In your opinion what was the most believable extraterrestrial in a Hollywood movie? Please don't mention microbes. Scientists keep talking about how if we find life on another planet it will most likely be microbial. Its not that wouldn't be interesting at all, its just that multi cellular life has far more personality. For that reason it is a bit more interesting. In your opinion what was the most plausible multicellular alien creature you saw in a Hollywood movie? By plausible I mean, could be a real creature, and looks like it could be something that didn't evolve on Earth. In other words it isn't related to life here, or its common ancestor with life on Earth was a microbe. Does this creature obey the laws of chemistry and physics? Also, just as important, does it obey the laws of evolution, and natural selection? Does its method of reproduction make sense? Please only mention extraterrestrials that could plausibly exist somewhere in the real universe. |

skarik, its possible for nonhumaniod aliens to evolve. The only animals on Earth you could consider humaniods are humans or extinct human ancestors. Besides I saw some very believable non humaniod aliens on the discovery channel special Alien Planet. Heres the link http://dsc.discovery.com/convergence/alienplanet/splash.html I also saw believable aliens on the the national geographic special extraterrestrial. But I can't get a working link. On both of those programs, none of the aliens looked humaniod, and only one of them was an insect. Besides near the end of Alien Planet, one of the scientist comments was something alone the lines of "its very unlikely for humaniod aliens to evolve." |

For me humanoid = two legs and a neck. Which is probably why I feel like I just got smashed in the face by a figurative serve. For example, in link you just provided (which is excellent, by the way, gotta love the Discovery channel) if I see something with two legs, a neck, forward wings, or a barb, then I think that "it can't be too alien, compared to some other things." That's actually how I think. |

You all must realize that most alien life will need to consume energy to survive. So their shape will tend to follow the contours of their environment. |

Back to the topic of Hollywood aliens. I am have trouble comming up with believeable Hollywood aliens, because almost anything the could do with an alien would be somewhat unbelievers. One of the scariest extraterrestrials on the silver screen was the creature from the first "Alien" movie. You know that black eyeless thing that chased around Segorny Weaver. That was scary. It had one really scary feature. How it reproduced. Remmember the face hugger, and how the alien's young would grow inside you and then pop out of your stomach and kill you in the process. That was scary. But one scientists on a PBS program said that it didn't make much sense, becouse how could one of them be inside you with out you knowing that it was there. You immune system would respond. So its very difficult to come up with completely plausible aliens, especially when you want to tell a good story. |

if you want a convincing alien then the only way to do that is to convince the audience that the alien is realistic and scary, if a character screams that you note that object as scary, the same thing is used for other emotions and are a key marketing tactic |

silverfire56, I'm only thinking of plausibility, not necessarily scary. |

Plausibilty - what player is going to think of it as they're gunning it down? Sure, maybe people like me might scrutinize the carcass, but when I'm firing my gunna? I don't think so. |

Humans are also aliens. Since we where kicked out of paradise down to earth. Rememember? So all humans are aliens ^_^. That explains why we cause so much trouble on this planet which is not ours

My favorite is from the movie VIRUS... It was a alien computer virus that saw the human race to be a disease on the plannet. It kills the crew of a russian reasearch ship and uses their bodies to build a form for itself..... |

luenardi, I saw that movie. It was disturbing, but was it plausible? |
