That's pretty cool, I went to college and became a professional driver. And guess what all my jobs as of late have revolved around, driving. I've only tried once to get into a job having anything to do with computers, I walked in and they were selling clicks for revenue. So it was a sales position with moderate to no programming(besides the occasional customer that needs a site built) but I didn't get that job. I wanted to see if I could make side money from youtube while working, right when I started making revenue google adsense banned me for invalid clicks on my website(must have been a glitch, or maybe someone didn't like my site and attacked it)and with out adsense, you lose your youtube partnership. I've wanted to make money in graphic design, I've made a few dollars on turbosquid but it's mostly my fault for only having ten items up at a time. I just now started using fiverr because people have said they make thousands a month but that would be over 200 gigs. |

It's not like that's a lot for a full-time job. Anyway, the key to getting jobs in the area you want to get jobs in is to be good in the area you want to get jobs in. And the key to becoming good is to learn a lot. Institutions like colleges can help you there. |

I don't have a fancy education, but I do have a lot of valuable contacts from who I get some small jobs from. I'm also In the process of starting up my gaming company with the help of a contact of mine and I also have my full time job as a programmer and graphic designer, which I got pretty randomly after I did some graphic design work for said company for a game, about 2 years ago. Most importantly I have a lot of self taught knowledge and experience and a lot of stuff to showcase, and that is much more valuable than any education. I have rarely needed to show my grades from school at any job interview I've been to. Employers just doesn't care as much about that as they do about real talent and experience. |

My girlfriends dad is an engineer and after taxes he makes over 8k a month. If I got a local driving job I would be making just over 2k, if I got a long distance driving job I would make between 4-7k a month(but that's working 70 hours a week, truck driving). minimum wage here is $8.95/hr and that's doing something like fast food. Where I'm at, graphics design and programming jobs are very rare. They are just now coming into the area and are extremely small scale. Here you would probably make more money using turbosquid than working at one of these companies that just bought an office last month and can only give 25 hours a week at minimum wage to its employees. If you had to try and get all of your income exclusively from the internet, what would you do? Edited by zelda4evr, May 1 2013, 07:41 PM.

I work as programmer for an automobile sharing company (web based), pretty nice to do next to my education since my boss allows me to work at home. 14 hours a week gives me a decent sum of money seeing I still live with my parents, and I also get money from the state for college. (Which I could pay from my work alone).

I'm in high school still, and trying to complete a game before I graduate to impress you people/teachers/ I have recently been getting things done, surprisingly, although my models would seem more reasonable if I did them in the 90's. |

I remember someone saying that if you create a 1024*1024 texture and export it to 256*256, it would have no loss of detail. I doubted it, but I'm wondering if it works. If it does, what file format does it work with (jpg, png, gif, fml) ? Also, can someone tell me the difference between normal maps and bump maps? Aren't bump maps like a heightmap for terrain, while normal maps give a weird illusion of extra geometry? |

256x256 is too small for a detailed texture that's gonna be viewed up close. 512x512 would be minimum in my book. |

Whoever told you that was sadly mistaken. However, form minimal quality loss, PNG would be a good guess. I've never used FML, and both JPG and GIF are lossy formats. Bump maps can be used in similar applications as normal maps, but normal maps are easier to use and generally much higher quality. Bump maps are generally greyscale (although this is not always strictly true) and are therefore usually limited to 256 different levels of height (in traditional 24-bit color). Bump maps operate on the principle of height displacement, and therefore are generally better for displacement than they are for bump/normal mapping. Bump maps used for bump mapping end up building or approximating a normal map anyway. Normal maps use three colors to modify the normals (or the direction vector perpendicular to or pointing away from a face) for a pixel. Each pixel in the texture is essentially a direction vector described by the strength of the colors in that position. Red values from 0.0 to 1.0 (or 0 to 255 in 24-bit color) goes from -1 to +1 along the x-axis, green maps to -1 to +1 along the y-axis, and blue maps to -1 to +1 along the z-axis. Normal maps do not describe the surface itself, only lighting directions, although I suppose it would be theoretically possible to construct an approximate heightmap if a valid starting height point and a pixel scale can be described (it'd be a lot like estimating a solution to a differential equation using Euler's method, or calculating an integral using Riemann sums). You could think of a normal map like a slope field, if you wish. In tangent space normal mapping, each direction vector described by the normal map is transformed by the tangent space matrix generated for its geometry in order to provide the proper transformation. Generally speaking, use bump maps for displacement and normal maps for normal mapping. It is theoretically possible to use either for the other, but it is very inefficient and a waste of time. |

don't try to create a normal map yourself(in photoshop). Just open blender(2.66) use the sculpt tool and create an extremely high quality model(apply as much detail as possible, down to wrinkles in the skin) and then use blender to retopologize(better known as the shrink wrap modifier)this allows you to place polygons over the surface of your model, effectively creating one model with a high polygon count, and one with a low count. then open the uv image editor(in blender, make sure your 3d view is still visible) and apply a blank blender texture to your low poly model(after UV mapping it of course, and this is super easy in blender). then you select both models, and in the blender render options make sure you only select normal mapping(it has a few settings). and now if you apply that normal map to your low polygon model in U3D, with good lighting, it will have the same normals as the high polygon model.

So I got bored and had like an hour of free time, so redrew icons for my taskbar. I thought it looked cool.Oh yeah, thank all of you peeps for widening my knowledge, and trying your best not to use confusing words when explaning. Also, I just made up the FML format, not even sure if it exists.

I just designed a fuel cell for small products, it's so small it fits inside the battery compartment. So instead of using stored energy(lithium ion) you are creating energy, storing it and using it all at the same time. Giving incredibly long battery life, and you will never have to charge it up, just buy an eye dropper with, "fuel" in it and you're good to go. These eyedroppers are incredibly cheap, maybe there will be fueling stations at different locations. Imagine when you say, "fill it up" you're handing them your cell phones, cameras, and handhelds. No one steal, my idea(you really only could if you knew the science behind this, I know the exact materials and compounds required, don't even google it you thief) |
