For those of you who do not own a copy of Skyrim, it is the latest installment of Bethesda's 'Elder Scrolls' title. I have been playing it religiously since I got it a few days ago, and I am just so immersed in the story and game play, but I was incredibly impressed with the graphics, such as the incredible draw distance, HDR, shaders, parallax mapping and the character models but even more than that, the shadows. In Skyrim, it seems that everything casts stencil shadows, even trees and things in the outdoor environment, I was wandering how the hell this is achieved, because in U3D and other engines stencil shadows always seem to be pretty pricey on performance, especially in complicated scenes which Skyrim is in no way short of, and the amount of shadows that are cast, and the quality that they are cast at, it is a wonder that the game runs so smoothly.

You must be a on a piss poor resolution, because even at forcing a double upscale of the shadow map, I can still tell it's shadow mapping.

all non-static items have shadows applied to them, as long as they are within the specified draw distance.

i basically got the best smithing skill first, got daedric armor and weapons and enchanted them to heal me, so i can effectively eliminate whole towns now. (sorry, riften!)

Really? Ive taken the mage route, i have destruction maxed out, and i have lots of enchanted items, so i have 320 magika max, and about 350% increased magika regeneration and i get about 120 damage per dual cast of fireball, so its pretty good :)

I'm not particularly impressed by Skyrim's graphics, Gothic 4 on the other hand had some pretty impressive graphics. Overall I've already gotten bored of Skyrim. It's too much mechanics and too little action and old-school RPGing. Gothic 4 is better in all these areas.

Well, I guess thats the aesthetic there going for really, because Skyrim is rather a snowy place. Although during the early evening in the more southern areas such as Riverwood when its not really cloudy it looks very nice :)

Eh, Skyrim is prettier than Fallout 3 or Fallout: New Vegas, but I'm still not particularly impressed by its graphics. The textures seem kind of low-res for today's standards, and the models are a little on the blocky side. There are some nice graphics mods out there, though.

left hand=the graphics of the game
right hand=the amount of work put into the game...that makes me pissed off when people say bethesda could have just spent a little more time on it - YOU TRY MAKING A FUCKING GAME

luckily, i can wank off with both hands

low res? bitchy, bitchy, bitchy

DEAL WITH IT

SRSLY

THIS WAS ABOUT THE SHADOWS

DAMN, THIS SHOULD HAVE ENDED BACK WHEN DESP BROUGHT UP GOTHIC 4. BECAUSE, YOU KNOW, YOU COULD NOT BITCH AT ALL AND JUST PLAY GOTHIC 4.

I like the graphics (except for the Z fighting) but I dislike the game-play, its either way too easy, or incredibly difficult. *enemies that 1 or 2 hit you*
Dragons are very easy to kill, and they are supposed to be some epic sort of monster, heck they are even more easy to kill then 2 guards.
(how to defeat a dragon,
get a sword/longsword of the cold,
find dragon,
run to dragon,
press lmb till its dead.
GG)
I like this chick that is constantly following me around, but I got bored of the game pretty quickly..

Battlefield 3 is a big let down too, graphics are fine, but I get stuck in the ground( and other small objects, even impact craters) more often than a Swedish grave robber.. Vehicles haven't really improved too...
Games I've had most fun with 'till now are the good old ones (Starsiege Tribes for example, its free, the graphics sucks (designed to run on 150mhz thing) but its more fun than watching Swedish grave robbers get stuck in the ground)...

(They should just polish the graphics of an old game if they don't have the budget to fix the game-play).

*End of complaining.*

Yeah, I admit that it was a bit too offtopic, sorry about that. Either way I haven't paid much attention to the shadows in Skyrim because I've felt they look pretty average like i.e the shadows in Deus Ex: HR running on DX10. Still looks impressive though for being dynamic shadow maps.

what bothered me in skyrim is when id be enchanting something at the sleeping giant inn,
and some guy upstairs would play a song called 'ragnar the red'
ragnar rhymes with my name, so i shot an arrow, in which i just enchanted, at his face.
then the gaurds would let it slide because i'm a thane.
