From Aug 2006 - Nov 2013 WeDig provided a live forum for diggers & fans of Vindolanda. It has now been mothballed and will be maintained as a live archive.

Here you will find preserved 7 years of conversation, photos, & knowledge about a site many people love. Vindolanda gets under the skin. (Figuratively and literally as a volunteer excavator!) It's a place you remember, filled with people you remember!

Thanks for 7 great years!

Week One
Hi all team week one members.

Thank you all for your incredible efforts this past week in some truely challenging weather conditions. Despite this we achieved a great deal and learned a lot about the site in a short period of time.

1. we only seem to have one granary, the other building is impressive and at present remains a mystery, more to follow......... whats more, the other building has been demolished beofre the granary fell over its demolished remains.

2. the floor in the granary survived in patches and the underfloor is made up of columns in hypercaust style, thus far.

best,

Andy

The 2008 Season
The 2008 report:

An interim report on the work that has taken place in 2007, with a raft of specialist reports is due to be released later this year, possibly as soon as May. It is hoped that we will be able to make this report downloadable from the main Vindolanda website at www.vindolanda.com

The report will include the latest geophysical survey of the site. A full report on the 2007 work will be published in due course as part of the biannual publications of the work undertaken on the site by the Vindolanda Trust.

Andrew

The 2008 Season
New Excavation Shed up date:

The shed goes ahead!

Construction of the new facility will start on the 14th of April this year and it should be open to use by the 28thof April at the latest. This will make things very comfortable for the excavators and provide a proper base of operations for the forseable future.

best,

Andrew

Welcome to wedigvindolanda.com!
Hi Jim,

Welcome to the forum and I hope you enjoy the updates on the wedig site as the excavations progress through the season. I will be asking as many volunteers as I can to post their pics and thoughts on the wedig site this year so there should be plenty to wet your appetite.

2008-2012 seasons
Granary Found..

South Eastern wall of the first of what we hope are two granaries has been found and uncovered at Vindolanda. Trial trenching has taken place over the last couple of days in preperation for the main season kicking off in two weeks time, and during this work the very fine masonry from the south eastern corner, including two buttresses came to light. Initial work suggests that at least some of the flagged floor of the building remains intact. Pictures to follow.
