitely heightened activity in the hippocampus and amygdala, two areas of the brain that are involved in processing memories and emotions, particularly fear. His adrenalin and cortisol levels had begun to drop as Ianto relaxed, but the affected portions of his brain continued to show higher levels of activity than normal. Having run a complete series of scans, Martha turned off the device and stowed it away. Then she set Mainframe to analyse the data and compare it to Ianto's previous scans on file. She was surprised when Mainframe asked her to choose whose scans to compare the new ones with. Even more surprising was that Adam's name wasn't on the list of records to choose from. But the computer also should have recognised Ianto's brain scans immediately and not needed to run the search. Was a glitch in Mainframe to blame, or was it something else? Finally, after a longer than usual delay, Mainframe displayed both of Ianto's brain scans and highlighted the differences between them. Martha frowned as she took in the information shown on the display. "Well, there's good news and strange news," she announced. "Which do you want first?" |

Ianto forced calm as Martha worked the scanner. He let his thoughts drift back to the range, trying to piece things together. Flickers of light. The oscillating fan on the corner of his desk at Torchwood One, always constant, suddenly slowing and stopping -- 'power must have gone out, check the system' and the windows were stuck. Flames. Machines, ohgodrun, the screech of metal on metal. He dug his fingertips into his thighs as he tried to remain motionless. He opened his eyes again when he heard Martha's voice, and remembered where he was. "Well, there's good news and strange news," she announced. "Which do you want first?" "Let's get the strange bit out of the way," Ianto said, as he shook his head in an effort to clear his mind. He pushed against the surface of the exam table and felt the deep ache in his ribs as he sat up and swung his legs over the side. "Save the good news for last." |

Ianto sat up on the exam table slowly, obviously still in pain. Martha moved to stand in front of him and prevent him from getting off the table. She still needed to use the tissue regenerator on his other mysterious injury, and if he could be persuaded to cooperate, she wanted to run some more tests before she let him leave. "Well, the strange news is that something appears to have altered your brain patterns and neural pathways in the structures of the limbic system that are involved with emotions and memory processing," she told him. "Now, some of this is similar to the long-term effects of emotional trauma, but that doesn't explain most of what I see in these scans. Brains don't just do this on their own. There's no evidence of physical head trauma, no damage to the surrounding areas of the brain, no viruses or other organic agents detected, no traces of unusual energy signatures or radiation... nothing known to cause anything like this. Yet there have been significant changes in your brain since the last time a brain scan was recorded. The question is, how did it happen?" She smiled at him reassuringly. "The good news is that there's no other damage or brain changes that I can find, and that the effects of these changes should be minimal with regards to your ability to function day to day. I'd like to run some more tests, but that can wait until I'm finished with the tissue regenerator." Martha reached for the device and activated it. "Just relax, and let this thing do its job." She set the tissue regenerator to work on the bruised and tender flesh over Ianto's ribs, and moments later, the dark blotches began to fade away. |

Ianto dialled his expression to neutral at Martha's diagnosis, then closed his eyes as she ran the device over his injured flesh. "...no evidence of physical head trauma... no viruses or ...unusual energy signatures or radiation... there have been significant changes in your brain since the last time a brain scan was recorded. " This was fantastic. Something was very wrong with him. Very wrong. With his brain. Jesus. "The question is, how did it happen?" Ianto wished he knew. But he expected to face even more disbelief and distrust from the team once Jack heard about his. |

Once she finished with the tissue regenerator, Martha lightly palpated the area. It might still be tender for a while, but according to the scanner, the damage to Ianto's ribcage had been thoroughly healed. She wished the changes to his brain scans could be fixed as easily. Still, there was no reason to believe that he wouldn't recover from whatever had caused it--the human brain is remarkably adaptable, and the extent and full effects of the changes were still unknown. Time to look into that a bit while Ianto was still willing to wait and rest in Medbay. "Ianto, I barely saw you today before I found you downstairs, so I don't know what you've been doing up until then. Talk me through your day, starting with waking up, or as early in the day as you can recall." |

Ianto reached back into the recent past. "Well, I woke up. I was running a bit late so I skipped breakfast. I went to pick up the dry-cleaning on the way in -- this is boring, should I skip bits?" He saw Martha start to nod, then quickly shake her head. She smiled and gestured at him to go on. He paused. "They had all of the stuff from the incident with the er... oily, squirty... thing the other day. It's strange, now that I think of it. They didn't give me Adam's jacket and trousers, and he got the worst of it, didn't he? I'll ring them later." He continued: "I stopped at the cashpoint and pulled out 50 quid for...I don't remember what. "Then I came in, and you were all in the conference room. I made coffee and Jack, Owen and Andy headed out to the field, and you, Tosh and Adam went to work on, I don't know, researching something. I think I... started working on inventory for some inbound equipment -- Owen ordered too much of something, again." Ianto stopped. There were flashes. Mainframe. Running. The gun range. The smell of smoke, or was it gunpowder? No. Rolls of target sheets. Gwen was so scared, he could sense it. Adam was angry. No, concerned. Have to help Gwen. No. Stop her. Mainframe. Out of control. Falling. Pain. We have to get out, but it's too late for me. He shook his head. Everything was a jumble, or conflicted. It just didn't make sense. "It's... confused after that." Martha looked concerned, so he followed up quickly: "But I didn't play with any alien tech, so I'm sure it's just lack of sleep or something." Ianto stood, gingerly. "I'll be all right. Seriously." The last thing he wanted was for everyone to assume he'd gone off the deep end. Just then, everything went pitch-black and silent. Power outage. It was easy to forget that there was always sort of a dull, reassuring hum in the Hub. "Martha?" Ianto asked, as the dim emergency lighting flickered on, bathing her profile in a faint red glow. Power outage? Power was controlled by Mainframe. |

