From Aug 2006 - Nov 2013 WeDig provided a live forum for diggers & fans of Vindolanda. It has now been mothballed and will be maintained as a live archive.

Here you will find preserved 7 years of conversation, photos, & knowledge about a site many people love. Vindolanda gets under the skin. (Figuratively and literally as a volunteer excavator!) It's a place you remember, filled with people you remember!

Thanks for 7 great years!

Well, not to get too scholarly on this topic, but Justin's talk to the school kids always mentions that one of the Vindolanda tablets specifically named underpants. So they did exist.

I am not at all sure that, even in the worthy name of science, I would care to recover a discarded pair from the foul smelling anaerobic depths!

Roman Child a Murder victim at Vindolanda
The Vindolanda Murder got a brief mention and photo in the Dec. edition of Archeology. They have been interested in Vindolanda in the past too, the bronze calender device got a full page a year or so back.

Local Weather?
Here in the Colonies we read alarmist reports of once-in-a-century snow and cold in Britain. The Army has been called out to aid in snow removal. (Although the photos I saw all showed the troops smiling, mostly not wearing gloves or even in some instances jackets!).

So, locals, what's it like on the ground?

Ah, so we will be wearing some form of Livery then?

Temenos/pomerium
I suppose this tradition is continued to the current era, in that the British monarch cannot enter the City of London without the specific permission of the Lord Mayor.
