In your opinion what was the most believable extraterrestrial in a Hollywood movie? Please don't mention microbes. Scientists keep talking about how if we find life on another planet it will most likely be microbial. Its not that wouldn't be interesting at all, its just that multi cellular life has far more personality. For that reason it is a bit more interesting. In your opinion what was the most plausible multicellular alien creature you saw in a Hollywood movie? By plausible I mean, could be a real creature, and looks like it could be something that didn't evolve on Earth. In other words it isn't related to life here, or its common ancestor with life on Earth was a microbe. Does this creature obey the laws of chemistry and physics? Also, just as important, does it obey the laws of evolution, and natural selection? Does its method of reproduction make sense? Please only mention extraterrestrials that could plausibly exist somewhere in the real universe. |

Wookies, of course. What a question! No, seriously, I would agree with the common idea that they could be biogically quite similar to us. Probably mammals. Their anatomy could be very different, from bacteria and slugs (which aren't mammals, I know) to something like the Borg civilization. In fact, Borg seems quite plausible to me. Only referring to the physical appearance now, not the famous Borg way of "assimilating" everything Besides that, life can take billions of different forms, like on our planet alone. Mushrooms! The largest living being on Earth is a mushroom, and it lives a few feet below the ground. Tiny strings, arranged in a web which covers a huge area, are its organs. If you ask me, that thing could be just one big brain, mostly unexplored or unexplained - like any other brain on this planet. I could imagine an alien that looks just like a cloud of fog, or a snowflake from the sky which has received a cosmic ray of life, stored now in the crystal, ready to posess a creature, maybe a man. I also agree that aliens could be of no physical form and simply present themselves as hallucinations - like angelic or demonic appearances, but probably less majestic. I couldn't think of the names of the movies, but generally, I think Hollywood isn't doing too bad generally. But they exaggerate and dramatize where they can, so it's usually a bit off. But basically, I think anything is possible. From a role-playing point of view, I think that "aliens" should by definition be as "different" from anything common as imaginable. Different in their appearance, different in their habits. Whether it seems plausible to us or not. |

The first movie that comes to my mind is "war of the worlds", but that may be just because I really liked that movie

Aliens could be anything, from small microbes to evolved technologically augmented beings. Heck, they could even be living inside of a black hole, for all we know. |

chances are that most carbon based lifeforms on other planets would be singled celled or would resemble lifeforms that resemble ones on earth. past or present and the planet that it lives on would resemble our ones in both climate conditions and size our planet is a unique one, only a few percent of the universe is made out of planets that can support our definition of life, its entirely possible that the rest of the universe is filled with non-carbon based life that can support the elements and climate its given, for example instead of needing oxygen it uses heaver elements. as for most likely extratrestrials in Hollywood? I'm all for the "Stargate" idea |

I think that the alien bugs in the movie StarshipTroopers are realistic (except the plasma-laucher bugs), and also the creatures of Alien by HR Giger and Predator. |

Yes Eanbro, but I think that creatures living in black holes kind of disobeys the laws of physics. I don't think even microbes could live in a black hole. Think about it, the gravity in a black hole is so great that even light can't escape it. I know we have found life in places we thought it couldn't exist before. For example deep sea thermal vents, but I don't think it could exist in a black hole. Remember we are talking about plausible aliens, that means they have to obey the laws of chemistry and physics. I do have to admit that life in a black hole would be very interesting though. |

Wait, who said they had to be carbon based? All the aliens we have thought of look like something that exists on this planet. Arms and legs... aliens may not have those. And I doubt they would have 2 arms and 2 legs and 1 head. And also, who said our laws of physics are really laws? They could be rules. And rules can be bent until broken. Changing these laws into rules could be possible once we know more about dark matter and dark energy. |

lol I'm trying to think up aliens for a little side project I'm working on, and thinking of plausible NON-HUMANOID (star trek is good, but it gets corny when 99% of all aliens could pass for believable humans after a little plastic surgery...) aliens is difficult. i'm kinda wondering where the dividing line of life and non-life is... fire has all characteristics of life except that it isn't made of cells... but maybe cells are just a characteristic of carbon based life or something... spooky eh? |

Not if the organism was advanced enough to develop gravity inhibitors. |

i personally don't think that a black hole is a good place to raise children
and living in a black hole? maybe they are the black hole! |

Yes Eanbro, but I meant creatures that evolved naturally. Its hard to imagine something evolving in a black hole. |

silverfire56, you think a living black hole is possible? That seem extremely far fetch even for an alien organism. |

Why not? We only think in three dimensions. Heck, living in a black hole sounds fun.
IMPOSSIBLE!
Unless you make it a bug. LOGLGOGLOOLO!!!
Huh. Well, looks like I fail, but then again, mokeys > slugs. At least the pistols kick arse. |

I agree, melancor, but what about convergent evolution? Did you consider that? |
