I'm not sure, but I don't think U3D 3.0 is "news" anymore. But I'm sure Dr.Best is actively updating it.

aah, ok... Cool...
I wonder what percentage he'd allocate to the proportion of completion of development to the targeted first public release as of now....
Last time I checked he was developing a game with it so I am guessing really close to done now....

Again, I'm not sure, but I don't think his intentions are to go public with the engine unlike with U3D 2.x. Seeing as how many newbies who needs help and support with U3D 2.x, I think he made the right call keeping it low profile and private.

Not that I dont like the idea of a private release, to the contrary which I find rather cool,
but Desp, dont you think its rather just a natural balance of things to have loads of question, at times even annoying ones, when you produce something new and different, even the simplest of a thing....

Well, there's no reason not to publish some information, so here's the latest news I've got.

Ultimate 3D 3.0 and the game I am developing with it are my hobby projects. As such I only develop them, if I have the time. Unfortunately this does not happen too often. Currently I am starting on my bachelor thesis, so that won't be getting any better. This is why development goes slow and news are rare.

The latest news is that I decided to redo the shader system. The new system is a very cool, modular, node based system, that will allow me to create complex effects quickly. If I find the time, I will create a GUI based application to create shaders with it. With such an editor, it would be possible to create shaders without writing any code and extending the built in functionality through custom HLSL code, would be also quite simple. Unfortunately this new system is still incomplete, so currently the engine is not functional.

The game has the same slow progress. At the moment it is on halt due to the work on the engine (and the work on the engine is on halt due to the work on the thesis). Once I can continue it, I will put some more work into the world editor and finish the first level. After that I really need to improve on the controls and the HUD. When this is done some alpha release or at least a neat announcement with some screenshots is planned. I intend to make the world editor for the game public, thus that everybody can contribute new maps.

In terms of working hours needed to get there, it is quite close, but since I do not have much time, it can take months. Anyway I am really motivated to get this project done. Most of the feedback I got on early pre-alpha versions, was very positive.

Currently a public release of Ultimate 3D 3.0 itself is not planned.

I am very sorry to hear that there will be no new public U3D, though I understand why.

It takes a large team to keep such a project up, something that is very hard for one person.

I look forward to seeing your game. (This sounds way to much like a "I am leaving" message...)

U3D is how I got started programming, and I will always remember it for that.

And to those out there that will keep pushing U3D to the limit, and past, you rule.

Not planning one and not happening are two different things, though its not likely to happen.

I spoke to DR.B about this some time ago and he said that the chances are.. low. <_<
Also.. gm is not the friendly-est tool when using dll's unless you use GM-api. Dll without api 500 fps, Dll with api 1200 fps.

But if enigma shows up the u3d dll could be made to run faster than hell with it.
and GM users will feel right at home with it's GM inspired gui. ^_^

We can only hope.

ooops.. i only saw That you replied now.. :P

I must be getting blinder the older i get..

Do you mean your message or mine? Mine isn't ;) . Even though I don't have much time, I still find it fun to answer questions on this forum once in a while.

Right. And if it ever happens, it won't be for Game Maker.

Same here.
I moved straight from doing crappy topdown shooter "games" with GM5's DnD functions to programming with U3D.
... Wich does show off in my dump questions in the earliest posts. Jumping overboard with cement shoes really isn't the easiest way to learn how to swim, but it worked in the end...
Have I really been here five years?

When it was announced that U3D 3.0 wont have game maker support. I just thought that: I'll see on what language it's going to be when it gets out.
I had to learn it from scratch once already, at least this time I have some experience to begin with. :D

Dont worry, GML is alot like c++, only c++ is more strict, and adds lots of other stuff. like classes and pointers. (which are kinda like instances).

Only downside is, c++ compilers are even worse then gamemaker. Atleast gamemaker works, the compilers dont 60% of the time. Only once did my compiler work as supposed to. and that was before I could even work with GML correctly.

That's not true. During the seven years I've been working with C++, I have seen my compiler do mistakes only a few times and usually a complete rebuild fixed the problems. Probably you just missed something and had wrong expectations. Or you have been working with a really old compiler (like VC 6.0).

Nope, its purely the compilers, maybe I am just having bad karma here :/ (Most of the times the compilers where like they where damaged, maybe incompatible with some parts of hardware/drivers..)
