Andy passed Jack's news on to the others on his way to the boardroom. Tosh was, thank goodness, willing to accept their pizza order when it arrived. Beyond that, though, they didn't really say much. He brought his drink with him and sat down on the far side of the table in his usual seat, then swore under his breath when he realized he had to adjust for height. After that he drank and waited in silence. He hoped Owen was alright. Of all of them, Owen was taking the whole thing hardest. Poor bastard. Then again, he was skating by on the idea that the whole thing was temporary. His mother would lose it. Oh god. |

"Even pizza isn't bringing everyone to the yard?" Jack said when he came to the boardroom and only Andy was there. Jack slumped into his chair – not as comfortable as it should be and flipped through the boxes until he found the black olives and meat combo. "Okay," he pushed a notepad and pen across to Andy. "List off who expects to hear from you and how long they can be put off." Of them all, Andy was the one most likely to still have a life outside work. Even Rhys was used to Gwen putting him off by now - or so Jack assumed. He didn't hear about it, anyway and he did try and send Gwen home when he could. It just wasn't as often as Gwen might like. |

Ianto passed by the boardroom door, then backed up at the sight of white pizza boxes and the scent of dinner. "That smells fantastic." He opened one of the boxes and found his favourite. "Yes," he hissed joyfully as Andy tapped a pen against the boardroom table. A glance at his sheet revealed a list -- starting off with Andy's mum. "What's- oh," Ianto took another slice of pizza and chewed thoughtfully before putting it down and wiping his fingers on a crumpled napkin. He pulled over a laptop and started typing and searching. "Regional Law Enforcement Conference kicks off in Bristol tomorrow," he said. "Maybe Andy and Gwen could arrange to be away for that, last-minute thing?" He picked up the sausage and pepper slice and took a bite of crust. "Buys Tosh a few more days if she needs it to figure this out." |

"Even pizza isn't bringing everyone to the yard?" Andy looked up at Jack's arrival and offered a weak half-smile. "Tragically, no. Also, my shake is clearly inferior. I'd ask for re-training, but you'd dock my pay." Jack's order to make a list didn't surprise him. He'd already been thinking the problem through on his own. "I'm guessing you want known, regular contacts and incidental contacts. Right." There was his mother, and of course his father, though when one of them called it was usually his mam with him in the background. There was the rental company, who were going to be doing some work soon. Ben downstairs tended to accept packages for other people in the building. Oh, and Trav... Ianto joined them while Andy worked and immediately started trying to help. "Regional Law Enforcement Conference kicks off in Bristol tomorrow. Maybe Andy and Gwen could arrange to be away for that, last-minute thing? Buys Tosh a few more days if she needs it to figure this out." "Sure, except that some of us actually know people who are planning on going." He'd kept closer ties with some of his police mates than Gwen had. "Though I guess more than one cover story never hurt anyone. Well, except for the ones who get found out." He slid the list over to Jack. "Mam I can put off with e-mail if I have to, though it's unusual to go more than a week without a proper call. Everyone else we should be alright." And really, of all the people in his life, his mother was the last person he wanted to see him like this. |

Jack licked pizza sauce off his thumb thoughtfully, reaching for Andy's list. "Regional Law Enforcement Conference kicks off in Bristol tomorrow. Maybe Andy and Gwen could arrange to be away for that, last-minute thing? Buys Tosh a few more days if she needs it to figure this out." "Could work," he said, "though Gwen is pretty good at lying to Rhys, hopefully she's got him sorted already. We'll use Bristol for the two of you and come up with a back-up if anyone asks." "The rest of us ... there's no one who'll wonder," it didn't occur to Jack that it might sound a little ... sad, at least to people who had outside lives, who hadn't worked for Torchwood long. Jack leaned back, sprawling in his chair as usual, taking up space and attention. "I've got a conference call with the Russians in ... oh, in awhile but they'll just have to deal," Jack looked a little sour for a moment, because if Torchwood had a savage reputation, the Gorizont-MO was the sort of group that gave killers nightmares. Then he brightened a bit, glanced down and gave an experimental wiggle. "I wonder if I can dazzle them with cleavage," he speculated. "They're always going on about big tits - how many tits whatever alien they've caught has, how big ... " he snorted. "Can't they use the internet like the rest of us?" "But I bet I can get them nodding and smiling in twenty minutes with these," he said and gave both Ianto and Andy a self-satisfied grin. bring your characters in, if you're around, you can double up threads if you're also in a thread elsewhere Edited by Captain Jack Harkness, Dec 21 2009, 09:53 PM.

