Like i said.. if i was there it would be fixed.
Try doing a re-install cuz a recovery can sometimes miss or skip files.
If it a trojan then it's probably embedded it self into the recovery archive as a form of self preservation..

Maybe moisture build up?
Capacitors don't work that way.. :P if it was over 7yrs old then i could understand a capacitor leak.

A good clean with electronics alcohol spray "gfx, mobo, ram" and compressed air blast.
then leave it to dry for at least 12 hrs.

Yeah.. i remember how CD's used to be solid, you could cover e'm with jam and still use e'm.

You miss understood.. this sound clearly like a hardware failure.. harddrive are most of the time re-use able.
Nothing says its a hard-drive failure, his BSOD errors say its a memory error, or it could be anything. If I were him, I'd first try to reinstall, it may be a failing driver(Which it is by most BSOD cases). And he has nothing to lose by trying a reinstall, he have to reinstall if he replaces his harddrive aswell. But if it was a hard-drive fail, I doubt it will cause random BSOD's...

Oh! Sorry! You meant buy a new computer? xD, then I'm with you! But I still recommend a reinstall, as a last try. You cant use your old windows installation on a new computer anyway ;)
If it is a hardware failure and not caused by some malicious program or faulty system configuration, then it must be a rather serious one because I just did a full system recovery only a couple of months ago.
system restore often doesnt fully help, there could be some bad sectors. reformatting your drive seems a good thing to do, offcourse youll lose all your stuff. unless backed up.

else a part of your computer is damaged, and you need to replace it.

Edit woah, im on the wrong page here, sometimes I get directed to the wrong page... its kinda annoying.

I said system recovery, not system restore.

Yeah, this was already mentioned, but it sounds like a hardware problem. My brother's newer PC that he bought about 9 months ago crashed all the time because HP used a faulty motherboard. Actually, the model (e9180f) itself, as well as a bunch of other models (all of them in the Pavilion Elite line), used and suffered from this faulty motherboard. Now that HP replaced the motherboard with one that works (a bunch of angry people threatening to sue tends to have that effect), it works like a charm. Have you had any power surges recently that could have damaged a component? I don't remember if you said anything.

not that i know of, but i suspect there may have been a secret surge because what are the odds of 2 toaster ovens breaking in one week?
