Hardware upgrade; For my desktop PC

Recently my 1TB HDD screwed up. Now I have too much money and too little time to reinstall the system before I've upgraded the hardware. So here is what I want to get:
- A new motherboard and CPU. I prefer Intel CPUs and it should be a quadcore.
- A new graphics device. It has to be an nVidia card, because I want CUDA support and the fancy nVidia development tools.
- One or more new HDDs with ca. 1TB in total. I'd rather have a relatively fail-safe HDD than a cheap or big one.
- An SSD drive with at least 60GB, preferably 100GB. I want to have my sources and binaries on it to reduce compile times.

Everything else is already available. I've got 8GB RAM, optical drives, a 650W power supply, a tower with good air cooling and some additional HDDs. Though I may replace my 19" LCD by a larger one, if somebody can come up with a good recommendation.

The system should be particularly fast at compiling and offline rendering, so the CPU is quite important, but the GPU should be decent anyway. I thought of investing around 500 Euros, but it may be more or less dependent on what it gets me.

So let me know what you'd recommend ;) .

You probably don't need any extra cooling. My brother has a cramped HP Elite tower, but he runs a Core i7 920 and an EVGA GTX 460 Super-Superclocked Plus (or something like that) without any overheating issues.

The i7 has a max. TDP of 95 Watts. Can you recommend one with similar computing power and pricing that has a lower TDP? And would I need a better CPU cooler than the boxed one for the i7?
A max TDP of 95 is fine.
Coolermaster V8 heat sink should be perfect for the build.
Apparently this one is not available for socket 1155. Only for socket 1156. Do you really think that I need to purchase an extra CPU cooler, if I do not intend to overlock? My tower has relatively good cooling.
You should be fine if you don't clock higher.
Unless you live in above 45*C heat... then i would rather just tell you to buy water cooling.

Nah, Germany hardly ever hits 45°C, so I won't buy an extra cooler. Thanks for the help guys. I'm ordering now.

I believe the coolermaster v8 is compatible for alot of sockets, including 1155.

Scroll down for specs, look at the first row. The cooler is kinda overkill if you dont overclock tho, my processor never really gets hot (unless its running at 100% constantly, even then my fans wont go over 30% (which is the main reason it will get a bit hot)) Im not using a stock cooler tho. Just a simple coolermaster fan and block. But it never hurts to have good cooling.

oh, ups... noticed too late.

Hmpf, my processor is at 25 degrees C... Fucking winter :C.

Well, I guess my CPU will be up at 100% on all cores over long times quite often. But the order is out. I'll set the system up with the boxed cooler and have an eye on the temperature. If it should get too high, I will get an additional cooler.

I think its best if you are able to set your FAN speeds in windows, my mobo lets my processor go over 70 degrees Celcius without noticably ramping up fan speeds.... (1400 RPM while they can go 4000)

That does not look so good. On the other hand the i7 920 eats 35 watts more than my i7 2600. If the i7 2600 has the same stock cooler, it might be sufficient.

There is also another option. I still have a good CPU fan for my old CPU. I'm just worried that it might be a bad idea to put it onto another CPU now, because I used cooling paste when I installed it.

always a good idea to replace the thermal paste when installing\reinstalling a cpu cooler

Wow. That's quite a cooling you've got there.

On a second thought I probably can't install my old cooler on the new mainboard anyway, because it was for a Core 2 Duo socket.

Thanks.
I'm pushing 4.67Ghz off of 6 cores.. so yes it gets a bit toasty.
Compiling android distro's has a nasty waiting time.
So have the extra cores helps me relax while i'm waiting.

Jay. All parts arrived and I set the system up over the weekend with both Windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.10. Everything is working fine. The only thing that I did not quite figure out yet, is why the RAM is clocked at 1600Mhz instead of 2133Mhz. CPU cooling turns out to be no issue at all. For a little benchmark I've been running pathtracing with 100% stress on all cores for half an hour. Initially the CPU temperature was at 34°C, now it is at 32°C. The maximum was 39°C. I guess I could abuse my tower for cool drinks :D .

Thanks for all the advice.

Ooh, what did you buy and how much did you spend on those items? My classmate is planning on a hardware upgrade too.

I ordered the parts listed here. The tower, the PSU, optical drives and additional HDDs did not need to be replaced.