Owen made his way up to the boardroom slowly. He didn't really see what there was to discuss if Tosh was still going to fix this. If this wasn't fixable -- he didn't want to think about that until there were no other options. But on the other hand, the boardroom was where the liquor was. Upon entering he made a beeline for the sideboard, pouring himself a larger glass of gin than was probably wise, but he figured the situation made up for it. He slid into an empty chair. From the tail end of the discussion it was obvious what they'd been discussing. Owen mentally dismissed it. He had -- well, technically there was his mother, but he talked to her once a year, if that, and it wasn't ever in person. He doubted she'd even notice the difference. He knocked back half of his glass. "How long are we going to have to keep this up, Jack?" He was trying not to think about what he'd learned about the man. It just seemed so ... out of place. "You said this was a toy, a game." He waved his hand to indicate his meaning. "Well it's not funny, and if someone ends up in hospital, with no records and me with suddenly no standing, it's going to be even less fucking funny than it is already." |

Gwen walked it at the tail end of Owen's griping. "Everything's going to be fine, though, isn't it?" she asked, grabbing a glass of whiskey then taking a seat next to Andy. |

Martha came into the boardroom as Gwen was sitting down at the table. The smell of the pizza hit her as she closed the door behind her, and she strode over to the pizza boxes to see what was available, not that she felt too particular about the toppings selection just now. After a quick look through the boxes, she grabbed two slices of pepperoni and mushroom and slid them onto a plate. She eyed the whiskey speculatively, but decided that pizza really required beer. A quick look in the small refrigerator turned up four bottles of Brains SA Gold, and she took one with her to the table. She looked around the table at the others, in a considerably better mood than she'd been in for the past several hours. She was finally clean, dry, wearing clothing that fit (even if she was padding around in socks), and was about to get her dinner. She could handle the rest of the picture much easier under these conditions. |

Andy picked the mushrooms off his pizza and ate them with his fingers. "Yep," he said, not really looking up at anybody. "Fine. Perfectly fine. Preferably before three and a half weeks have passed." With that horrible thought out in the open, he poured himself a bit more whiskey than he typically would. Sometimes, he hated his brain. |

"What makes you think that?" Owen sniped. "As far as your body's concerned, you've always been a woman. Not going to start the clock from today." He finished the rest of his drink, wishing for more. |

Andy went pale but mustered up the best scowl he could manage. "Yeah, well, since I haven't been one before, it had damn well better take its time." He downed the rest of his drink, choked a little, and pinched the bridge of his nose. This was beyond not-okay. Edited by Andy Davidson, Dec 25 2009, 07:30 AM.

"We'll figure it out," Jack promised them all. He would, one way or another. Though, and his glance flicked to Owen, he might have to prioritize. It took him a moment to realize what Owen and Andy were going on about and Jack frowned, trying to recall what the current status of hormonal medication was in this day and age. "If it's an issue," he said, glancing over at Owen, "we can always start on hormonal cycle that will short circuit the normal one." And avoid pregnancy, which, looking around at the hunched shoulders and lowered gazes, didn't seem a likely risk. "Anyway," Jack waved away those problems and pulled the key from his pocket to toss it with a clatter onto the table. "Problem is that," he jerked his chin at it. "It's broken." "I think it's a power issue," Jack started, "but Tosh think's the sensors aren't picking whatever tag it uses to register and respond to targets that have been modified by the Party Favor -" Jack went on for a few moments about sub-molecular particles and the energy potential in electron bonds before catching himself with the realization that no one else sitting at the table now really cared. "Okay," Jack ran a hand through his hair, tugging on the finer strands. "Right, see the problem with Party Favors is the tech ... it's so advanced, so far beyond what we're able to do that it's, well, you know the saying -" he shrugged. "No one's figured out how they do what they do when they're working, let alone how to troubleshoot one when it's busted." |

