I think its time for a community game. Anyone else agree?

I was thinking along the lines of an online game but not a big advanced one, something simple. Maybe a 3D version of this game: http://www.owensworld.com/flashgames/play-662.htm

I could be in charge of modeling the city and texturing and such, maybe with Bami's help since thats what gave me the idea (his renders). I have this done so far:

This is pretty much my vision but im open to ideas because yeah its a community game. :P

I agree. Lets just make a 3D tanks game with a good AI. FULL STOP. After this project, we can then make an FPS or whatever you people want.

I have aboslutly no idea exactly what im making AI for. Am i making AI for tanks? Troops? Air veichles?. Is it first person AI? turnbased? strategy?. Me and luenardi need to know these things before we can start (and whoever else is doing AI).

IMPORTANT POST

Lets just make a tank game, with the ability to choose maybe 2 other vehicles. Then, you have two modes. First mode is FreeForAll. This is a more close down thirdperson view of your vehicle/tank. You do as you please. The next is Turn Based. You can see more of the area in this and have a further away view.

The game types are:

Capture the Flag (FreeForAll only)
Team Deathmatch (All Modes)
EveryManForHimself (All Modes)

Im just gonna go ahead and make the decision so we can get something started. Ill make a design document as soon as i can.

Ive already discussed this on MSN with Ashrat and Luenardi and they more or less agree.

I don't understand how all of these misconceptions arise. I've ran poll's for everything, even stated that the document was a BETA, yet all of you act as if this is a dictatorship. And perhaps you cannot understand that a top-down and full 3d game can be FULLY integrated.

Anyway, I have decided that since Zedman started the topic, the FPS functionality can be added after everything else (as I said earlier.) Perhaps as a Mod of the game. As for the top-down, the only reason I was pushing it was because of a few member's requests, which are now apparently fickle. So that can be added later as well.

hey can i join in on this ?! lol id like to do graphics! ( part time modeling)
i have 10 years experience since 1998) started in lightwave, moved on to 3D Studio DOS 4 (1994 version) thats the doss version of 3D studio Max by the way,

also my 2 cents.
Maybe we could have a vote on how the game will play?
personally i think we should neatly re-present our ideas in a single separate thread marked perhaps,,, (community project game-play planing or something)
than vote on the best aspects that look like they would be the most fun to play and combine them into a single game idea, than mature the idea from there,

though i feel that may be a bit complex with all the dissorder,
but whoever said makeing a solad game with a team is easy,?
especially when forming a new team that doesn't have a proper hierarchy setup.
but i think i like the no hierarchy thing better in a way, its refreshing. hahah

also remember we are only limited by our artistic creativness, not the program.
i beleave there are always work-arounds that can be done in any situation,

Here is my game-play and controls Pitch to you guys.
i hope some of it may be inspirational or useful to someone

when i first seen the tank game idea...
i pictured it in 2 different manors.
first was the classic overhead shooter. (not much came to me about that prospective) just the game Expendable on dream-cast and PC and some old Atari tank game) u guys ever play Expendable?

second thought that came to mind
was an over the shoulder 3ed person type view with adjustable camera that can zoom away and zoom closer to the tank,
(this plays like the overhead shooter view with aiming guided by a special 3D aiming cursor that i will illastrate in a conceptual Pitch video later on.

also perhaps the player can switch to a sniping like mode where they can see from within the tank or just over the canon barrel 3ed person.

my conceptual controls pitch would be something like..

central mouse wheel scroll to make the tanks barrel point up or down,
(this together with the 3d aiming cursor lets the tank aim no mater what position the camera is in.)
camera zoom is done by holding space key and scrolling mouse wheel together.

left mouse butten to shoot,
right mouse butten to reload,
move the mouse to turn the canon turret and 3ed person camera.
than to move the tank....WASD keys perhaps,,,
W and S being farward backwards,
A and D to turn the tank,, or just push W and S(farward backwards) and where the tank is looking it turns altomaticly.


and in sniping mode the player has full FPS like aiming with the mouse,

i have a feeling maybe all that is a bit to complex, lol

I suggested the top-down mode as well, but strangely, it was rejected by the very same person it requested by!

Your idea about the tank control system is pretty much the same idea that I have, except I disagree about the use of the mouse wheel, as it is imprecise. Also, not all mice have a mouse wheel, it seems much simpler to use the y location of the mouse? Does it not? Tank movement can be Q/A Left tread forward/backward E/D Right tread forward/backward. I guess standard WSAD movement can be toggle-able as well. Reloading should be automatic as there are personnel inside of the tank. "Sniping" mode is a definite must-have. In 3rd person mode there should be a crosshair as well.

i guess the mouse wheel is out.

anyways the 3d cursor i mentioned above is the cross-hair just a unique cross-hair.
i couldn't explain it above so well, let me get this pitch video together,
it still may be use-full for the camera and aiming system at least.

Oh man.. this isn't looking good.

I agree with everyone that an FPS will be fun and a great game to make, but how many games have we made so far? A good idea would be to start with the tanks game with a couple vehicles, and then once that is finished, we can expand on that and make it an FPS like eEanbro said. Then the FPS already has a good engine with vehicles, scoring, and online to work with.

Actually I said that you can't really mix top down with 3rd or 1st person.

@Andrew75- Or do yo mean like the crosshair for throwing grenades in Gears Of War?

note that the pivit point is actually where the camera is looking.

In the video the camera pivot point and camera operate separate from each other.
they each move on there own pre-defined paths which are linked to the barrel of the gun, so if the gun moves the paths follow accordingly.

if the camera's collision detection represented by the sphere..
hits a building the ground or something.
than the the camera's travel path..moves along the gun-barrel's Y axis pushing the track forward along that axis,
moving the linked camera along with it.

also if an object gets in the line of site between the camera and the tank than the
object becomes transparent allowing for the tank to always be visible.

anyways the video just represents an idea I'm just throwing out on the table.
i don't mean for it to act exactly like this video.
keep in mind this is just my pitch.

yes very similer but not quite, ill do a video about the 3d targeting next,
what im going for with this idea is an expantion onto the overhead idea.

imagine having an invisible beam coming from the gun,
im thinking about something along the lines of the lazier beam demo on the forums here.
but at the end of the beam where it meets an object it creates a transparent crosshair like object on the surface of the target
alowing for the versatile camera system and pretty good aiming.

I think I see what you mean, I'll incorporate that into the engine I've got so far and post a screen shot.

But there could be problems with the camera if you drive the tank down a narrow hallway. The camera's sphere won't fit in but the tank will.

As for what I've got so far, you can walk around in a city, get in a tank, and move around and aim.

hey yeah that's what I'm talking about,
also the camera collision sphere doesn't have to be so big as in my illustration,
just needs to cast some longer rays towards the ground so that when the
camera collides with the ground it doesn't go inside the tank(just over it)
and can sort of look over the top of the barrel slightly,

and as for the narrow buildings if the camera cant fit than the gun shouldn't be able to turn also because its probably gana hit a wall lol.

anyways is it possible to rig the camera smilier to how i have it in the video.
it works sort of like a bone hiarchey, with objects linked togeather creating a simple yet complex system
i don't have time tonight but I'd like to draw up a link list tomorrow sometime,
even if its not used that's fine , its pretty fun doing it,
