From Aug 2006 - Nov 2013 WeDig provided a live forum for diggers & fans of Vindolanda. It has now been mothballed and will be maintained as a live archive.

Here you will find preserved 7 years of conversation, photos, & knowledge about a site many people love. Vindolanda gets under the skin. (Figuratively and literally as a volunteer excavator!) It's a place you remember, filled with people you remember!

Thanks for 7 great years!

Session 2
Briefly, very briefly as we are about to head off into the rain to find out what is in store for us today, yesterday morning was washed out and replaced by a couple of presentations by Andrew followed by a full afternoon of getting dirty deturfing, exposing walls, removing ramparts and finding the odd thing or two. Oh, and excavating an old excavation trench. End of day photos later.

Session 2
Yesterday's photos

Session 2
I am not sure if I have the strength to report anything so it is just as well that there is little to report! De-turfing heading south (and east on the rampart so that there is now only a narrow barrow-run left twixt trench and wall). But first we all swapped trenches which did not please some people as they had spent last week getting down to archaeology and were moved to de-turf today. However, it will be down again tomorrow, hopefully and weather permitting. Today was so windy that a slight sprinkle of raindrops forced an early tea but no time lost otherwise.

Finds seem to have been minimal - the "staff of recognition" (the laser ranging pole) was seen mostly lying forlornly in the grass. Yours truly, however, did come up with an intact glass bottle complete with inscription: "Bell & Sons Ltd Liverpool"! A google gave many references to builders in that city but the one I prefer is to a "veterinary chemist" and they were in business in 1938 according to an invoice that was up for auction on e-bay.

I have the trench photos but not the strength to downsize them and post them - maybe tomorrow after breakfast. (Keep you on tenterhooks,eh!)

Edit: Just seen Justin's twitter photo showing, to the right, a newly de-turfed wall. I told Kate last week that she was standing on it!

Session 2
Amongst today's extra-mural activities pot-washing was performed in shifts. The usual chucking of stones and finding of small finds was achieved. Amongst the latter was a gaming counter and a bit of beaded glass. For those that did the late shift they missed digging in horizontal rain. Shelter was taken outside the East Gate and a brief return was made but the trenches were becoming muddy and slippery.

Amongst finds were another arrow-head and also a perfume jar (piece of) which yours truly got chastised for because he did not recognise it as being a small find - apparently it is rare.

Photos were taken at close of play 'cos Fiona had forgotten her camera. They run from West to East with plenty of overlap (I hope). They have been reduced to 20% of actual to make them visible sans scrolling. Full size they are about 2.5-4+m so I hope no one wants a full blown copy mailed!

Session 2
Promised lashings of rain failed to materialise but the wind returned late in the afternoon so the sport of chasing belongings was restarted! Mainly "going down" all over but some more deturfing carried out towards, but not at, the western end of the trench. Nothing spectacular found - arrow heads, a spear head, pot lids, the normal detritus of empire. I guess Fiona may be posting photos which is just as well as I have not taken any.

The rain has turned up late in the day but hopefully it will disappear before start of business tomorrow.

Session 2
All the wind in the world was concentrated on Vindolanda. Westerly with gusts up to 66 mph (100+kph) but bright sunshine after the first 5 minutes. It even felt slightly warm by the ed of the day.

Todays activities included finishing off the deturfing we started last night and then started cleaning off. At least that is what was happenning at the west end of the trench. Numerous finds including an altar with inscription so the champers is out, amph with grafitti, whetstone, arrow-head, dog footprint (on a tile).

As others have posted pix I shall refrain. But can I ask that peeps reduce the size so that I do not have to scroll left and right - and I do not have the slimmest screen around.

Other important news: the chaffinch has not appeared yet and the ice cream kiosk is not yet active :(

Session 2
Oooh! ouch! ouch! oooh!, ow! ow! You guessed it - first day and no exercise since last day of my 2 weeks in July last year. Not much happened - cleaned up a little bit here and there deturfed some more. Same in all areas - clean up and go down an inch or 2 and deturf. Weather bright with a shower or two scudding through on a strong (very strong) westerly wind. No photies as I didn't think we had changed the landscape sufficiently. Maybe tomorrow (but tomorrow never comes!!)
