It sounded like a cool idea at first, but I don't think it will take off... There just isn't anything about the Ouya that excites me. I feel like it's going to turn into another Pandora: a cool idea that just doesn't take off. Unless Boxer8 can get some console-selling landmark titles (which would likely come via major third-party developers and publishers) or a collection of really impressive indie games, it'll just be another way to play Angry Birds.
Oh wow, you are not optimistic about this new console? Shocker ;)

What a sad world it would be if we all though that everything new and innovative would fail (well it would as no one would buy it).

You know, Sega has published Sonic 4 and Sonic CD on the Ouya market. Final Fantasy games are also available.
Those are great games. But I have Sonic CD on my Nexus 7, and could just as easily purchase Sonic 4 and Final Fantasy III. I just know that consoles don't sell unless they have publishers backing them up with new titles, not just old ones pulled over from another system. I understand it's early, but I looked at the big name titles for Ouya, and most of them (if not all) are pulled straight from the stock Android market.

I don't like to be a pessimistic grouch, but I also like to be realistic. The Ouya has more media support and financial backing than a lot of other small consoles entering the market, but it's trying to appeal to a niche market. Dudebros won't purchase it unless it gets Call of Duty. Owners of Android tablets and phones won't purchase it unless it gets some solid exclusives they can't get on their phones. iSheep won't purchase it unless it gets an Apple label slapped on the side (and then it will sell better than sliced bread, even if it is utterly useless). I guess it will get some retail exposure, but I suspect the average consumer just won't be interested unless they know it has some big name pumping out games behind it. Oh, and that does remind me: digital distribution is great (most of my games are through Steam these days), but I think it will be a little disconcerting for consumers to see a console sitting on a shelf without any games around it. Meanwhile, they walk over to the Wii U aisle and see some titles sitting around it. In a few months, it'll be the same thing with the Xbox and the PS4. Consoles with aisles of games sitting around it. I'm not knocking digital distribution (there is something to be said about physical media, though), but the physical presence of games is a powerful thing. I love the free-to-try/play aspect, though.

Any reason I couldn't play these on my phone? (which is able to hook up to the TV, and should be able to use a gamepad via bluetooth. Else new stuff is coming out to stream the screen over lan with minimal latency. then I can just use an USB gamepad.)

That ouya seems pretty neat, though I prefer less aerodynamic consoles.

So... After my second or third playthrough, I finally actually bothered to go beat Final Fantasy VIII by fighting the final boss. It's fun how easy it is to break the game with the junction system. :D

No there's no real reason you can't play these on your phone. Ouya is android based so technically you can install the same .apk on your phone. A lot of games on Ouya are designed specifically for Ouya and run better because of that, you would have to turn the settings down. Any .apk you have on your phone should work on ouya as well.

I think it would be tough. Games on Ouya have the controlls mapped according to the Ouya controller, so it is not guaranteed the controls would even work with a non-Ouya controller.

Yes, that's the whole idea.
The OpenPandora is also a niche device and was never trying to compete with the current generation of handhelds, just bring everything awesome together in one device and that was open and free for anyone. That's what makes these systems great. If you buy a Ouya and expect it to be a rival to the PS4, then you are not the target audience for this system. The target audience is those of us who just want to play great games, which there are a lot of on Ouya (over 200 of them, where about 50 are exclusive).

See I don't have hundreds to put towards gaming, but I still enjoy to play a game with my girlfriend. We don't have a powerful gaming pc, but we do have a high end laptop. We use an xbox controller and play 2 player games all the time. When I do get my hands on a console(like when I had a wii, or xbox 360) the first thing I do is mod it, so I can run my own games. The Ouya sounds great to me, because it's affordable and you don't need to mod it to do what I am already going to do to every console I touch. It's almost the same idea as this http://www.fxitech.com/cotton-candy/what-is-it/ to turn TVs in your house into media/game hubs. If you have the money, you could put one in each room and if you're like me you don't watch tv anyway so its perfect.

Got one of my games to run on OUYA today from Unity. Was pretty simple once you figured out how to setup everything (which honestly took me a while).
