From Aug 2006 - Nov 2013 WeDig provided a live forum for diggers & fans of Vindolanda. It has now been mothballed and will be maintained as a live archive.

Here you will find preserved 7 years of conversation, photos, & knowledge about a site many people love. Vindolanda gets under the skin. (Figuratively and literally as a volunteer excavator!) It's a place you remember, filled with people you remember!

Thanks for 7 great years!

Midges! How bad are they really?
Quite often you see a cloud of midges hovering over bushes etc. I don't think they're as small as blackflies found in NZ.

A useful website is

and go into 'Outdoor Skills' - but there are numerous websites with advice on how to beat the pests.

Jungle Formula is good and can be bought at most pharmacies in the UK

We reckon that Northumbrian midges are Scottish ones... on holiday! Don't ever stop to take photos on Skye (off NW coast of Scotland) - we got eaten alive and they came with us in the car and into our hotel room! Midsummer up there is a very itchy time.

The ones round Vindolanda are nearly as keen and nasty.

So come well prepared with various products.

2012?
And if you are all short of something interesting to read, there is always Kate's study of 'Mortaria Stamps' and, lately, 'The Stone Sources Project - 2009 - 2011' by Mike McGuire. Its a bit long....47 pages! But lots of illustrations and references etc.

You can find it on the Vindolanda website under 'Excavations' and then 'Excavation Reports'.

Testing on this subject may take place in May 2012.... but then,.... perhaps not. ;)

Er Harry.....

Who pays for the people to show you how to do blacksmithing/stone working etc? It wouldn't be cheap and perhaps the Trust would rather spend the money elsewhere which would prove to be more useful.

You can always do pot washing - you weren't bad at it :D
