Hi everybody,

as in the last two years I'd like to ask you, if anybody here is coming to the gamescom 2011 in Cologne. It takes place from 17th to 21st of August. Wednesday is for trade visitors only (like me). I just bought my ticket for all five days.

With friendly regards,
Dr. Best

Sure. I guess I'll have quite a bit of fun playing unreleased games on high-end hardware ^_^ . If you have some hints, which games I should check out, go ahead and post them.

Besides I'm gonna meet the guys who just released this new indie game platform. I meet them frequently, but talking to them a week after the release of the platform should be interesting. Though I'm afraid their news won't be too positive.

Really wish I could come.

Maybe next year. I wish that one day our whole family can be together.

I've never played Dota (and don't even like it), so I am probably the wrong one to judge that, but a friend of mine is going to check it out. I'll tell you about his opinion.

do tell which games really looked intresting to you, if not from a gamer's viewpoint, from a programmer's viewpoint.

Ok, so today I've been at the gamescom all day. It was the exclusive day for trade visitors and press, so lines were short and I got to see a lot. I'm trying to give you a little list here with some comments, but it won't be complete. I sorted it alphabetically. For those who don't know: Live walkthrough means that somebody plays the single player mode on a big screen and you watch that and listen to the comments. Video walkthrough is the same, but it is recorded.

  • Assassin's Creed - Revelations (live walkthrough and played multi player): There has been an Assassin's Creed presentation on every gamescom and it has always been worth watching. It just took them a few minutes to get half of Constantinople burning. The multi player is pretty much the same as in Assassin's Creed brotherhood. You move through a city with lots of crowds and try to kill other Assassin's without getting killed yourself.
  • Batman - Arkham City (played single player): That game has some really nice action. A bit of more or less random button smashing makes Batman do some awesome moves. That is quite fun. It also looks really nice.
  • Call of Duty Black Ops (played multi player): Nice game. Now I understand where all this stuff in Crysis 2 MP came from.
  • Crysis 2 (played single player on PC and in 3D): Playing that game on a high end PC was nice. It looked really good. Unfortunately the 3D display did not work flawlessly. It gave me lots of irritations.
  • Deus Ex - Human Revolution (played single player): I love the trailers for this game. The game itself seemed quite nice as well, but I could not get into it fast enough. If you fail to stay undiscovered and can't handle shooters with a game pad properly, you are dead quickly.
  • Dota 2: Just passed by the stand and got myself a T-shirt. The game looks pretty much like Dota in Warcraft 3.
  • Far Cry 3 (live walkthrough): It looked alright, but did not seem very inspired. Crashing on an island full of insane murderers is not the best story I've heard so far.
  • Mass Effect 3 (trailers and played single player): Seems alright.
  • Motor Storm Apocalypse (played single player): This game has already been around last year as a very early alpha. Since then a lot has changed. The idea of the game is that you have races in cities, while they are collapsing. Sounds like more action than it is.
  • NBA 2k12: Great animations, great rendering of the players. Other than that it seemed like any other NBA.
  • Need for Speed (whatever the next version is): Well, you all know Need for Speed, don't you?
  • Nintendo 3DS with Metal Gear Solid and some Luigi game: The only reason why I had an interest in the 3DS is that I wanted to see the 3D display. It is not that great. The Luigi game had quite nice and nonirritating 3D effects, but it did not really contribute to the immersion. In Metal Gear Solid the scenes had great depth and that yielded strong irritations, if the 3D effect was set to a high level.
  • Prey 2 (video walkthrough): I guess this is my favorite of the day. The presentation was not that good, but the game itself looks very promising. The levels have a cool style and the gameplay seems very versatile. I am definitely looking forward to this.
  • Rage (played single player on XBox 360 and PC): I said that last year and I say it this year. Rage does not impress me. The gameplay is good average. Running around, killing mutants and humans. The graphics did not live up to my expectations. The one thing that you would expect to be good in Rage are the texture resolutions, due to the mega texturing approach. Well, guess what: They aren't. The texture resolutions are actually very poor. I guess the reason for this is that they did not reuse textures, but made individual textures a lot. This contributes a little to the authenticity, but not that much. Except for the textures the graphics are good, but not great. On the other hand the animations are very nice.
  • Resistance 3 (played single player with Playstation Move): If you like playing shooters with the mouse, you probably hate playing them with the game pad. Playstation Move is yet another alternative. The cool thing is that you aim by pointing the controller, which has more similarity to the real thing. The bad thing is that precision is quite low compared to a mouse. Resistance 3 seems to be quite a good shooter.
  • Saints Row the Third (video walkthrough): Weirdest presentation of the day. Naked chicks on hover motor cycles having a killing spree through the city.
  • Silent Hill Downpour (played alpha single player): This was actually the first Silent Hill I played. It is nice to have a game in which most problems can not be solved with a gun. It was a nicely scripted experience. For example it brought you into a room with three doors while you were being chased by some thing. And no matter what you did. The only door, which would open, was always the last one.
  • Sniper 2 - Ghost Warrior (played single player): If you like sniper weapons this is probably the game for you. I don't.
  • Star Craft II - Heart of the Swarm (played single player): I am not the RTS type, but I gave this one a chance anyway. Looks alright.
  • Star Wars - The old republic (played multi player): This game has been around since the first gamescom. Now it is nearly done. First mission: Kill the ugly worm like things, which crawl around everywhere. Well, it is an MMORPG, so what do you expect?
  • The Darkness II (played single player): Quite fun game play and look.
  • The Witcher 2 (trailers): CD Project is making DLCs and new features continuously and they give them away for free. That's the message of their representation and it's cool.
  • Warhammer 40,000 - Space Marine (played multi player): You don't get to move very fast, if your suit is as heavy as a tank. This is like the counter part to Quake 3 Arena in the shooter world. Interesting.
Don't know if anybody bothers to read this, but I just wanted to write it down, before I forget it all. I've been asked what I played so far several times and it always felt like a question that is hard to answer. The ten hours passed by very fast. Now I need to get some sleep, before I get back there tomorrow. The trade-fair is a lot of fun, but it is also very exhausting. Especially because I am moving on crutches currently. I probably posed a record in playing games, while standing on a single leg today.

If you want to know more about some particular game feel free to ask.

I've been waiting for this one for years, and have it pre-ordered :D
