Why can't you use it for detailed models?

Because it applies the texture to the whole model if you make the model a certain way.

You could always map the model with different textures in certain places, export it, and then apply the textures. It should separate the sections into different materials.

It might be, but first you have to have it. If you don't, might as well start saving or get another plan, because in the ballpark between 3000 and 5000 bucks a pop, it's not cheap. If you have it, that's great. It's probably easier, and most likely has features Blender doesn't have (at its cost, it better).
