From Aug 2006 - Nov 2013 WeDig provided a live forum for diggers & fans of Vindolanda. It has now been mothballed and will be maintained as a live archive.

Here you will find preserved 7 years of conversation, photos, & knowledge about a site many people love. Vindolanda gets under the skin. (Figuratively and literally as a volunteer excavator!) It's a place you remember, filled with people you remember!

Thanks for 7 great years!

Midges! How bad are they really?
If you want to go down the more natural route try Tea Tree Oil behind your ears and on your wrists and ankles.

Just in case they manage to get through make sure you've got some after-bite to soothe the irritation!

There is a nice walk to Bardon Mill if you fancy a different treck in the morning, or you could always tackle the hill for a change!

When I stayed in the Hedley Centre last May/June there were only 4 of us there so I had a room to myself. If you're there with your brother and his wife there is a triple bedded room if you don't mind sharing - I'm sure Colin could sort that for you. It is a lovely place to stay.

Thanks for your informative and well considered post, Andy. I took part in a local (to me) dig last year where the set-up was totally different fom Vindolanda, as well as covering a different historical period (medieval with possible mesolithic and neolithic) and it was fascinating to see how the rest of the digging world operates. I also had the opportunity to learn other skills such as surveying, cross-section drawing, plan drawing which I feound useful when retirning to Vindolanda this year.

I think it is hard to please veryone all of the time - boundaries have to be drawn somewhere. So I think the idea of setting limits on ratios of experienved diggers and 'Vindolanda Virgins' may well have some potential. If it means I can't get a place in the future, yes I'll be disappointed but I can follow the dig online and visit the site. I would also be able to attend any courses at the Hedley Centre.

So thanks again Andy and the rest of the team - you're doing a fantastic job and I wouldn't want to do it!

Never thought I'd be so pleased that Joanna is still job-hunting and was at home to make the bookings while I was at work!

Apparently the form wanted our friends membership number, but ours is valid till 1st Feb 2012 and doen't have a number on it. Joanna has emailed Colin and Fiona for help.

Anyway, roll on 2nd - 13th April!! Can't wait!! :)
