Why can't 3ds MAX open 3ds files...WTF! Jus when I; thought geekdom couldnt get any lamer...

I am seriously reconsidering abandoning my geek merits...I just learned that "3ds MAX 7" cannot load "3ds" files? WTF

You should really lighten up, man :D! Maybe practice some yoga :P.

But to (en)lighten your spirit, the reason you can't open *.3ds is probably because you're trying to open them directly, instead of importing them ;).
From the manual:
3ds Max Reference
 
Procedure

To import a file:

1) Choose File menu > Import.

2) Choose an import file type from the Files Of Type list in the file selector dialog. To see more than one file type at a time, choose the All Files file type.

3) Select a file to import.

4) For some file types, a second dialog appears, with options specific to that file type. Choose the import options you want.


If that doesn't work, you can always try to drag the *.3ds file over a viewport to load it.

Hopefully this will rid you of some of that frustration ;).

3d studio MAX only opens .max files, and as MyseriXYZ said: you have to import the other formats like in your case; the .3ds-file format.
