well, as a few of you know my graphics card is the technological equivalent to dog poo, so i'm getting a new one. I have looked everywhere to learn as much as I can about the cards available and which ones i can use on my computer.

I have an on-board graphics thing, which is probably why it sucks. but anyways, i have an AGP 8x port thing so apparently i can use a good card. i've been looking around and here are the ones i like:

Radeon X1950 XT -~$260

Radeon X1950 pro-~$190

I know that there are only 2 of them but i like these lol
so what do you think, should i get one of these or a different one?

I have a Radeon X1950 XT and with this card i can run most games at maximum quality (like far cry, tomb raider anniversary, doom3, half life 2,...) i think it is a good choice, but my advice to you is to buy a card that supports directx 10, this is the future of games.
Edit: if you want to use those cards you need a PCI express slot! By now all the good GPUs have it, so i think you need to change your motherboard.
Sorry if i've made some errors, I'm not english!

yeah, but isn't directx 10 a vista exclusive? if it is, i'll just wait a while and get a new computer with vista and dx10 already on it, i'd rather not mess something up in my computer trying to switch from xp to vista lol

Yes, directx10 are only for vista.
p.s: i suggest you, if in the future you want to pass to vista, to have also windows XP installed in a partition, expecially if you want to play at old games!

You really should buy a DirectX 10 compatible graphics device if you want to spend more than 100€! It would be simply a waste of money, not to invest this money into a DX 10 compatible graphics device now, even if you don't intend to buy Vista during the next year. Most DX 10 cards, now available have a DX 9 performance that's about as high as the performance of pure DX 9 cards with a similar price, but you get something in addition (namely DX 10 support, which is such great). DirectX 10 graphics devices use a unified shader pipeline. This means that every DX 10 compatible graphics device can do the same things with the only difference, that some can do it faster. So as a nice side effect of this every DX 10 card, supports all DX 9 features (and all DX 10 features).

I wouldn't recommend choosing a Radeon-card.

ok, i have a limit of around $200 for this graphics card, which should be enough to get something good but not overkill.

i spent $350 AU on a 7550gt and i would only call the card decent, graphics cards a very expensive and you get what you pay for

l dont like ATI or Radeon

i prefer nvidia, ASUS or leadtec

if u want to save $300 to put into the card, make it yourself and DON'T BUY DELL

1)buy the parts and DON'T BUY A CRAPPY POWER SUPPLY it will slowly eat away at EVERYTHING (i have had over $400 AU on replacements parts because of one psu, then $200 AU on a good psu)

// Cooling (most under do it, you cant over do it I've seen -100c on load)

2) install the parts into the case and BE CAREFUL

3)install the os (its best to start with a new install of windows as it doesn't adjust to new hardware well)

p.s. im avoiding vista for as long as possible (or until i have money) GO LINUX

well my computer has some weird 'technology assimilation' thing; some things i add to the computer will start working immediately as soon as they are attached lol, keyboards mouse, speakers, anything and i'll have to assume that a graphics card will do the same.

i see you went with the hands on approach lol that sound like it would work, i would certainly know what is going on in my computer lol i might have to work on collecting computer parts to make something like that...

sadly though, i can't gut this computer, at least not until i get another $1200 computer...

so i'm stuck with replacing the graphics card in this one.