"If it's an issue," Jack said, "we can always start on hormonal cycle that will short circuit the normal one." Owen nodded uneasily. Hormone levels had been covered by the scans, but he hadn't thought to actually check that. At least he wouldn't have to re-run the scans. It was bad enough thinking about it. He reached for a slice of pizza, intent on ignoring it for the moment. Jack's convoluted explanation of how the damn piece of equipment was broken left him feeling unsteady, and he stopped after half a slice. "Look, can you fix it or not? You keep saying you can, but then you keep saying it's broken worse than you thought. You don't actually even know, do you? It's so advanced even you don't know how it works, and you're hoping that means it's advanced enough to be unbreakable." |

Andy stared at the key as Owen spoke. He wanted to believe Jack when he said they would find a way to reverse the process, but Owen had pointed out the hole in Jack's logic so effectively that he wavered before he dug in his heels. "We handle stuff that's beyond us all the time," Andy said. "I'll take dumb luck just as easy as I'll take expertise. If all we've got is monkeys at typewriters, well then clickity-click." |

"It's so advanced even you don't know how it works, and you're hoping that means it's advanced enough to be unbreakable." "No one knows," Jack said defensively. "Not really. Not even ..." he paused and made a vague 'out there' gesture. "But they're not harmful they're ... they're entertainment." "We handle stuff that's beyond us all the time," Andy said. "I'll take dumb luck just as easy as I'll take expertise. If all we've got is monkeys at typewriters, well then clickity-click." "Right, and anyway -" Jack changed tack quickly. "We've got other options." He dragged over the mainframe remote, activating the system to pull up some of Gwen's work. "Here." It wasn't some fancy technology, or data from the archives that he pulled up, it was a convention schedule, prominent among it being 'Private Event'. Kincheloe Auction and Estate Sale 2010 "They were pretty easy to find this year," Jack said, leaning back with a smug grin. "And I think one of their items is a brigid's egg." |

"A brigid's what?" Andy asked. He wasn't sure he liked the idea of a private auction. It sounded uncomfortably swanky. After a second, though, his eyes went wide. Oh. No way. "Jack, if you're about to suggest that someone goes to this thing because we're suddenly painfully incognito..." |

Owen's eyes widened, momentarily distracted by Jack's words. "You're sure it's a brigid's egg and not just some crap modern art? Where is it?" Torchwood One had had one, but they hadn't even let other departments near it, let alone Torchwood Three. His mind was already racing through the possibilities when Andy interrupted. "Jack, if you're about to suggest that someone goes to this thing because we're suddenly painfully incognito..." "I'd go if I were dead," Owen cut him off. He thought briefly about the brigid's egg being able to fix their current dilemma, but if the 'party favor' had rewritten their DNA, it was unlikely, and too much of a waste of the egg to test. |

"Jack, if you're about to suggest that someone goes to this thing because we're suddenly painfully incognito..." "Hah!" Jack grinned at Andy. "You're a genius!" "I'd go if I were dead," Owen said with unexpected job dedication. "Yup, and if you were dead, I'd thaw you out and send you." Jack leaned forward, fishing for another piece of pizza. "We're always playing spy games with the civilian scavengers – they know who most of us are, they know most of UNITs retrieval specialists – Torchwood-One had a rotating team to try and get into their facilities and get the goods before someone stupid got their hands on them." We can monitor them, most of the time, and we take turns with UNIT on trying to get in – it's our turn, by the way," Jack looked very pleased. "Usually, it isn't a big deal, they pick up space crap and forgeries and junk but this – " Jack pulled up an image from the catalogue Ianto had intercepted from the Royal Mail, ala James Bond. "This is not junk - it's probably the most significant find we'll have in a decade. Even if it's not working, we want to get our hands on it." He looked around the table, frowning. "Tosh will keep on working on the key but we can't take time off just because of this. None of us are injured, we're not impaired and looking so different does give us an advantage in this particular case."

Martha had no idea what a brigid's egg was, and she wondered why Jack would be so interested in a private auction until he mentioned the scavengers. She'd heard of them when she was still working with UNIT. She'd been told that she might be tapped for a retrieval job at some point because she was a new recruit but had significant personal knowledge of aliens. However, she was kept busy on the Valiant examining records and artifacts from The Year and was never transferred from that project until she came to work for Torchwood. She looked at the photograph that Jack displayed from the auction catalog with curiosity. "It does look a bit like that sculpture in Chicago," she said. "But what does it do?" |

Andy opened his mouth to protest, but closed it when Owen started showing an interest. Anything that had him that excited was a big deal. Plus, it did look sort of cool. Maybe Jack was right about this being an opportunity they should take. He ate his food and listened. |
