From Aug 2006 - Nov 2013 WeDig provided a live forum for diggers & fans of Vindolanda. It has now been mothballed and will be maintained as a live archive.

Here you will find preserved 7 years of conversation, photos, & knowledge about a site many people love. Vindolanda gets under the skin. (Figuratively and literally as a volunteer excavator!) It's a place you remember, filled with people you remember!

Thanks for 7 great years!

Week 21
the week 21 gang. Well done folks, extremely hard work this week as the site was once more soaking wet, will this soggy summer never end?

Week 20
The most excellent week 20 crew, we salute you all, and say thank you :-) Even those who didn't look directly at the camera!

Week 20
Hi All,

Just a few corrections before we get too carried away, as the news is obviously out on this forum.

1. It isn't an altar, it is an inscription (dedication) but not an altar as such.

2. It isn't dedicated to Diana, it is dedicated to someone else, an unknown (as far as I can tell at the moment) Tungrian goddess. It may have absolutely nothing to do with the temple nearby, so the location of the temple to Diana is still missing regardless.

3. It is by the 1st Tungrians, not the 2nd Tungrians. You know, the lot who were at Vindolanda in periods I & IV.

4. Yes, it is super great, and we will have more info anon, once, we have something sensible to say about it :-)

As for the coincidence with Maryport, it is lovely. I am absolutely delighted for the good folks at Maryport excavations, they have a lovely altar there, a real cracker. But even better, it is in a context that helps to shed light on the whole complex, which is the real fab news. Also, well done that John Murray.

cheers,

Andy

Crowdsourcing archaeology
A good bit of spin :-) the Flag Fen story, there is nothing new about this one or its model. It is a difficult time for all arts and humanities funding, and archaeology is suffering as part of that. But, over the past 200 years or more, private citizens have made some amazing contributions to archaeological work all over the world. Lets hope that they continue to do so...........

Week 19
the week 19 gang in glorious sunshine, hurrah.

Week 18
Week 18 - pre lightening strike on Vindolanda telecommunications systems.
