Hi, I know I am just an average member of the community and its not my duty at all but I have a concern... 'New members' of the community.... I strongly believe we are scaring them away when they ask 'too noob' questions... Pardon me but sometimes it worries me when I see a new member asks a so obvious question what someone advanced with U3D will say about it... I can bet a thousand when each of us came to this community, we had a gazillion questions, well except Dr.B.... The point is, maybe we shud try as much as we can to be nice to new people... For instance, if someone asks for an example that a thousand other noobs have asked before, maybe just paste a link to one good one or nicely ask them to do a search rather than throw flames at them for being too noobie... Yeah you can throw flames at the advanced users if you feel like it, for instance, just yesterday, I asked a question about 'first_frame last_frame'... That was kinda 'too noob' I DESERVE SOME FLAME C'MON! :-)
So yes... thats my announcement... Together lets help make Ultimate 3D big, not scare noobs away. The noobs are the future of our community... Lets care for them like a new born baby or like a newly purchased Super PC... :-)

Thank you for allowing me on the platform...

I remember my first big problem I had with U3D 1.x and posted it in the U3D topic on GMC. I couldn't figure out why my models showed up without textures and then I found out I had to have my textures in the gfx-folder :D That must be one of the most common noob mistakes that pops up still today.

My biggest problem when I first started was loading textures! I just did not understand that you had to put a texture in the GFX folder, then load it and give it a number, and then use that number to display it!

Most of the time though noobs do ask really stupid questions. They come here and they don't know anything about 3d game making. They say "How do I make those 3D sprite things?" or "You say I should use the INIT script, whats a script?". Or "I am really good at making games, by the way, whats GML?". They need to learn the programing language before they even think about using U3D.

Other wise I would say your right.
If you had my mind, you could rule the world...

I think the dumbest mistake i ever made was my statement about GM reaching a limit.."I made a massive mistake with my code!" and the one where i P.M.ed DR.Best and blamed him for a bug with 3ds animation... turned out i was using the old model viewer... :P

We realy need to be abit more helpfull... i know even i get so agro when ppl don't read the manual "it's free dammit!" and some times even i dissmiss a person without realy helping... :(

I think the reason many of us are so militant towards the newcomers is because you often see posts like this (exaggerated slightly):
H3Lp H0\/\/ r0t4t3 c4/\/\3r4 g1\/3 c0d3 y35

Of course the leet speak is an exaggeration, but sometimes we get topics on that level of ridiculousness. Would you build a chair before reading the instructions? No. So why would you build a game before reading the manual?

You don't build a chair. The chair builds itself.

Off topic, am I the only one who hit the ceiling of U3D, hit it hard, hard enough to the point where I was forced to abandon Game Maker for all 3D needs?

On topic, I'm astounded all of you can have an intelligent conversation about this. I'm sitting here going: that's the most epic justification I've heard ever.

No. Abduction died because GM got in the way. Mainly because of one of it's senseless errors that makes it impossible to play the game. As in it claims a variable doesn't exist, when you check, and there are absolutely no references to that variable in the code that's giving you errors. Plus, I really wanted depth shadowmaps, but GM would be too slow for that. I was in the process of implementing simple shadow maps when it died on me, though.

Right. I'm not talking dying. I'm talking your pipeline completely stops. I'm talking, you're full steam on the project, so full steam that you convert the whole game from Game Maker in a week. I'm talking it's not Game Maker, but using Ultimate 3D with Game Maker. I'm talking hitting the glass ceiling and getting your blood on it.

I found that old plasma rifle last night, by the way.

I'm not talking about unable to implement something, unable to do something, I'm talking you can't do anything. There's no workaround, no way to fake it, no way to do it yourself. I'm talking, full on broken skull and shattered tears. You hit that? It hurts, man. Not physically, but mentally it kills ya. Inside, you just can't take it, and for the second after you make contact, you're wondering, "What just happened to me?"

That's what happened. I got pissed so I grabbed a rocket and exploded the ceiling.

So that ceiling that I would have hit had I not decided to bail on the depth shadowmaps?

A little bit farther than that. You would have hit the 15 FPS low mark, which is the lowest U3D can go with now GM burden, and then you would have hit the last stone: the actual game.

I remember being new to this place, and U3D. You guys didn't bail on me for the simple stuff that i asked. Some of the post I've put apparently already had topics like it...but you guys didn't make me feel all crappy, i thank you all.

off topic: Of course, i still can get some things figured out in u3d, but I'll save my questions for other topics.