Martha listened carefully to Ianto's recounting of his day, noting the places where his memory seemed uncertain. For anyone else it would be an acceptable account, but she'd known Ianto long enough to know that he had a better head for details than most people. She was concerned about what he'd told her, and that the gaps in his recall had become more frequent as the day went on. She was about to respond to his attempts to assure her that he would be fine when the power went out. She sighed deeply and rolled her eyes at the inconvenient timing of the outage. Then she heard the nearly panicked tone in Ianto's voice when he spoke her name as the emergency lighting came on. "I'm right here, Ianto. I'm sure it's nothing to worry about," she said soothingly. "Jack will be back soon with the others and he'll get this sorted. Let's find a couple of torches and see if we can help get things back up and running." |

crossposted from 'not my beautiful house' - drop it in wherever it fits for you two He fumbled past Adam's frequency ... not Tosh then ... "Martha," he signaled her. "I need a status report from you." Bright - I'm assuming Jack's comm can hit both her cell phone and/or her comm even with the power drain in the Hub. |

Martha had ushered Ianto back upstairs and into the Hub when she heard the ringtone she'd assigned to Jack's calls. She ran over to her workstation and found her mobile, answering it just before it went to voice mail. "Martha, I need a status report from you," Jack said, wasting no time on formalities. "Well, the Hub's in lockdown and the power's just gone out, but the emergency systems have come online. Tosh and Adam are downstairs looking into the Mainframe glitches we've been having lately, and Ianto's up here with me," she replied. "It's turned out to be quite an exciting day. How are you lot doing with the Hraxxon cleanup?" |

OOC - Cross-posted from This is not my beautiful house "Gwen stopped by to tell me that she'd escaped some sort of hostile alien in the Hub, masquerading as Adam," Jack replied. "What's Tosh said about the power issue? Have you checked the Rift monitor – is it Rift related? Are you secure?" "Yeah, Gwen was here earlier," Martha replied. "Came into the Hub, saw Adam, and didn't remember him at all. I can see why she thought he was hostile--he kept pushing her and she was having none of it. I'll give you a full report later, there's not enough time for it now. I haven't heard from Tosh since she and Adam went to check on Mainframe after Gwen left. We'll try to raise her on comms now." Martha caught Ianto's eye and mouthed "Call Tosh" at him before returning her attention to Jack's other questions. "There hasn't been any Rift activity recorded recently as far as I can tell, so it seems unlikely that any of this is Rift-related. And we're as secure as we can be in lockdown," she said. There was a pause and some noise on Jack's end of the line--muffled voices and what sounded like doors closing. That must be Andy and Owen and Gwen joining Jack in the SUV. While she waited for Jack to get back to her, she tried to get back into her abandoned Mainframe session with no luck. The terminal wasn't accepting input, and the usual slow dance of Mainframe's background display was now a frenzy of agitated action. She'd never seen the display look like that before, and it made her wonder if Ianto was right about there being something wrong with Mainframe. Finally, Jack spoke to her again. "Get yourselves armed, and get in a secure location," he ordered her. "We're heading back in. Something is wrong and I'm going to find out what." "Right. I'll call you straightaway if anything else happens here. See you soon," she signed off. "Ianto, Jack wants us armed and waiting in a secure location. They're all coming back now," she said, heading towards the armoury. "Did you have any luck contacting Tosh?" |

"Ianto, Jack wants us armed and waiting in a secure location. They're all coming back now," she said, heading towards the armoury. "Did you have any luck contacting Tosh?" "None at all." He punched the off button on his mobile and pocketed it. "Her line's gone straight to voicemail. And that's odd in itself; she always answers, even when someone rings her in the middle of the night." He followed Martha into the armoury. Passing one of the CCTV cameras in the hallway, Ianto noted a disconcerting feeling of being... observed. All of the footage was fed into Mainframe, but he wasn't certain if that was the case now, with the power reduction and lockdown. He lowered his voice. "Martha, why does Jack want us to arm up? Did he say there was a threat from outside the Hub?" |

"He didn't say directly, but he's sure something's wrong here, and I can't say I disagree even though I don't know what's going on," Martha replied as they reached for weapons and ammunition. Martha took one of the stun guns out of habit, but also grabbed a service revolver. Jack would never forgive her if she got hurt or endangered because she was improperly armed. "Even Adam's been acting strangely, and he's usually the steadiest of us all." Thinking of Adam reminded her of the incident with the CCTV footage earlier, and she decided to ask Ianto about it. "Ianto, what do you remember about Andy and Owen's behaviour when you first returned from 1925? Were they always as close as they are now?" |
