From Aug 2006 - Nov 2013 WeDig provided a live forum for diggers & fans of Vindolanda. It has now been mothballed and will be maintained as a live archive.

Here you will find preserved 7 years of conversation, photos, & knowledge about a site many people love. Vindolanda gets under the skin. (Figuratively and literally as a volunteer excavator!) It's a place you remember, filled with people you remember!

Thanks for 7 great years!

Spam email
Quick update. WeDig is currently under a fairly intense spammer attack. Happened before, though the last time was more than a year ago. When one spam account is deleted & the IP address banned, another takes its place. Many of the attacks this time around are from US addresses -- mostly California. The spammers are getting more sophisticated. Still, it'll run its course, and we'll find & ban all the offending address ranges. In the meantime, if you see or receive any notice from a WeDig'er you don't know, please report it.

Spam email
Hi all. As some of you saw, a spammer got on overnight and sent out an email to at least some WeDigers. The acct has been closed and the IP address banned. I'm checking into whether the PM/email system can or needs to be strengthened. Site integrity is key here, and admins take spammers seriously. If you receive a note from "isabe" or "isabelle," please delete it.

Northumberland flooding
Seeing pics this morning of big flooding in Morpeth. Looks like wild weather has hit the NE. Hope Tynedale and everybody in it are safe & sound.

September visit
Love these! Amazing to think back to March/April and see all that was done in a few short months. Thank you Pete!

2013 Excavations and the new SMC
Please see Andy's note this morning and stay tuned!

First English Description of Roman Works
The Exeter Book is a collection of Old English poetry, maxims, riddles, and whatnot, miraculously preserved now for over 1000 years. In it is a remarkable poem called The Ruin, probably written first in the 8th Century.

Though this isn't directly related to Vindolanda (it's possibly about Bath), it's a striking piece. An awareness of the enormous works that still stood dotting the English landscape, most crumbling away but still impressive. It is extremely easy to picture an 8th Century wanderer of Hadrian's Wall Country seeing his or her world in similar light.

Here is the first section of the poem. Original Anglo-Saxon first, followed below by modern translation:

WrŠtlic is ■es wealstan, wyrde gebrŠcon;
burgstede burston, brosna enta geweorc.
Hrofas sind gehrorene, hreorge torras,
hrungeat berofen, hrim on lime,
scearde scurbeorge scorene, gedrorene,
Šldo undereotone. Eorgrap hafa
waldend wyrhtan forweorone, geleorene,
heardgripe hrusan, o■ hund cnea
wer■eoda gewitan. Oft ■Šs wag gebad
rŠghar ond readfah rice Šfter o■rum,
ofstonden under stormum; steap geap gedreas.
Wuna giet se...

Wondrous is this masonry; fates broke it.
Courtyard pavements were smashed; the work of giants is decaying.
Roofs are fallen, ruinous towers,
the frosty gate with frost on cement is ravaged,
chipped roofs are torn, fallen,
undermined by old age. The grasp of the earth possesses
the mighty builders, perished and fallen,
the hard grasp of earth, until a hundred generations
of people have departed. Often this wall,
lichen-grey and stained with red, experienced one reign after another,
remained standing under storms; the high wide gate has collapsed.
Still the masonry endures...

The folks who came to Britain after the Romans may not have had the same technical skill. Or the same administrative skill. But anyone reading such beautiful words as that would be hard pressed to call them barbarians!

Ad Removal
Hi all! Popped on today and noticed ads on the site. I've re-upped the ad removal and the ads should be gone again for everyone.

Amazing news actually. The last time I dropped the $9 to kill the ads was just over 3 months ago. WeDig pages have had 50,000 unique hits in just those 3 months!
