i am very happy about the resource protection that u3d has(i haven't tested it yet) because, i was bored, and i was thinking that if i turned my game into an mmo, then people could edit my models to make level game mods and stuff.

(i am quite bored so please respond)

That could be a good success... people do like the ability to make their own levels in a game, especially if it is well-known and easy to use. It would be a bit of a challenge to make it user-friendly for the general public. :)

what exactly are you talking about? a level editor?
that would be good, like saphire tears or something.

There already are mmos with this concept, e.g "Second Life". Generally, I think the concept sucks because I don't like the idea of leting just anybody cluttering my game worlds with ugly models and textures.

yeah, thats why resource protection is good, but level editors can be fun if the level is made up of just blocks(sapphire tears) but if its a model i wouldn't do it.

I agree with Despellanion, in that if you make an open source game you're risking lowering the quality of it. But if you somehow make a method to filter out crappy content, people could start submitting quality stuff. It's a double-edged sword.

I was thinking simpler things, like "Sapphire tears" apparently. You could just give them a template of set objects, and they could build fun levels from those. :cow:

yeah there are a lot of console games like that, where you choose inside or outside, if inside you get objects like wall, floor, ceiling, and window, and if its outside you get a terrain editor.(i think time splitters has that)

ive played some good games like that.

but people would still mess it up and make it ugly.

Yeah. If you want to maintain a definite level of quality, open-source probably wouldn't be an option. :P

but look at Linux it was open source and now it rivals with windows but i guess the programmers knew what they were doing

also CS you can edit it and their quite open about moding, in fact they help moders

yes you could loose quality but if people could choose what stuff they have it could be the opposite
