Well, I find heightmaps to be a major pain in the ass, so do you have any suggestions for other environmental creating techniques?

You could use heightmaps to generate terrain in Blender, and export it as a model. You could also build it from scratch, vertex by vertex, like other models (don't want to sound rude or sarcastic, just suggesting). For placing vegetation, what I like to do is go into my game, and write down the positions one by one, and then place them in a text file, then create the vegetation in a list.

Well, there's not really any other way to build it. Sorry. It's kind of like modeling a human. There is no easy way, while still getting everything you wanted.

I don't use terrains. I model everything by hand. I've just been doing it since 7th grade, so I'm fast doing it.

Ah, ok. I might try that...Or a program like Earthsculptor that you don't need to buy...(Suggestions?)...I still have collision detection to do if I don't use terrain, and with regular objects. I hate collision detection coding.
