From Aug 2006 - Nov 2013 WeDig provided a live forum for diggers & fans of Vindolanda. It has now been mothballed and will be maintained as a live archive.

Here you will find preserved 7 years of conversation, photos, & knowledge about a site many people love. Vindolanda gets under the skin. (Figuratively and literally as a volunteer excavator!) It's a place you remember, filled with people you remember!

Thanks for 7 great years!

Clean Tools
A few thoughts about tools.

They obviously take a hammering throughout the course of the season and a general deterioration is bound to take place. The Trust spends a small fortune each year buying and replacing worn out equipment and believe me the gear you're provided with at Vindo is in a heck of a lot better state than a good few digs I've been on and seen.

However I was thinking about this over lunch today and worked some figures out. If we bought a new barrow, spade, shovel, mattock trowel, kneeling mat, hand shovel, bucket and had brush for each of the 25volunteers and divided the cost of the 25 sets of gear by the number of volunteers who join us over the whole season it would equate to approx 10 per person more than you pay now to cover the cost each season.

If there is a general feeling that the tools are in a state, how would this extra cost to your dig fees sit with you all to have new gear each season?
