From Aug 2006 - Nov 2013 WeDig provided a live forum for diggers & fans of Vindolanda. It has now been mothballed and will be maintained as a live archive.

Here you will find preserved 7 years of conversation, photos, & knowledge about a site many people love. Vindolanda gets under the skin. (Figuratively and literally as a volunteer excavator!) It's a place you remember, filled with people you remember!

Thanks for 7 great years!

Four Hundred Years at a Glance

Vindolanda over time
PERIOD I
PERIOD II
PERIOD III
PERIOD IV
PERIOD V
PERIOD VI
PERIOD VI-A
PERIOD VI-B
PERIOD VII
PERIOD VIII
PERIOD IX
PERIOD X
Hover your mouse over any of the periods to see the plan of the fort for that period. Or scroll to watch the fort evolve across a span of 400+ years. You quickly see that it began in almost the same position & dimensions that it ended. Early years of expansion (II - III) represented manpower being added to the frontier, culminating finally in the building of Hadrian's Wall (IV - V). After the Wall was built, the fort returned to a smaller size (VI - VI-A), saw a very unorthodox -- and brief! -- period (VI-B), and then settled into its final dimensions (VII - X).

The blank spots on each period mark the unexcavated bits. As you can easily see, the past 40 years of excavation have still barely scratched the surface of everything that there is discover. With luck, the Vindolanda Trust will be supporting volunteer digs for decades to come!
