I think its time for a community game. Anyone else agree?

I was thinking along the lines of an online game but not a big advanced one, something simple. Maybe a 3D version of this game: http://www.owensworld.com/flashgames/play-662.htm

I could be in charge of modeling the city and texturing and such, maybe with Bami's help since thats what gave me the idea (his renders). I have this done so far:

This is pretty much my vision but im open to ideas because yeah its a community game. :P

Ok, I've got some time to work on the engine, but I need a description on how the game will play.

Is it first person or 3rd person? Or top down?

First person is really graphics heavy, and will run a lot slower, and you can't really switch between top down and 3rd or 1st view because top down has an unfair advantage. The player can see far behind him and does not need to aim vertically, only in the direction of the player.

I think top down would be fun. Then there can be a "look around" mode where the view becomes 1st or 3rd person.


BTW I'm going to use GM7.

I wan't FPS capabilty.
As for making the A.I. Smart and Challenging thats up to me and Dead1 if i ever get a responce from him..

I already have a exellent litte A.I. "battle field prediction system" idea, quite simple, low on resource usage. will allow AI base commander to be more aware of threats and make cordinated assualt's based on this.

Think of it this way, an fps will be more of a run 'n gun game while a tds will have more strategy and tactics with your team.

It depends on how you want the game to play.


The tank looks nice. Now it needs textures :P

Ha! I knew I should have mentioned it: The purpose of infantry is to be sneaky and dangerous, of course one guy cannot out-duel a tank or helicopter-but if that helicopter does not see any threat, it will be outmatched by the stealthy soldier.
But 2 maps will be dedicated to the classic run-n-gun FPS. ^_^

Glad you like the tank! I wish I could texture it as fast as I modeled it, but sadly, I am not very good with texturing :(

But if noone wants to, I will oblige myself.

After the game is finished, I think we can focus on having more maps (I think 7-9 is enough for the first final release.)

and like savage where some units are NPCs and you click on a point and they move/attack it. Should we allow top down controls? Where it is like a top-down shooter and you can control vehicles (not just their commands) while in top-down mode without having to switch to 3rd person/first person mode? In addition to the 3rd person/first person modes?

You cant have top down as well as first/third person if you are going to be able to shoot, because you can't aim vertically.

If you are driving a vehicle that can't shoot, then it could be top down.

My head is pounding reading the last two pages.

It can not be both FPS and TopDown. It just does not work. Your either gonna have to make the FPS look like crap because it uses TopDown levels and models or you make the TopDown run like crap because youve been modeling and texturing for an FPS.

I dont think its even upto you EanBro to go off writing documents, its as if your deciding for us.

So, once again, it cant be both because as stated by a very smart person before, TopDown has a very unfair advantage. Lets not try and cram as much as we can into this okay? Why cant this be fun, less complicated, but still have a somewhat challenging game to make. There will be plenty of other chances to create a FPS. Ie, as soon as where finished.

And with the levels, its just going to be one Big City, you know, like GTA does, doesnt mean its bland and boring, if we make it the right size with forests IN it and such it will be a cool little creation.

And we dont need a Design Document at the moment, because right now we cant even figure out if its an MMOFPS, TopDown Strategic, ThirdPerson Shooter, its everywhere. But 100% forsure we need one once we agree. And thats going to have to be maybe my job with help from one or two other respected members.

@FaTaL_N00B: Glad to have you onboard. Mr. Modeler. ^_^

Me and zedman3d talked over this and most likely the game play will be as follows:

There are no weapons, only vehicles. This is a vehicle war, with all the options such as deathmatch, team deathmatch, etc. You may get out of your current vehicle and run to another one, but you can be killed in the process. The vehicles will be helicopters, small planes, tanks, a jeep with an auto turret (like a warthog), and more.

The view style can be either close up 3rd person or far 3rd person (this will be an option in game)

i actually think that a FPS is pretty easy to do if we break up the workload.
so far i have the impression that this game is a fps with vehicles and online

this isnt a rly hard game to make i have a few ideas.

so is it a fps with vehicles or is it a simple tank game? don't worry about the difficulty just choose one

we need to all agree on the game type and goals before we even start to think about the coding, models ect
the hardest part is getting started

for now i do suggest we start with something simple, like tanks. i know everyone wants to make the 'most-awesomest-awesome-game-ever' but before you can do that, you have to at least finish a game. so i suggest starting out with a simple, but fun and rewarding game, not a halo or COD-ish game.
