I think its time for a community game. Anyone else agree?

I was thinking along the lines of an online game but not a big advanced one, something simple. Maybe a 3D version of this game: http://www.owensworld.com/flashgames/play-662.htm

I could be in charge of modeling the city and texturing and such, maybe with Bami's help since thats what gave me the idea (his renders). I have this done so far:

This is pretty much my vision but im open to ideas because yeah its a community game. :P

Hmm, i could do the general programming.

I know gml pretty damn well and a lot of u3d (excluding matrices). I mean im not Dr.best, but im good.

But, whats with the talk of either online or turn based? Why not online and turn based?


EDIT: If we are going to do an all out battle game, then I've got motivation to work through some nights :P

My above post should clear things up, and I stand to be a programmer, level designer, modeler, and composer, menu editor. (Don't worry though I don't want to be fully responsible for the menu. :P) Of course we will need multiple programmers, level designers, modelers, and an extra composer/s wouldn't be a bad thing.

Lead Programmer (the one with the template that secondary programmers modify and send back)

Texture artists or finder (we can't use copyrighted material)

Oh dear there seems to be a communication error.
We cant have FPS in this game, for one, the models, textures and such arnt designed for you to go right up close to them. Its designed so you are far away, ie top down...

And as project manager i think we should have some of the modes EanBro suggested but have a toggle that says: TurnBased / FreeForAll.

And there is no need for Level Designers, because its just one big city. There is also no need for a texture artists for the city and i think that if your going to model something as simple as a tank, you can texture it yourself. The more people the worse off we are. (To a certain degree)

And dont forget one important thing, this is the first community game, this is like a test to see how we get along, the next project can be something bigger but right now it needs to stay manageable.

As project manager i would of course overview the source and such. I have an intermediate to advanced level of GML and an average level of U3D so i wont be lost when overseeing things.

So as ive stated, the jobs are:


City Modeler -
Zedman3d (Manager).

(Someone to model the city, streets, trees, etc.)

General Modeler -
gamemakerguy1560
Position Open

(Someone to model Tanks, general items, rockets, etc).

Programmer -
Ruud v A (Menu, Hud)
Ashrat3000 (General GML and U3D)
Dead1yM00

(Someone with a good/advanced knowledge on GML and U3D to work on the game. Trajectory, HUD, Tank movement, etc.)-

Online Programmer -
Silverfire56

(Someone to program the online code and communications.)

Effects Programmer -
Position Open

(Someone to create Shaders, program explosions, particle effects, etc.)

Sound/Music -
gamemakerguy1560 (Tank Effects)
Position Open

(Someone to create background music and effects such as explosions, tank moving sounds, etc.)

We can't forget that. It wouldn't be the same without AI. However, we dont want the AI to be stupid like in the online version, we want it to move around and use different weapons. A difficulty setting would be good.

I can make a 2D AI to perfect, then give it to someone to 'U3Dify' it. Or, by that stage, i might know enough to put the AI in myself.

So can i PLEASE be one of the AI people?

An fps will be to graphics heavy. I was thinking top-down.

2d AI can be transfered to u3d with no changes at all if the game is top-down, however, 3d pathfinding and 3d AI is ****ing hard.

Zedman I love how you keep saying "as project manager", its agitating me since I also had this idea but i never posted it :P

I am good at audio programing...
I can make and forge sound effects
I can do textures
and i can make simple A.I. look !complex!

oh yeah this dude does alot of work on mods and freeware music for games...

Hmmm. Noone said ANYTHING about it only being in a city. True, a city should be one of the maps, but others should be forest, snow, etc. About the FPS, I think that it should be allowed, but no weapon customization (besides the 3 main weapons)-just a homing rocket launcher/machine gun/or sniper, grenades, pistol, knife and C4.

True the AI should be 2d. No enterable buildings higher than 1 story. (Unless you want AI to wait outside the building until you return)

The damage system-

Helicopters 4 rockets to kill one tank, 100 bullets to kill tank, 2 rockets to kill APC, 55 bullets to kill APC

APC-90 bullets to kill chopper, 200 to kill tank, 2 shots from main to kill tank, soldiers can press a button to enter/exit, no animations neccesary

Tank-1 shot to kill helicopter/APC, 55 bullets to kill helicopter

Artillery-Instant death kill radius 20+random(10) meters

Jet fighter planes-all vehicles take 12 bullets to kill it, 1 shot from main Jets bomb has same damage as artillery but twice the radius
jets missle is twice as powerful as helicopter
jets cannon is twice as powerful as helicopter

tree meshes should be <300 poly

vehicles <600 poly

soldiers< 700 poly

weapons <200 poly

And about the low texture resolution-personally, blurred textures look good. And this is our first project...

Oh yes-some gametypes I forgot:

War (Whoever's base is destroyed first loses)

1vs.1 (So it's like C&C)

Capture the Flag

Control (Camp at the terminals, or rather the building where it is located)
